Marvelous work on the Assassin and Glam. Both models are great examples of the glory of days gone by. Enforcers also looking very cool.

Like many hobbyists of A Certain Age, I have strong nostalgic feelings for Citadel models from the early-t-mid 80's, but after painting the Dark Judges last month, I've come to realize that a lot of the stuff from that era is objectively not very good. Glam and the Assassin are both Jes Goodwin models, and as such stand head and shoulders above pretty much everything else. What a stellar talent!

I cranked out a few more Enforcers to round off November:

These three came in the same bag as the Defender Shields I posted last time, and rather than lose all the tiny arms and heads, I went ahead and assembled them. They are from the DZv1 kickstarter, and are thus restic, with all that implies. The first generation of restic Enforcers were really well done-- mold lines were generally accessible for cleaning, and the details were easily as sharp as Mantic metals at that time. This set feels like kind of a rush job, and I kind of gave up on cleaning them part way through. You can't really tell on the tabletop, so they're usable for games, but I'm quite glad that I don't have to do any more of them. Here's a grous shot:

Next up some Space Cops:

The model on the far right is a KS exclusive (?) Kara Black from Sedition Wars, the rest are bounty hunters from Antediluvian Miniatures. I'll be using them are futuristic police officers, so they'll be in dark, serious colors.

Amen on the 80’s era figures. Truly amazing how well Jes Goodwin’s sculpts hold up. They’re clearly of the era, but manage to have incredible character, vision, and execution.

The Mantic guys look suitably muddled and grubby. Like “real” military should be…

At least some of that is due to the mediocre casting, but that is the effect I was hoping to achieve.

I do try to take off the most egregious mold lines, but I don't do much more than scrape with a needle file and then with a wire brush.

The Assault Enforcer is simultaneously the best and most redundant model in this set. He has a cool, dynamic pose, but since the hard plastic sprue comes with the same equipment, this model is far less vital than the sniper or engineer.

Since the great Nighthaunt and Skaven painting sprees? ‘Fraid not. We’ve been playing Stargrave lately, and I built a crew, but they’re sadly the great albino astronaut horde (on the plus side, they do have heads!). First couple of paint scheme experiments for them didn’t work out like I’d hoped, and I just haven’t had the spirit move me….

Always great to see how you’re able to continue to keep paint at volume and such a high level. Bravo, sir. Bravo, indeed!

Nah…. We played some Frostgrave as well. Pre-Rona. Didn’t quite click for me. I like Stargrave better. But both games are very, very random with that d20 combat system. So you just kinda gotta go with the flow and not worry so much about winning and just have fun. But in Stargrave, everyone has at least some armor, and a gun. So the randomness feels a bit muted compared to Frostgrave.

TPK?

Total Party Kill. Everyone having guns meant a lot more casualties than a game of FG. I agree that the game can be quite swingy, but in melee you at least get a chance to hit back.

Maybe I'll give SG another try and see what happens.

The Space Cops are coming along. Three of the five are dudes in uniforms without much personality, so I'm batch painting them with lots of washes/glazes to speed things up. They may be ready to share by mid week. In the meantime:

Three more buildings made from what would otherwise have been rubbish. The smaller are made from instant noodle containers, the larger used to hold shortening. The doors are from the Sedition Wars terrain pack, with a few bits from the Maelstrom's Edge terrain sprue, pipes from an old Platformer set. The platform is poorly-cut cardstock with supports from a Deadzone terrain accessory sprue. I may have gone a little overboard with the weathering...

Great work on the scratchbuild terrain! I have collected some big pudding cups to convert them in the near future. Only problem is that the Medge terrain sprue is quite expensive with customs coming on top of the shipping.

Dreadball minis look cool and am excited for space cops. Can‘t have enough of those.

I added some decals from a left over Gundam transfer sheet, but they get lost in all the weathering. Maybe for the next round (there is an endless supply of ramen cups), I'll add some more stuff.

Ask and ye shall recieve:

I based their uniforms off of the Detroit Metro police from Robocop, which in retrospect may have been too dark. Their finished, though, so that's something. Here's a group shot:

I also finished the Alpha Simian:

His paintjob was inspired by the Ultra Humanite, a Golden Age DC villain. The gold disk on his chest doesn't look exactly gold, but I'm not entirely sure how to do NMM on a flat surface like that. He's based for Dreadball, but as he'll likely be spending more time in Deadzone, I have to figure out a basing option for that, as well.

I have started on Kravastor, but haven't gotten past the first basecoat, so nothing to share there.

Thanks. I've not picked up Overdrive. Is it worth it? Alpha Simian performed pretty well in two games of Deadzone over the weekend. He does a lot of damage, but draws a lot of fire.

Yeah, it's a lot of fun. It does feel a bit annoying if you have all the figs that you're getting them again but it does mean both coaches can draft from all the players. Alpha Simian isn't coming out officially till the next wave in Jan/Feb though (but having playtested him, he's among my favourites). Because you draft 3 giants to your team you need a mix of speed, strength and finesse players to be optimal.

Kravastor is finished:

The official model is black with red armor and bright green lighting effects. Based on my research (or "research," which was just a Google search), most spiders are brown. As loyal readers of my P&M Blog, Paint Everything Brown is one of my trademark techniques, so that's the direction I took. I'm still not very good at lighting effects, but at least you can tell that the blue parts are lit up. Please ignore the mold lines-- this is a Mantic restic model, and thus too much effort to clean.

I may or may not get around to the Chovar. I already have one in metal that would work just as well, and I have a lot of other DZ models lined up. We'll see.

Neither green nor orange are brown, so they wouldn't fit in the Everything Brown paradigm

I wasn't planning on playing Mazon Labs, but I realized that my Sedition Wars stuff would work pretty well for just about everything in their list, so that's one more faction with no monetary outlay.

To close out the year, I finished some models for my Deadzone Rebs. First is an Yndij leader/Living Legend:

And then some Sorak Swordspawn:

And here are all three together:

I really need to figure out how to use the digital camera for photographing minis. Until very recently, I'd been using the camera on my old iPhone 6--no worries, no fuss, every shot was in focus and appropriately lit. Then Apple decided it was too old to update, and my current cheap Android phone just doesn't do the trick.

I have a few more things on the slab, but may not have time to actually finish anything before the end of the year. We'll see.

Thanks. He's a pretty cool model, and my son has already taken him on a test drive in the Deadzone. I haven't really looked at Overdrive, as I'm not ready to start another new game. Is it worth picking up?

2021 is winding down, and it looks like I won't get in much more painting before January, it's time for the Year In Review:

2020 was a big year for Frostgrave here, and early 2021 continued the trend. I finished off the metal models from the FG Soldiers 2 Nickstarter, started the FG Knights box, and made my first serious foray into NMM.
Spoiler:

I think I may have burned out on fantasy models, because I cranked out three Dreadball teams in February: The Sulentic Shards, the Fran-Tar Philosophers, and the Iwachiku Blackpinks (my own take on the Void Sirens). I also found time and inspiration to do some resin spider nests.
Spoiler:

March doesn't appear to have been a very productive month. I painted three Deadzone Enforcers, but the NMM didn't really turn out. I seem to have spent a lot of hobby time on a buidling for the LoER contest:
Spoiler:

April was kind of a scattershot month. I painted up all the obstacles for Dreadball Xtreme (I have yet to play the game, but the crates and such see a lot of use in Deadzone), and large resin mech for the Dakka Painting Challenge, and some single models for Kings of War, Rogue Stars, and Frostgrave:
Spoiler:

In May, my son and I were playing our way through Thaw of the Lich Lord, inspiring me to paint up some cultist wizards and some resin terrain that had been sitting in a box for years. I also finished the house and an Oldhammer Chaos Champion, which got me first place in the Dakka Painting Challenge:
Spoiler:

June was another sort of random month, with more FG cultists, my first (and so far only) Stargrave crew, some steampunk models, and some resin terrain:
Spoiler:

I'll put up part 2 tomorrow.
