After Dan Abnett's Legion comes out next april (salavates with excitement) it looks like we're going to get Horus Heresy: Battle for the Abyss by Ben Counter in July.

The amazon.com description reads: "Horus sends the Worldbearer space marines to the planet Calth, where they are to ambush the loyalist Ultramarines. In addition to the main fleet, Horus sends a new doomsday battleship for use against the Ultramarines home world of Ultramar. A small strike force travels space and the warp to delay or destroy the doomsday ship to save the Ultramarines."

I'm sure they meant Word Bearer. I'm really excited. I thought Ben Counter's Galaxy in Flames was pretty darn good. The story was compelling, all the characters that Ben spent time developing were important to the story, and the battle scenes were intense. It was well written and downright suspenseful. I'm sure he'll do a great job with Battle for the Abyss and thankfully it's one more book in the HH series that Grahm McNeil won't get his hands on.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew anything more about this part of the Heresy. I had never heard of Horus sending a doomsday ship to destroy the Ultramarines. I knew that a portion of Word Bearers had fought with the Ultramarines during the heresy, but I always thought that the Ultramarines were just caught up in a campaign on the eastern rim and that was the reason they were unable to assist Terra.

Has anyone ever read any fluff about the Word Bearers or Ultramarines that sheds light on this part of the story.

I'm pretty sure you're right and that this (The Doomsday Ship to Ultramar) is a portion of "new fluff" being placed into the larger framework of the Heresy.

I can't say I'm a big fan of most of the "new fluff", and by that I mean especially Mr. Merritt's contributions via the card game, but I can say that the story of the Heresy had to get expanded beyond the two or so pages that most of us are familiar with (by Bill King, I think?)...

So far, most of the Heresy series books has been really good, though I'm only about a 1/3 of the way through "Descent..." so I'm not fully up to speed yet!
