I mostly use Game Colour. I'm really bad at mixing paints. Just wondering
if there's a certain way terra cotta looks (other than the color). Also, how would
you paint cracks on a model that doesn't actually have them?

Question: is this for Skorne or are you going to start fielding Chinese terracotta warrior zombies?

I'd do a series of dry-brushes to get the color hues, and do some stippling to form the cracks, maybe?

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

Yeah, I have some Skorne stuff from before. They look orange right
now and it's...a little too bright.

So I was thinking terra cotta everything might be fun.

you mean terra cotta like the flower pots or terra cotta like those old soldier statues in China?

If you mean like the flower pots maybe you could start with something like bestial brown with a drop of blood red as the base and then add a little bit of bleached bone in to make the highlights? And if you wanna do some inking maybe chestnut ink would be the way to go since it's got a little red in it?

If they look orange now, I give the skin a flesh wash (sorta brown/red) and then highlight, as for the armour, is that remnants of paint on them?

Maybe to a lacquer armour - like Cudz's DOW army, and then hit it hard with the dullcoat, so it looks faded & junk.

Flesh wash will have too much orange tone in it, I think its only gonna bring out more of the orange, use a brown ink and add a bit of glaze medium, or use smoke with about 50% glaze medium. That will make the look a bit more flat and earthen. Then you will have to age the look to what ever your liking is. If you want your guys too look like the pic there alot of stuff you can do.

When you seal them use a gloss coat first, Wal Mart (in the US) carries an great one called color place get the clear one, its a gloss coat. Then hit it with GWs Matt sealer and the will be well protected and look dead flat. The trick is, esp if you dry brush, the gloss coat will protect them from gaming as well as hide alot of your painting flaws buy blending the rough edges out and smoothing out the over all look. Its crazy how it works bnut it works. And the Matt coat knocks the shine right off and gives a very flat look to the fig. A friend of mine showed me this about 3 years ago and I have been doing it that way from then, it works great.

Definately drybrush them. Probably a base of tanned flesh then add bleached bone for successive layers.

Floquil used to make a primer that was red brick color. If its still available, it would be perfect with a lighten wash for highlights.
