And how does it compare to the original?

It feels silly buying prepainted plastics for figs that are available
unpainted and in metal, but the no-painting deal has the feel of
getting someone to play really quickly. I believe the term xenite
used the other day was "gateway drug".

Looking at the sculpts, do they seem worth repainting, especially
considering the fact that you paid extra money for them to paint
it for you?

I picked up the box on a lark because it means my friends who mostly
computer game or whatever might have an easier time with a pick up
and play with it, but it all depends on the rules. I'm not getting
a good sense for the game reading the rulebook, but games
out of the box seem fast.

What will the normal army points size be?

Pete picked up the box: the figs are pretty decent: not soft plastic, perhaps even more 'solid' than the AT-43 figs. The ones I saw probably could use just a wash to be 'perfect', though are fine as-is.

As to the game itself, as long as it's better than the mumbo-jumbo 3rd ed. was, it'll be a fun game. 3 was supposed to be fun, but I couldn't make hide nor hair of the rules.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

I have no real experience with the new rules, just some third edition games. But from what I have read and seen it looks like the new rules are a bit more streamlined and scale better for larger games (inspired by at-43). You (sort of) lose the (sometimes complex) fine detail of third edition for easier access to the rules. It's not a skirmish game anymore, the new confrontation seems to be more of a cleaned up and updated ragnarok which was their old big game rules set and was based and somehow compatible with the old confrontation.

If I remember correctly the want to reintroduce additional rules for skirmish level games through cry havoc (their magazine) at some point.

The rules can be found here . And here are the army lists. Again if I remember correctly these are only temporary and will be replaced with army books that have multiple lists (and all the other fun stuff that people expect from army books). They have a new card design/stats so the card for all the "old metal miniatures" will be available in one pack (per army) at some point and I think these packs are supposed to be not too expensive.

For comparison you can download the 3.0 rules (and 3.5 in French) on their homepage (Confrontation -> Utilities) too.

Guys, are there any links to information on this new edition of Confrontation and the new plastic minis!? I can't find anything anywhere, and I've scoured the net for it!!!

Are you serious? Did you even read through this thread?

Above I posted links to the rules and temporary army lists. These links lead to the official Rackham site. Start browsing there.
They have a whole navigation bar on the left (games, news,...) for you to explore. And in addition to that they have a link to their English forums in their top navigation bar. That's the place where you can find people talking (i.e. writing) about the situation that is happening now, be it the new plastic miniatures, new rules, or whatever.

I think the rulebook misses the boat on promotional
material. They don't really say what the different miniatures
are, or what the armies they plan to release will be. I know
they probably have been releasing information via their
magazines and such, but rackham fans pick up the
magazine. Potential buyers see the starter box and buy
that first.

There is no "sort of" to it - skirmish is DEAD in the latest edition of the rules.

And financially, Rackham has no incentive to reintroduce them.

Well, I guess they do actually, as they really aren't doing that well.

And CRY HAVOC! is moving to an online only "magazine" too, as well.

Who knows what the future holds for R? (Maybe the Shadow?)

And while I'll admit 3rd edition Confrontation was complex, all it took was a demo and you were off and running in a wonderfully deep game. All gone now, tears in rain...
