One speculations is that the new 'not so detailed' chaos codex was left 'not so detailed' so that GW can in the future put out codexes for the various legions, the Red one, the Blue one, the Green one, the Pink one and so on.

So what might they look like?

My outline for Codex Death Guard is something like this:

HQ
Great Unclean One
Nurgle Chaos Lord
Nurgle sorcerer

(with lots of weapon options and more powers than currently available)

Troops
Plague Marines (more or less as they are now but no rhinos allowed)
Plague Bearers (demon rules, T5, champ with plague sword)
Plague Zombies (as from LatD)
Nurglings (do not occupy a troop slot, cannot claim objectives)

Elite
Chosen plague marines (can all be upgraded to champs)
Terminators
Wraith/Angel of death kind of guy (3+ invulnerable, flies, deamon weapon)

Fast
Plague Marines with rhino
Immolator type thing (heavy flamer that spews toxic waste)
Beasts of nurgle

Heavy
Pred
Defiler
Land raider

Think it could work as a codex?

I believe some GW mouthpiece or other actually stated as much when the latest CSM book came out, saying that they didn't include Legions so that they could dop "proper" Legion Codices at a later date. Naturally, this creates a lot of suspicion as to GW's actual motives, but I believe it to be genuine:
- GW can sell 5 (6 with Daemons) Codices instead of just one
- GW can include all of Fluff, rather than having to condense it down to a single page or two.
- GW can do a much better job of balancing the Legion lists.

I suspect we'd see the 40k Chaos lineup as follows:
- Chaos Space Marines,
- Chaos Daemons,
- World Eaters,
- Emperor's Children
- Death Guard,
- Thousand Sons
roughly in the above order. I don't think GW would do the unmarked Legions as full Codices, but I could see each unmarked Legion gaining a single special rule or unit (e.g. Cultists) added to the basic book.

In terms of rules complexity / unit count, a dedicated book would be basically similar to the current book. I don't think you'd have too much more in the way of HQ weapon / power options, probably only Plague Sword, Plague Knife (replaces CCW), Blight Grenades, MoN Daemon Weapon, and MoN Vehicle upgrade. The main difference is you gain the full power Daemon entries over the generics.

I think your basic list for Death Guard is about right.

Missing:
- MoN Daemon Prince(HQ)
- MoN Daemonic Herald (HQ)
- MoN Possessed (Elite)
- MoN Chaos Spawn (Fast)
- MoN Vindicator (Heavy)
- MoN Daemon Engine (Heavy)
I'd rather see the above than your "Wraith/Angel" (seems odd). I'm OK with the Plague Immolator, but think that might be more of a MoN Predator / Vindicator.

It is possible you could also get:
- 0-1 MoN Raptors (Fast)
- 0-1 MoN Havocs (Heavy)

Overall, I think this will be better than giving generic CSM access to MoK Bloodthirsters.

I would expect them to mostly look like blank paper since I doubt they will ever do them.

Exalt!

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

I like where you are going Kyoto. Then, I usually do.
I think that for the legions though, they would have less stock CSM stuff (predators are SO last millenium) and would just have an upgrade appropriate and possibly a listing for Predator + Spooge Cannon. The saved space would be used for things you couldn't get with vanilla CSM (who presumably will be ally fodder anyway). So instead of SpoogeRaider you might have "plague engine", some tank like daemon thing unique to the list.

Now, at least that is what they should do. I would expect that they will keep vanilla with mark mixed in in the list, but probably will have 1-3 unique units in the army per FO slot. Similar to what you have, but a little more "oooh" factor to make you want to buy it, instead of just marking things.

They've been pretty clear in saying there are no concrete plans to do them, it's just that the design room is there if they chose to do them in the future. And when you look at their rumored docket, when are they going to happen?

Orks
Daemons
Space Wolves
Space Marines
Dark Eldar
IG
Inquisition
Necrons

5th edition
Planetstrike supplement
Kill Team supplement

That stuff will easily take us through 2010. It's nice to dream, but by 2011 GW could be a Hasbro company, 40K could be a Clix game, and I could be dead.
