Subject: What's a good metallic spray?

Looking to paint terrain with more metal to them than
concrete (mostly armorcast), and I'd like a nice metallic
spray to help me get the job done. Would furniture metallics
look right on terrain, or does it just obscure the details?
If there aren't any good options, I can always just prime
the thing black and get a cheap gigantic brush and drybrush.

lemmingspawn wrote:Here are the problems I faced using silver undercoat:
1. Loss of details - metallic spray would be thicker in my mind
2. Gloss only available - getting the paint to stick
3. Affecting other paint going over it - enamel (shouldn't be an issue) and metallic (shining through)
So I have had success in all three areas!
1. Loss of detail - dulux silver is fine, just don't spray too much and it covers BETTER than white or black undercoat due to the paint pigmentation and it needs less paint
2. Add more detergent than I normally do to destroy the surface tension. This is only really necessary for the first couple of layers to get the paint something to adhere to
3. Inevitably this will have some bearing but at least it's a spray and I won't be getting as much cross contamination in the other paints. I'll just need to watch my layers, but it should actually work out better than normal because, being a spray, there's no chance of contaminating the wrong paint water and getting flecks in the opaque non metallic paints.
I'm not sure what he used for spray though. I know you've seen the results in his blog ^_-.

Home Depot has a line of metal sprays that I use on terrain. They have worked fine on the IMEX plastics. I think they'd be fine on Armor Cast resin.

Thanks, Rich.
Your pirates look awesome, by the way. I picked up some
for Warmachine the other day.
You should get the Press Gang when it's eventually
released.

Traditionally, people use Testor's Silver for this kind of thing. I don't know if that would work for you.
I imagine you could take the shine down with drybrush and washes when you weather it.

in a 'model military internal' mag (jan 2008 issue 21) a paint by Mr Metal Color is mentioned - it's a buffable paint that gives a realistic finish. can be bought for about £2 + p&p & comes from Hong Kong. Comes in 9 colours inc chrome & gold. Haven't tried it yet but may do some time in the new year.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |
