Does anyone know any good replacements for those flimsy flyer bases? I never can seem to get anythign to balance on them other than a speeder or some such.

which part is causing the problem? the base itself, or the rod that goes into the model?

You might try This page.
It's a link to "Dan's Dark Eldar" conversion page. He describes how he replaces all of his skimmer bases for his DE raiders.
I've used his method's before, to some success.
I too I'm looking for any other good ideas for replacement flyer bases, I hate the regular GW ones.

Eh, its more the base as a whole just not being very stable. The little hole on the model just doesnt seem to be located at the model's center of mass. Furthermore, the little post has enough room in the hole for the model to just kind of sit crooked.

What I do is not use that little peg. First I locate the center of balance and then make a new hole large enough for the top of the base shaft to fit into. The shaft's slight taper ensures a tight fit, it's much stronger than using the peg, and is easily removable.
