So how was your gaming year?

I got a decent amount of figs painted (153 models as of today). More to the point, it was a DIVERSE amount of figs, for everything from Warlord to Chainmail to Warmachine/Hordes, Historicals, and even just random figs for my own pleasure.

Did a pile of gaming earlier in the year, mostly Warmachine and Hordes, and D&D. The baby's first five months gave me a little 'sabbatical' from it all (not entirely his fault: the first 4 months of the Jewish calendar are always the heaviest programming wise), but I'm hoping to get back into the swing of things in '08.

My 2008 Gaming Resolutions
  • Balance my gaming life more with my real life. It always seems to be feast or famine, and when it's feast, it means I don't spend enough time with Marisa (and now Elishai). A lot of my not gaming has been about me making sure things were cool with the wife & child. I'm hoping to strike a better balance this year, where if I go game for a few hours on a regular basis (2-4 times a month, including miniatures gaming and rpgs), it's not taking time away from the two of them. But we'll see; I've sucked at this so far, I'm not sure why I'd be any better at this point in my life...

  • figure out my relationship with GW games: essentially, how much am I downsizing (actually, not just my GW stuff, but anything I'm not playing actively, or even occasionally. I need to be more ruthless in my getting rid of stuff)

  • play more diverse stuff: I'm considering getting into Weird War II, more solidly into VSF, pulp gaming, etc. This on top of Warmachine/Hordes, AT-43, Warlord, etc.

  • Go to Gencon, or Historicon, or some 'con.

  • I painted ~150 figs this year. If I paint 150-175 figs next year, I'll clear through almost all my backlog (and that includes buying more stuff I haven't even dreamed up yet)

  • Killteam and COD Combat Patrol. And Path to Glory. Before they're gone.

  • Get better organized before the child is mobile.

  • Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

2007 was kind of a slow year for me, not much to mention. But what was nice was that the slower pace was very comfortable and relatively stress-free. In 2006, I did the hard work of selling & trading minis to get my inventory down to a relatively limited number of projects. I'm rather proud of this, as it is what made 2007 so easy on me.

Army-wise, I did a lot of re-work and reorganization of armies towards long-term gaming, rather than short term version-specific builds. Basically, I started to streamline and diversify my armies in a similar fashion to how GW has been streamlining and diversifying their army lists. I figure if I bite bullet now, I won't have to worry about it later.

For example, my "fallen" CSM were on hiatus as I didn't like how the 3.5 book shoehorned me into some lame Legion. With the flexibility of the new Codex, I've been really excited about reworking my CSM into "hyper-Puritans" for 2008.

My SM were built on min-max 6s. I reworked them in anticipation of Combat Squads and disposable Rhinos.

Finally, my IG were stand-and-shoot Infantry with a start on an Armoured Company. I've since merged and swapped things into a collection that supports a mixed Mechanized / Armored / Infantry.

Model-wise, lately, I've been focused on Transports for my IG and Stormtroopers. I've got 3 Chimeras almost done, and hope to have a couple Rhino-types for the Stormtroopers in early 2008.

And like you, I've now got a little one, so my gaming is being reduced. I'm OK with all of this.

Wasn't bad. I got a bunch painted from September on, though the early part of the year was a write-off due to MMO's - not touching those again.

Next year I plan to join the local league at the FLGS on Wednesdays and get more Fantasy going.

In August I'll be moving to Toronto on a permanent basis, so I'll be finding gamers there for 40K, WFB and hopefully Infinity and Necromunda too.

2007 has been great for my gaming hobby.
I attended Adepticon and the Vegas Gt and LA Gamesday and did really well in the GT's. I played in over 120 league or tourney games over the year and did pretty well in most of them. I met alot of great people and had some amazing games.
I built 2 40K armies and added to my 3 others. I sold my Dark Eldar and started a Skaven army.
All in all, a great year.

I hope to attend more of the GT events next year, Adepticon of course. I want to play in less RTT's and leagues and focus more on friendly/practice gaming. I will also spend more time and effort on the painting/converting side of the hobby. Hopefully, I will not buy another army in 2008 unless I sell one of my own first. Anyone want to buy a Grey Knight army?
Here is to 2008 being better than 2007.

    Cheers,

    Darrian

2007 was an odd mix. I've stuck to an old resolution of
not playing any 40k whatever. I managed to stay on two
league winning teams for Warmachine, the first time with
Protectorate and the second time with Cryx. I also managed
to play in a WHFB league.

2008 I look forward to trying out Infinity and maybe
Confrontation. If I can get something painted over break
then I think I'll be going to Adepticon, but Gencon for
sure (the truckstop for closet gaymers). I have to figure
out what alt-armies I want to keep and which ones to let
go of. I also want to try to get my brothers more involved
    in gaming...

2007 was an overall boring year gaming wise for me. I think in all, I played 6 games of 40k. In 2008, I plan to play far more often, and actually have a group of people who are interesting in learning when i get back to school.

In terms of painting, my skills have increased 1000%. I've been able to actually finish models and have been able to incorporate more advanced techniques into my painting. I have gone back and stripped old tau and marine armies to prepare them to be better painted. I hope my painting skills continue to increase and I hope to learn to use green stuff to further improve my hobby skills.

I am looking forward to a great year of gaming in 2008.

I didn't game in 2007. I barely painted. Nor did I post here. My LGS put it's minis on clearance at 50% off, so I bought an Eldar army, and now I'm back.

2008 I'm planning on just taking it slow, using a little spare time to put some models together or paint here and there. Maybe play some games, get back to where I was a couple years ago with the game.

Oh, and I will actually finish a damn army this year.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

This year was all about filling in gaps for me - finding points where my armies were missing things (Guard - full Tallarn and Mordian platoons, Chaos - tanks, Marines - tanks and updated non-2nd Ed style squads).

    I completed my Guard Army.

I know that sounds weird, but I don't want any more infantry. I don't want any more tanks ('cept for when FW releases the Shadowsword conv kit for the plastic baneblade). Everything is organised and done.

This year I want from having no Super-Heavies to 6 Super-Heavies (Macharius, 3 Baneblades, Hellhammer + a Stormblade). Our group expanded. We started buying the stupid things only crazy gamers with too much disposable income get (aircraft and Titans). This year we also said goodbye to GWOZ as a place to buy minatures. Unless it's something we need there and then, or bitz, we only buy from online discounters. Oddly enough, as I have said in a few other threads, thanks to the outrageous prices we pay here in Oz and the dwindling US dollar, the GWUS Online store was actually one of the best online discounters we could find. Ironic really that GW was giving us the best deal so we didn't have to pay GW's prices.

I decided to actually do something with my Marine army, and fix it up to remove some of the aging models. Nothing's made me happier than retiring the old lead Assault Marines I had from the early 90's and replacing them with shiny new plastics. I now have more than just they ancient RT era Land Raider as a Marine vehicle (I now have 4 of the new ones thanks to that Spearhead Formation, and two of them will be Chaosified in the new year). I can now stop using my Marine vehicles as Chaos vehicles whenever my Chaos army needs a Predator. My friends are quite happy about this.

I achieved my dream of having an All-Stormy Trooper Inquisition army. Sure they're not very good and every time I've used them I've lost virtually every Storm Trooper, but I love Storm Troopers, and just having 6 sqauds riding up the table in Chimeras has been great fun, if rather comical.

But aside from finishing my Guard, I did something else. I started a new army! And I didn't start it because of fluff, or power, or because of some shiny new model. I started it because I wanted to learn how to paint.

Sure, it's a Necron army, the most basic of the basic, but if it forces me to paint something, then good!

So far I've painted 4 warriors. That sounds pathetic, but given it's an 8000 point army (bought all from eBay - like I'm going to pay full price!), and I haven't built it yet. But that's a job for next year.

We continued our work on the Revisited Project, and by the end of Jan next year will have the next versions of Codex: Eldar, Marines, Chaos, Guard, Daemonhuners and hopefully Tau out of the way - all ready for the Green Tide to take over our rules writing efforts. The rules have also matured as well, with refined building rules, and incorporating some of the concepts from Apoc (specifically superheavies and flyers). Our rules certainly $#!t all over GW's, so we're happy to keep working at it.

The best news is that I'm interested in gaming again. As much of a cock-up GW has made with Apocalypse, releasing a product and then forgetting about it for a month, then releasing and then taking away datasheets, the massive scale has got me back into the thing which drew me into the game in the first place - the background. I've written reams and reams of backround material and fluff just for a single game, spend time naming and inventing back stories for characters that died in the first turn. It's fun, and it's what 40K is to me.

There were some lows to the year:

I didn't play as much Necromunda as I would have liked. I love that game. So does the group (I got 'em all hooked!). Hopefully we'll get more of that.

GW decided to release a Codex this year which I very publically expressed my distate for. I am of course talking about Codex: Spiky Loyalist Marines, or Codex: When Good Marines Go Bad as I like to call it. It was the Codex where Oblits suddenly became Tech-Marines in the fluff, The Lost & The Damned simply became 'the lost', and where Ahriman gained a power weapon, but forgot how to cast spells without having to roll dice. We saw the Legions, like the flavour of Chaos, dissapear into the Eye, only to be replaced with sad aproximations of what once was. It was the day of the Fzorgle, and the day GW transformed over AUD$1000 worth of Daemons that I owned from characterful and dangerous units into generic units with nothing to distinguish them except their (lack of) paint job. As yes, it was a terrible abortive abomination of a Codex, and I feel sorry for all the Legion players and especially the LatD players out there who'll be stuck with it for the next 6 years. Thank the Emperor for the Revisited Project, where I don't have to make a unit more powerful because there's a new plastic kit coming out, or downgrade one because the model is staying the same.

It was the year where Jervis went from, in my mind, the shining beacon of eternal hope at GW with his work on Specialist Games, to being the greatest justification for The Revisited Project. I'd like to thank Jervis for the hideous creations he's had a hand in - Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Chaos. Thanks to those books our group never has to look at our hundreds of man-hours worth of writing and testing and say 'Was it worth it?'. All I have to do is say 'Fzorgle', and we know that the games where armies were defeated by a single squad of Swooping Hawks thanks to some sloppy playtesting, or the late-night arguments over whether a new psychic power is worth 20 or 30 points have been worth it, and is definately the right direction for our group. So thank you again Jervis. You're the worst thing to happen to 40K in a decade, you make Pete Haines look positivley competant and conservative, and thanks to you my faith in our own abilities have been strengthened. The first chance you get, please go back to writing Blood Bowl. You're better at that.

The saddest news of all was that our group did lose one person. I won't go into any details except to say that we don't know how long he'll be gone for, and our thoughts are with him and his 300 unbuild Tactical Marines this Christmas.

So as far as 2008 goes?

Well the first is our massive Apocapyptic bash towards the end of January, as 25,000 points of Guard, 25,000 worth of Eldar and some 10-15,000 points worth of Grey Knights and Blood Ravens take on and equal sized force of Chaos Marines in three massive games over the course of a week. We have been planning this event since Jan '06, and virtually every game we've played in the interim has been building up the storyline to this large event. I hope to cover it in great detail and get some pictures and fluff ready so everyone can enjoy Andronicon II (as we've called it).

After that I'll be shifting to two army projects. The first, as mentioned, is the Necrons, and bringing my painting skills up to scratch, and the other is a small Deathwatch force as I begin to write Codex: Alien Hunters for our group (which reminds me, if anyone has spare 20 Terminator Deathwatch shoulder pads, please let me know!!!). Orks will dominate one of our group, as he winds down on his Eldar army and gets stuck into a real army full of tough Orks (and shiny new models!).

The Revisited Project will move into its next phase, with a core rulebook and about 4 core Codices completed - it's a solid base, and it will have taken over 3 years of work to get it there, but it will definately be worth it once it's done. From there I'll go back to testing with the Tyranids to see if I've reduced their power whilst maintaining their flavour, as well as working on the ever-evolving Imperial Guard Revisited Codex. Others in the group will continue work on the Ork and Tau Codices, and others will simple nod and smile as we tell them 'test this!' and watch as something we've invented completey decimates half an army before we go 'Ok, wait, it's too powerful... we have to change that'. It's a long process, but we enjoy it.

Other than that we'll just wait and see what GW screws up next, so we can laugh from the sidelines as we play our superior (and fun!) ruleset. It won't be Orks, as we've seen that Codex and thanks to Phil Kelly we have a Codex that seems to put the fun back into Orks, a race that found themselves turned into 'Generic Goffs' as they lost their character at the start of 3rd Ed. Who knows, maybe 5th Ed will be the salvation of the game? Bah! Who are we kidding.

    That's all from me...

Played less games this past year due to deployment. However, I had a helluva time at the Baltimore GT in November. I wasn't in the running for anything, but I had a blast with buddies whom I first met back when 2nd edition was in its' heyday. I Ebayed my Word Bearers last March as I had gotten word of what the codex was going to be like. It was a bit painful as I'd used that army for 4 straight years. However, I'd more than gotten my money and enjoyment out of it, so it was time to send it on to somebody else.

For 2008, it will be the year of the Waaagh!!! I've been playing 40K since 1st edition and Orks is the only army I've never built. The new models look great and the Codex is pretty cool. My Eldar are nearly done and I plan on finishing up my last couple of units and that will be it for them. I'm planning on another GT and hopefully the Necronomicon as well. Work will dictate this, unfortunately.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

2007 was the year of Getting Real for me. I finally gave up on my slow-building Lost and the Damned army due to the lack of rules and eBayed them for a song. Also sold off my old Space Marine army which was never intended to be a serious playable force and my untouched Orc and Goblin army. With nothing left to turn to, I bought a few boxes of Ork Boyz in preparation for the new Ork Codex and started a Tau (mostly on foot) army.

Painting has been slow due to the discouragement I got from working on my Lost and the Damned coupled with a move and a new job that takes up more time. 2008 should be much better as we're going to have the option of a four-day workweek starting in a few weeks and I'm going to use that spare day for gaming. My goal is to finish a 2000 point Tau army by July of next year. I also vow to not feel guilty every time I plan a painting period and play World in Conflict (or whatever) instead.

Wow. What a year 2007 has been for me by way of my gaming hobby.

    2007

It started off with me hating GeeW every chance I got, while my DE, CSM and SM sat and collected dust. Taking a quote from HBMC, "The Lost & The Damned simply became 'the lost'" All the while singing the praises of Rackham and Confrontation.

Then Rackham went the way of pre-paints and made "Confrontation" into a LARGE scale "Confrontation". Now, who knows what is going on with that company. With what is happening, you can see me from time to time in a fetal position, in a corner weeping over my Goblin, Dirz, Devs. and Lions, crying out loud and asking, "Why, God? Why?" Waiting to see if Rackham makes it and playing v. 3.5 at my LGS when we can squeeze a game in.

I was one of the people that agreed with HMBC:

H.B.M.C. wrote:GW decided to release a Codex this year which I very publically expressed my distate for. I am of course talking about Codex: Spiky Loyalist Marines, or Codex: When Good Marines Go Bad as I like to call it.

and even posted a link to his well written rant ( :S ) about the new C:CSM.

Then I went and ate some crow. Now I'm back into GeeW and I have to say that we can thanks Apocalypse for that one. Stupid, fun, large sized games. Found out that for me, Apoc. has reminded me why I liked 40K again. The jerk-holes. Then, I go and make a new army around the CSM. I know, I'm a gutless flip-flop. (man, I got alot of flack for that one.)

Got my hands on the new Baneblade and have to admit, I really enjoyed putting that model together.

    2008

    Finish a frikkin' army!!!

I now have CSM, DE and a small Necron army. I'm happy that there are rumors going around that both Necrons and DE will get redone this year. DE getting reworked has got me excited.

I have finally gotten into Warhammer Fantasy and started up my Tomb Kings army. Coming along nicely and got my first two games in. They were ugly, but I got the feel for the game and can't wait to get some more games in.

Waiting to see what happens with Rackham and Confrontation. As I posted before, we will always play v3.5 at the LGS, but I know I'm not to sure about the new version.

Can't wait to see what GeeW has for us in 2K8.

I think I'm going to start a charity for the terminally stupid. You can be our spokes person. -- H.B.M.C.

In a team league, my partner (Scuddman) and I took 3rd place which was also a fair bit of fun.

I also chocked up a significant (for me) amount of painting. I think I managed to finish painting something along the lines of 7 minatures this year. That's quite a bit above my average of 2.3 per year. If I end up going to this RT that's comming up in a few weeks, I might even be motivated enough to paint up 6 more models in just the first month of 2008. It could be yet another record breaking year.

New Year's resloution is to attempt to up my painting skill or speed. Either paint models better in the amount of time it takes me, or paint to same table-top quality, but in less time. Maybe some of both. Even be able to do a presentation quality piece or two.

2007: Started playing 40k. Hell, started playing ANY mini game after about a decade off. Whee! Spent the piles of off time I had from my job to paint ~4000 points of Sisters in a very short amount of time. Well, a few months anyway. Met some fun people at the Portal, and some cool people otherwise. Started a Marine army, and bought parts of about 3 other armies I might start. Got a new job, and now have a lot less time. This just after Apocalypse comes out and gets me all hot and bothered for games on par with the old 15mm historicals I played in highschool.

2008: I want to go to a tournament and get schooled.
I also want to make my first scratch built/total conversion models, which currently I have kits and peices for, but I am really intimidated to start. I also want to suck my wife into the game, because having her want me to tank for our guild in World of Warcraft when I should be painting is something of a problem
Come to think of it, I also want some painting tutoring... I sort of feel like I hit a plateau in my skill.

All in all though, it is nice to have another hobby. Between this, SCA, work and whatnot, I haven't been bored in a long time.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

My goal is to win a GT.

With the third highest battle score of the Las Vegas GT, and the second highest of the Baltimore GT (I would of had a perfect 100 battle points, but I read the mission wrong) I do not have to work on my generalship.

But in 2008 I will work on painting and converting a tough, well comped army.

Well In November of 2008 i got back involved with miniature war-gaming after about a 6 year hiatus. so there's you know that. I bought and have mostly painted a tyranid battleforce along with coming in not last (tied for second to last) in a RTT using a friends army. for 2008 i hope to get my tyranid army finished and working along with building(/converting) a nice new chaos dwarf army for fantasy and also get a lot more games in.

    2007 was okay.

Increased responsibilities at work combined with a dropoff of interest in and support for (sales of) GW stuff in my city resulted in me getting less 40k and WH action than in probably any year since I started playing (99). I also had almost no time or energy for painting, so on that front I was really pathetic.

On the positive side, I still got in the occasional game, and I got out to the amazing Adepticon for the first time. I also attended two independent GTs (Colonial in NJ and Crossroads in upstate NY) for WH, and Baltimore for 40k. And I brought my Wood Elves with me to Amsterdam on a business trip, and arranged a game there with someone online. So I played a game in Europe, which was cool.

    2008:
Paint! I mostly need to paint chaos. I want a better-looking army for Warhammer; one that will rack up decent painting scores at a GT, and I expect Chaos will help me get better soft scores than my Wood Elves, as WE are a bit too common now and tend to get some flack for avoiding the enemy as opposed to fighting straight up. So that’s the big project. It was supposed to be the big project this fall, but a new work schedule has been a significant obstacle. With some practice and a good painting score I expect I can crack the top ten at one or two GTs this year. Once you're there it's usually just a matter of getting a little lucky to win one.

Our team (Cold Steel Mercs) managed 13th out of almost 90 teams at the Adepticon 40k team tournament this year, which we were quite happy with for our first time out. We’d like to beat that this coming year, though we might have to break our previous all-CSM theme, given the limitations of the new codex. I’ll need to do some painting for that, too. How much depends on what lists we finally settle on.

    2007
I got to play at more tourneys than I thought I would (5) and won best painted at 3 of those (including the Brisbane GT) although my gaming dropped due to lack of regular play.

The volume of painting (and posting here) took a nosedive at the start of the year thanks to so much time spent at work, but currently I'm on a rotation that gives free time ++++ so have started another blog and am posting with vim and vigor.

Most of the year I waffled with painting, doing this and that but not really getting any projects done- until I started the lizzies last month.

    2008:
Get 4000 points of lizzies done- shouldn't be too hard just need to buy another saurus characters, templeguard and some chameleon skinks to get up there. After that I'll only have to paint the odd unit to allow gaming flexibility and I'll be able to start the next project. Sylvannian empire... Awwww Yeeaaahhhh....

As much as I hate to say it I think 2008 may be the end of 40k for me. I don't have the time to play, the time to paint or the time to go back over the rules. I love the 40k universe and despise the situation I find the game in.

Get to as many tourneys as I can rejig my shifts around to get to or I'll need to play more friendly games. A new house with car port and a new table should help on the second point.

Don't take the tourney games so seriously. I love to live on the edge in tourney games, jumping up and down when I'm winning and being the sorest loser when I'm, well, losing. So I need to really work to find the middle ground, not be bland but make the game more enjoyable for me and my opponents. Shouldn't be too hard, I'll just go to tourneys now not expecting to do well, there are just too many players who travel to to many tourneys and play each other on a regular basis for me to compete.

Post more on dakka, finally cracking the 10,000 post goal.

well 2007 was a pretty good year, myself as well as my group got back into 40k after a almost 2 year stop from moving and switching jobs etc.. also i got a decent jump in my eldar force with the new models being out and all. most of all i enjoyed finally going to my first tournement-'ard boyz. this was a great thing for me, i thought the models had to be at least basicly painted so my whole group went on a painting frenzy to get everything completed in time for the tourney. needless to say we didnt even have to have them painted, but you live and you learn! i placed around the middle of everyone, 14th out of 32 i believe, so next year i know what i have to do to score more points(read the scenarios!!)

above all else next year i need to do one thing. finish models!! out of the almost 5k in points i have, almost nothing has been completed. almost all are 75-80% done, and only a few single models are even close to being "done". i just get in the bad habit of getting to a certain spot and starting a new squad, or project.

i usually play every wednesday, at least one game, if not 2 smaller ones, but next year i really want to try and get more games in. i spend so much time talking about stratagies and building armies vs. actual play time that i feel i'm not getting my money's worth out of them.

2007 was a big year for me. I resumed my miniatures after a hiatus of 3 or 4 years, and I painted somewhere in the neighborhood of 1700 points of Eldar. I also did a wraithlord conversion that I am proud of. Another highlight of this year was that I gifted 2000 points of valhallan IG to a family member of mine so that he can start playing ( about half painted ). I used a foam playing surface a couple months ago for the first time that I purchased ten years ago. During the christmas holiday, I purchased or made quite a few pieces of ruins terrain.

    Resolutions for two double-aught eight:

Finish painting 2500 points of Eldar, with vehicles, characters, and elites painted to as high a standard as I can achieve.

This one is a maybe: Purchase a 'nid or ork army and use the dipping method to paint it.

Try to form some sort of local gaming group, even if it is just a once a week or every other week Necromunda group.

2007: After being away from miniature gaming for 5 (?) years, saw the (no longer) new Wraithlord model. Bought 2000 points of Eldar. Also bought 1500 points of SoB. Can't remember why.

2008: Paint the damn things. One hopes.

@huge_Eldar, Is Lodi anywhere near Lake Elsinore? If so, there is a store there called fun-n-games that is having a 40K RTT this Saturday. Maybe you could get into your second tournament.

Aye, 2007 was a good year for gaming, despite complications with the then-girlfriend-and-now-financee. Played more games of Warhammer (both flavors) in 2007 than I have in any other year, and not only went to Games Day for the first time in years but brought models and gamed it up there too. More gaming probably also had something to do with 2007 being the Year When Armies Were Finished - more armies (1500 CSM, 2000 Eshin) were finished in 2007 than every other year combined. Easy thing to say, but very happy to reach that point at last.

Hoping to keep the gaming up in 2008, and getting back on track with painting. Aiming to get 1000 Ogres finally done, as well as getting Tomb Kings to 1000 and then 2000. CSM will be ramping to 2000 soon, and I've got those Tau to get to 1000 as well. Sounding like a lot, but with grad school next fall my time to sit and paint is limited
