I just recently dusted off my tomb kings and I'm gonna be playing with them. So far, I've only played a handful of under 1000 pt games with my empire since the new version.. I have well over 3000 pts worth of TKs. I lost all my old army lists in a hard drive crash, so now with the new version of army builder I'm ready to start again.

Anyway, with the new version I'm just wondering if there's anything else I need to keep in mind when building besides the 5-model-wide thing for rank bonuses? The TK magic is pretty much untouched with the newer magic rules, correct? The way I like to play is with magic spam where I take as many spells as possible so I usually have a high priest general, a prince and the rest of the characters are priests. I used to have a cloak of dunes on my high priest but is that a bad idea now that they're easy to target even if they're standing right next to a big unit? Like should every character have a unit now?

In my collection I have something like:

20 skeleton archers
20ish skeletons with hand weapons/shields
25 tomb guard (usually mix em in as skeletons though)
3 ushabti
2 scorps
2 catapults
1 casket
4 swarms
4 normal chariots
1 chariot prince/king
8 horsemen with spears/shields
Settra (modeled on foot but I also have his charriot)
Queen Khalida
4 priests (1 on a horse)
2 other prince/kings on foot

never got around to getting any carrion and won't be getting any anytime soon as I have other projects to work on at the moment.

So, any ideas on how I can take what I have and make a decent 2000ish army out of in the new version of the game? my group is pretty laid back so any missing models can easily be proxied or we usually make units bigger with empty bases in the back rows, etc...

Yup, "the magic spam" is way to the victory with tomb kings, so you should generally take maximum characters. King and 3 priests seems like the most solid overall build. 7th ed. hasn't really changed things much with the kings, as stuff which was good is still good and vice versa. Probably the most notisable thing for everybody is that ranks are universally 5 wide now to get the bonus. I'll give you a quick sample list regarding a bit what figs you have:

Chars:
King /w Light Armor,Flail of Skulls,Golden Ankhra
Priest /w cloak,jar (hierophant)
Priest /w 2xscroll
Priest /w staff of ravening & skeletal steed (one change in the new ed. is, that mounted guys get l-o-s in foot units)

Troops:
4 Chariots /w Standard of the Undying Legion
25 LA & S Skeles, FC
20 Tomb Guard,FC, Icon of Rakaph (surprise )
11 Skele Archers
2 Scorpions
2 Catapults /w Skulls of the Foe
=1999

There ya go. A Solid Defensive magic/shooting list. A bit light on the model count, but that's often the case with desert undead. If you want some more combat power, you could trim 1 catapult & some other stuff to get the Ushbati for example.

Looks pretty good. What I would usually do is take as many spells as I could, and then set myself up where I only need 1 or 2 things to happen, usually a good magic phase charge or 2. And then I'd keep recasting the same spell on the same thing until eventually the guy can't dispell it anymore. So first I'd have the undying legion banner, staff of ravening, then all the characters would go, then I'd have a casket at the end which is something else they'd always have to save dispell power for. The casket rarely gets to go off, but it's such a great deterrent for magic defense for the other stuff. But I think I decided a while back to save that for 3000 pts since it's so pricey.

I used to play defensively and force the guy to come to me, and back my stuff up into a corner (not like i"m gonna run off the table edge) so that when he gets close enough it's easier to send things out and wrap around with multiple units for all kinds of combat resolution bonuses. I'd rarely kill much, I won combats all the time though I would set up my skeletons in 4x6 blocks for extra defense, but I can't do that now :( I guess I could make some 6x4 units now but that might be too wide for my tastes.

Both lists look fine to me, altough I've generally been less than impressed with the casket mainly because it gets destoyed easily & costs a lot. It's a fun thing to use now and then especially in bigger games, though.
