Not that bad as removing entire mountains... I have converted a entire hillside and landscape into a castle complex housing 5 gate houses, stables, gardens, port with 10+ houses and builds, and a 120 by 40 block hall with vast stained glass windows and glass roof sections.

On top of a fuly night proofed internal roadway network for easy travel between my base and island villa etc.

Another server.. My mega build is more many slammer ones combined.

Have to join as said when less busy

I don't even KNOW anymore.

On a minor note, I donated a red parrot to the birdhouse at spawn. I'll try to add other colors as I get them (green birds have been elusive).

There's a few places that you should visit if you enjoy those sorts of large-scale builds.

Chasmholm, like Ian said, though you'll probably want him around to give you the tour- it's a confusing place to navigate, otherwise.

The Increasingly Inaccurately Named Grey Mesa, for another (that's my place)- it's simpler to navigate, but can still be confusing and dangerous without someone who knows their way around.

The whole Nether system is pretty impressive, Sir Ralphy's tower is a marvel of automation (and lag), and there's a bunch of other abandoned megabuilds scattered around.

The titan is also really impressive. Then the mansion just south of your place.

The lag at my place may be better, I've done a lot of work there lately, or it made the lag worse It runs fine for me if you visit just watch out for my new friends, some of them are kind of grumpy

I'll see your mountain and raise you landscaping under an ocean. I cleared out a 240 block diameter under my tower to build a dome, I took the ocean down to level 20, and once I get back to it I need to cover most of it back up again to blend it back into the original ocean around the dome

So I met my first player today!
On a side note, the Koutetsujougyro line is coming along well, with the first river nearly bridged. After the line is in place there is a plan to put a road in as well.

Oh, and look out for the new store at the spawn village - Ulmanian Terracotta.

Well, the first line of the Koutetsujougyro has now almost reached the spawn - only the mountainous ravines to cross now. The first train is ready to run, once the test cars have been through. Screenshot will be incoming.

Finally, the dakka map has been fully explored. Aside from a line near a witch farm and a tiny patch near the battleships which should load into the map tomorrow, every chunk has been activated, unless I've missed a spot.

Well, the great Northern Koutetsujougyro line is now linked to the spawn. At SirRalphy's suggestion I have terminated the first length of the line at the Subway Metro entrance, although it does look a bit odd. The line does run through - or rather above - the Market, and I realise that some people may not like the look of it, so I am going to say this:
If you do not like the look of the line, or you would rather that it went a different way then feel free to change how it runs through the spawn village. All that I ask is that you keep it in line with the original look, and that you ensure that it still links up. I have placed a couple of places where an offshoot/new line could be added and linked on to the original. Feel free to add your own lines and link them in - one day I hope to have a map-wide network, allowing for the easy transporting of goods between points. The line is currently unpowered and runs on steam - IE, furnace carts. If you want to power it then by all means feel free.

Apart from that, enjoy!

YES! Finally, someone else that sees the great purpose of Furnace carts!

The Great Eastern Tunnel is a Furnace-cart rail as well. It's just so long that putting in powered rails would be prohibitively costly, and powered rails screw up long chains of carts anyways.

costly? just use the gold farm and it rains gold

just find out who runs the witch farms and there's your free sticks & redstone

well if you want to make them the vanilla way anyways. It's not like they're the easiest thing to duplicate in the game But you shouldn't dupe them, that's an exploit and those are wrong to use

I'm still debating how I want to run the biome track, I'd prefer to do something similar to what I made on the direwolf server, but then I consider just being lazy and continuing the flying track that already covers most of the icy biomes. But rest assured it will be 16 normal tracks, then 1 to 3 powered tracks to keep you flying around the track

@master of ordinace
I was suggesting to bring the track in underground instead of over the spawn buildings to connect to the subway.

*ahem*
Mondo80 has upgraded a good length to powered rail, and after the disastrous launch of the first steam train (it derailed its own cargo car) I may have to ascend..... At least until furnace carts get an upgrade. Fear not though - the Heights train will still run on steam.

It hit a corner and the chest cart rubber banded a bit before the physics engine relocated it.

I built a small run of tracks between the white house & the monument so people can see what I'm planning. It will go near peoples builds so here's your chance to approve or suggest changes. If you want something totally different just build a small run next to mine. Keeping in mind the track would span thousands of blocks through all the biomes, so the materials need to be common or farmable. Minecraft really needed to make all the new concrete blocks with wall & slab options.

Of course we'll need a proper train station at spawn and a display train to highlight what the track is for. yes I'm thinking the polar express again Either in back of the white house or between the monument & the iron farm are the two locations that would work nicely for them.

that's just a visual glitch, if you watch someone leave a station then take a corner, they'll reappear where they launched from, but they're still in the cart moving away.

Nope, it actually derailed. I had to run half way back from the spawn village to find it, and it took me a second pass to notice it by the tracks.

Anyway, Ulm is looking better now, and the first phase (yes, built in Cobblestone - pleasedontkillme) is nearly complete. The Terracotta road, and the Road to the Heights are under way as is the Steam Train to the heights. Ulm station is coming along well too.

The second phase of expansion will be a far more modern outlook, and will include the use of Stone Masonry as opposed to Cobblestone.

Also please be aware - there are some missing rails just before you pass under the bridge to the keep - a creeper detonated quite spectacularly and took them with it.

Why'd you have 2 engines?

I will say, furnace carts lose a LOT of 'steam' going around corners or up hills. But on a straightaway- one engine can push a good... 10? or more Chest carts for around 1500 blocks on a single piece of charcoal.

One at the front and one at the back, so when you get to your destination you do not need to take your train apart and reassemble it to point the other way, you just need to "push" it with a piece of charcoal.

Hrm. That works okay in the real world, but Furnace Carts have a TON of mass in cart systems. I'm not surprised you got a strange squish going there. I'd suggest just moving the furnace next time- it's simple enough to do.

Could that be done with a turning loop at track end to bring the train round, and back rejoin forward again with a stop rail set up?

yep, those are easy to make, you basically make a 'P' come up the leg of the P hang a right in the middle and loop back onto the main track. no levers or funny redstone needed.

Basically, a lot of real-world track management can work, you just gotta tweak it to deal with a pusher instead of a puller.

The big issue I have (that keeps me from going track-mad) is that Furnace carts can't be fueled by hoppers, and that they don't have a specific side that they push on. Like, if they always pushed in a single direction, that you could control via right-clicking them, and took fuel from hoppers above them... You could make all sorts of handy train systems.

In all honest Furnace carts have been in dire need of a proper update and function for years now. Something that lets them function like an actual pusher/puller steam engine and lets them go around corners without throwing everything everywhere.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I should also probably mention this now, but Ulm considers the Roofed forest biome, as far east as the sea/swamp, and south as the river to be Ulmanian territory, including the cliffside bay and associated islands, and the Birch forest up to just beyond the pool of lava to be Ulmanian territory, as are the Heights.

Does anyone wish to dispute the territorial claims?
