I'm a very new player (played a game at 1200 pts that went well) and gearing up a 1750 pt army for a few competative games at my local shop. I've put together what looks like a decent list to my inexperianced eye. The list is actually pretty cheap $ wise, one battleforce, one monolith phalax, one lord, a box of warriors and 3 wraiths (all at a very nice 20% off).

I like a very shooty army with a lot of flexibility to let me change up as needed, I intend to utilize the monoliths more like tanks as much as possible and just start teleporting through when I want to move or very badly need to teleport. The lord usually takes a squad of warriors and veils as needed to hit specific targets. The wraiths are a new addition and I intend to use them like the lord as an assasination squad to go after squishy things. Most of the list is very defensive.

What obvious weaknesses can you guys see here? Things that might be better than others instead on the list? I was debating adding in spiders or dropping the scarab count to 5 and giving them disruption fields.

1x Lord with res/veil
2x Monoliths
7x Scarabs
3x Wraiths
3x Destroyers
13x Warriors
13x Warriors
14x Warriors

Phase out at 11 (47 units count as necrons)

ROVOD Lord: Good stuff
2x Monoliths: Good stuff
13 x warriors 13x warriors 14x warriors: Now, the usual rule for Necrons is as few Warriors as possible, but if you are going VP denial, with your liths, this can work. I'd still cut down to 2 units of 10 though.
3x Wraiths: Eww! Wraiths don't get it done. Drop these guys like a bad habit.
7x Scarabs: Great units, they do good work for cheap, fit well with the VP denial theme
3x Destroyers: Need more or less of these, one unit doesn't cut it. If you drop the Wraiths you can get a second unit of these, 2 units hanging around work much better.

In general, hang back behind your monoliths, shooting at the enemy. When they get close use your Monoliths to keep them back, warping the warriors over to rapid fire. Pull them out of CC when they get charged. The Scarabs should waylay the most threatening enemy forces.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

This list is much better with 2 x 10 warriors and as little fat as possible.

Drop the destroyers, wraiths, and 20 warriors (down to 2 x 10), for something like the 600ish points you need to add 20 or so immortals.

I have seen a warrior based necron army that works quite well i would say drop a scarab base and the wraiths for a Necron lord with res orb, and drop 3 warriors from a 13 man squad for another destroyer.

immortals are not a thing to look over as they aare one of the best shooty infantry in the game

Correction: immortals are the best shootie infantry in the game. Nothing in the game compares on a point to point basis.

I would love to put in a full squad of immortals and have them running amok with the lord, I just gotta get the money for them since a full squad will put me back about 80. In that case I would drop a bunch of warriors and tighten up elsewhere to make them fit.

I recall some guy had come up with a pretty cool way to convert warriors into immortals, involving extra rods or whatever. Might try that.

I loathe metal models and would do it just for that reason, not even respective of cost.

Lonshot is correct. There is nothing better for a Necron army than 2 units of 10 Immortals. They are a rock solid choice and should not be overlooked.
