So, I play Sisters. Yet, somehow, I have a lot of Marines on the boards here. That is about to change. I just bought a pile of both girls and, well, special girls, and so I will be posting the WIP new stuff, as well as slotting pics of the old stuff. Particularly in the Sisters themselves, you can really see how I went from "Haven't painted in over a decade" to "Looks like I painted, but only within the decade." Interesting stuff...

The first additions I cranked out in a day and a half, I was so in love with the models (and excited about painting something other than red and black, or blue).

Firstly, my two new counts as Vindicare. I just loved these models, and snapped them up. First, breaking my all X chromosome theme, V is for Vindicare (or Voyostrian).

In progress (though almost done)

And done.

These minis are so cool, they dimmed the lights in my painting room. Or the sun went out. Whatever.
I absolutely adore this model though, and bought the two pack just for this man.

Next up, the first of many non-GW figs that are filling out the ranks of my Inquisitorial toys.
In progress:

And done (though the skin looks blotchy... I need to check that)

The colors on both are a little more vibrant than the camera collected... I will try and get better pics later.
I love this mini though. I had fun putting on the cammo, am comforted that the bright hair will help me spot it on the table, and the fact she is rocking what looks like a bolt action 306 makes me very happy.

Now, for what's comming... a lot of leather, and a chick with a passion for the stabby bitz! Part one of my crusade to put the nipples back in gaming after the shameless covering of the daemonettes.

Stay Tuned!

Nice minis! I don't really like the name of the convent though. It doesn't make sense to me. Unrequited? The emperor doesn't love them back? That seems kind of heretical.

Props on both Wehr, fantastic models each. I've seen some stellar conversions using the Vossy sniper, and that femme sniper is just a rock solid model. Cred on using them as counts as vindicators, gives them rules to do them proud. Paint is rocking too.

Looking forward to the stabby girls, particularly if nips happen to be involved ... I'm guessing Repentia ftw? For the hell of it I'll note I actually have a unit of 18 as allies for my own DIY marines, but who knows then they'll have paint tossed at them

Surprisingly enough, NOT Repentia! This thread will really start as a feast of non-GW minis. Sort of a "Highlights of Wehr's jaunts through The War Store while at work."

Heh, the Emperor never calls them back. The girls know that he is just busy, and will seriously ask them out any week now.
In reality, I am still drawing blanks on what to name them. The Sisters of Unrequited Love was a prototype from back when they were to be for my wife, and have Pucca emblems upon them. It didn't make a lot more sense then, but the name sort of stuck, like a dart in my neck.

I am going to try and post a new pic every two days. This week is going to suck though... due to the bad weather I worked from home, which was great, because I got to be here to see water start seeping into my bedroom from the iced over ceiling. Something tells me my spare cash is going to buy a roofer a new computer and land raiders, not me :(

I think that 'Sisters of Sighs' or something like that still has a nice wistful feel but isn't such a head scratcher. And is less likely to disenfranchise the spouse, if such is desirable.

Eh, the spouse isn't as interested at learning to play 40k as the sounds she issues sometimes suggest. She thinks the models are pretty and cool, but that's about all.

I still kind of like the idea of a Cannoness wearing a Varsity Letter jacket as a Cloak of Saint Aspira. The Black Templar player in my area and I usually frame our games as arguments over who loves the Emperor more, and I think that little bit of kit would put the ball squarely in my court.

So, I really haven't been painting much this week. Lack of sleep has drawn more towards the mindless farming of ore in WoW than the delicate painting of same for 40k.
However! I did play around and get some base coat on my new Inquisitorial toys, so let's see some.

Firstly, the Stabby Inq and Familier.

Now, you can't see the detail well because the camera wasn't focusing perfectly, but there isn't much to see at the moment. These are at the "color test" stage, where I decide if I like where they are going. While I have been willing to dip, strip and completely redo minis I didn't like the result of, I try to avoid pissing 8-9 hours down a rat hole like that.

Next, the Accolyte/Interrogators with Mancatchers:

... I would do exactly as they say.
Honestly, I got the models because they are really cool looking, and I don't have enough skunk style gas masks in my collection. I may never have enough.

Next, Power Fist Servitors:

Now these are a bit of a stretch, since they don't have power fists and don't have the extra ccw they are supposed to. However, with a power maul the size of a Sister, I don't think there will be much confusion. Besides that, it isn't as though I will be bringing them to an RTT anytime soon, so that's all the rationalization I need for them. The temptation to paint them up like American Gladiators is really strong with those boots, but then I would have to model up a mess of permed '80's rocker hair bleached blonde for them, and I don't know that I am up to that.

Finally in the new toys catagory, the medics:

Here you can REALLY see the difference in scale between the 3rd ed. Citadel mini and the newer 28mm Heroic Scale fig. It looks like my wife and I when we go out (except I generally only wear my breast emphasizing corset around the house.)

For those of you saying "AHA!!! See! All those fancy non-GW figs are way off scale, and will look really wierd when on the table with GW figs!" I submit this:

They could be twins. Most of the figs are the same size (or VERY slightly taller) than Space Marines, or in this case a Kasrkin Sgt. The only ones taller are the Inquisitor and the medic, but even then only by a very tiny amount. I think it is the pumps. For the Powerfist Girls at least, I see them coming from a higher grav world much like Ogryns, which is why they are so strong and able to swing Buick sized maces around.

Now, the one thing that is throwing me off a little is how to paint them so they all tie in. As you will see in my next post, I kind of color coordinated my other Inquisitor's retinue so they all tied together (except for fatty; no one likes him.) These, I don't know so much. I thought a purple theme to get away from red and black, but I don't know if I can do it in such a fashion as ties Joan d'Arc there with her acolytes the Betty Page twins. I am going to have to go dream about that a while... in the mean time, any suggestions are appreciated!

And now, a little of the old to compliment the new.

Inquisitor Laurel Hardy, and the shooty bunch.

This is an example of how I almost stripped a mini because I got so frustrated with it. The main problem was the eye brows; you can't really see it in the picture, but she has black eye brows that make her look like a man something fierce. Otherwise I was finally happy with her, so after toying with them a bit I just sighed and accepted the fact she is post op, and even in the 41st millenium, nothing good comes of that.

You can kind of see what I mean about tying them together with colors, or at least my attempt. I went for a red and dark yellow theme across the board, so with the exception of the fat brown sage who didn't get a jersey because they didn't tell them when they were handing them out, they all sort of go together despite being rather disparate models. Bonus points to people who guess where that plasma cannon servitor comes from.

And the reasons I started taking an Inquisitor in the first place, assassins:

Nothing really special to talk about with them. They are fun, except when the Callidus pops up next to a broadside unit on turn 2, proceeds to rol 6(!) consecutive 1's, and then gets squished by the xenos abomination. That is not fun at all.

Bonus point question: For 3 points per model, name the range of all the figures from the previous post.

Thanks I just adored the sniper so much I got him done in two afternoons, feeling as though I made nary an unwanted brush stroke. The Inquisitor, on the other hand, sat on my desk for some 8 months before I got around to her, and it took me forever to get the red armor and cloak looking the way I wanted it to.

Looking at things again, I realize I didn't drill out the heavy bolters... and those death cult assassins need work... hmm. Maybe when I get around to basing the army, I will tackle those.

Ok, I think at this point I am ready to admit that I paint a lot more than I take pictures and post.
Due to my favorite brush breaking down, I gave the Inquisitor a rest and started putting base colors on a pile of Sisters I bought recently. Mainly I decided to work on an 8 girl Retributor squad. Then, praise the Emperor, my package from Neal arrived, with fancy new Vallejo red and purple paint, and splendid Reaper "made from real succubus eye lash" brushes.
So...

Here we have the Foundation red with a highlight or two of the Vallejo. The Vallejo paint was kind of wierd for me, being much thinner out of the bottle than I am used to. With practice though, I have come to the conclusion that it is exactly the consistancy I would thin paint to for highlighting, were I able to thin paint properly. I just need to get used to the idea of doing 2-3 coats of it to really cover well, the plus side being it practically blends itself.

Then, mixed it with some orange, and highlighted more!

I really am pleased with how well it worked. Maybe it was just the sudden easing of job related stress since last Friday, but man, I was feeling it.

Feeling it so much, I didn't take any more pictures until they were all done...

So, yesterday I turned my attentions towards the Inquisitor and the purple.
The purple needed serious attention. Apparently the bottle had been sitting in a warehouse the better part of a millenia, and ALL the pigment was at the bottom in a rich sludge. I had to put in a clean screw from my old oven, and stir with a paint brush handle to get it mixed. It is working better now, but I was slightly perturbed.
However, after that preperation, the paint worked very nicely. After a far to liberal application of Didi's Magic Ink, I was highlighting up from almost black, and it functioned pretty darn well.

Then I took a half day off work today, and went to town on the rest of the retinue:

Even with poor pictures taken in a few seconds, I think the purple stands out pretty well. I am really quite pleased with the results, and even when I mixed it with my cheap paint, the Vallejo retained it's qualities nicely. The only thing I don't like much about it is that it dries rather glossy, which makes judging if it is dry a little awkward, and makes it more difficult for me to put layers on etc. due to not really being able to get a good look. It's a minor problem at worst though, and I suspect that, like the consistancy thing, I will get used to it soon enough.

"I said EAT YOUR F---KIN LIMA BEANS! EAT THEM!"

I did put a few more layers of skin tone on the Betty Page Twins after you left, as well as getting the mid tones on the rest of the group.

I am glad you like the black and purple scheme. I figure when I finally cross the line from Puritan to Radical, I will be prepared for my final fall into the maddness of Slaanesh. I would hate to have to repaint my entire collection just because I surrendered my sanity to an insane daemon born of debauchery. I am worried enough about filling out the paperwork on my 401k.

After digging through the archives to find my damn thread, here it is! Time for an update!

Jumping right in... INQUISITOR!

Despite my issues getting decent pictures this week, I am terribly happy with how she came out. The fact her familier there has sort of a William F. Buckley look helps I think. I need to get him a snifter of scotch I think.
The ony thing that bugs me a bit is that my flesh tone paint has gone traitor on me, getting oddly clumpy. I don't know if it was not enough thinner, or the alignment of the stars, but I am seriously thinking it needs to be replaced post haste. A whole case of Vallejo is sounding pretty good now. Looking at the rest of the retinue you will see why.

Servitors with Power fist. Getting there, just that these are not as exciting to me at the moment, so they are sort of languishing.

Betty Page Twins

These two you can see some of the thick skin tone issues. Granted, there is like 10 layers of paint there, but still, it is irking me.
The other issue blocking their swift completion is that I want to add some more color to them, but I can't really think where. I am considering a dark red on the canisters on their backs, and yellow/white lenses for the eyes of the gas masks, but that doesn't seem enough. The "armor" will be shinier, but I can't help thinking I should add maybe some color to the gloves or something to make them stand out more. Apparently 25mm women in leather and gas masks don't stand out enough. Who knew?

Didn't occur to me when I took the picture.

Next up! Celestians:

For some reason, the phrase "money shot" keeps running through my mind looking at these pics.

Somehow, slightly different units in my armies always end up being case studies for different color schemes. In this case I sacrificed 9 girls to be Celestians, and designated a 10th to be another Cannoness/Palantine to run with them. Should be fun to pop in a rhino and zip around Apoc games. Or something. I am still not convinced the unit is any good, but I fervently NEED every unit possible for them.

And something old to go with the new:

Saint Celestine and Retinue

Another example of changing schemes for the hell of it. I wanted Big SC to have a gang of girls to roll with, back when I was unaware that she was worth maybe 2/3 of her points. Still, I love the model, and she makes it out for big Apoc games. The other plus is that I can easily tell my two Seraphim units apart on in the box and in the field.

Hopefully I will get a better picture later... I have been having issues with lighting of late.

Didn't she eat one of my Kharns? I'm guessing Kharn 5 or 6 - one of the whelps of the litter

Pics aren't too bad, and lots of good things happening. The INQ and friends look nice, particularly the faces - and the lips / eyes even more specifically. My ogres have big blubbery lips and large-if-squinty eyes and I don't paint them anything but flesh tone and vacant white, respectively.

Look forward to the celestians, white armor is groovy.

Yes, Celestine dropped a Kharne, but only after he had been wounded by an Eversor or 2. I had a good game with her a while back where she dropped a unit, then died, then came back to damage another one. Still, pretty meh.
Thanks man, I have been working on getting better at faces since that is often what I spend the most time looking at, and the most time reviling when it looks wierd. That and I had to match her eye shadow with her cloak to really drive home the control freak Inquisitor look I was going for. At least to me. Maybe most girls co-ordinate their eye liner and clothing.

I have some pics of a 90% test Celestian and some demi done ones I will try and post tonight. I am really happy with the way they are coming out.

I actually am not having much issue with layers, unlike my Terminators. I put on a coat of the Astronomicon Grey (the really pale stuff) then washed with a blue color which is probably pretty close to Ultra Marine. After that, maybe two coats of thinned white, with the second coat mostly on the high parts. I will post pics tonight of the 90% finished girl, the girls after white highlights, and the rest of the blue bunch.

And let me tell you, I would LOVE to be able to buy a box of Sisters heads. The gasmasks are awesome, and once you get the trick of painting them down, the other heads don't necesssarily look like post op's. Some still do though.

Damnit, I just want plastic Sisters in general.

Ok, here's that update I promised two days ago, but got sick and didn't do.

The girl on the left is the sorta look I am going for. White armor, shaded with blue, red cloak and gold insignia. I might do something with trim on the cloak. I do love trim.
You can see the progression of the colors too. After the Astronomicon Grey in the previous posts, the blue ink (middle) then a layer or two of thin white, then highlight just a little where needed and add gold trim (carefully). These are a bit more work than the normal sisters, but not too terrible. I probably wouldn't be too inclined to do 30+ of them though.

This is kind of a neat pic. Despite the camera focusing on the wrong damn things, the watery reflection of the marines in the plastic dish is pretty cool.

Nice stuff.

Last night at my local store I saw someone working on dipped sisters. It was crazy. He paints on the dip, but still. Anyway, your stuff is sweet.

I actually looked at his rendition of the inquisitor after seeing yours with her man brows, and he had left off the eyebrows entirely. Have you considered that as the better part of valor, or is even bringing it up very mean of me?

The improvement is huge.

Lovely collection of minis. I would suggest converting in some GW weapons and parts to the non GW figs to really tie the whole lot together. The first Sniper is really nice, but the Lady =I= and her little servant are the pick of the bunch for me. I think I want to convert that sniper model into something - so thanks for inspiration!

Where are topless gasmask chicks from? Maybe you said it aready, but I was partially blinded by the combination of a gas mask and a pair of titties on something approximately 28mm and made of metal

Mannahnin: Thanks, though Inquisitor Laurel is a tad sensitive about her brows. She has dedicated servitors to pluck them daily, but to no avail...
I did try and thin or erase them after adding them in, but sort of gave up after not being able to cover them without a mess of paint (my skin tone paint doesn't cover black at all, part of the reason I have a multi-cultural Sisters Repentia squad, but that's a tale for another day.) Still, part of me likes the idea of an Inquisitor who reminds me of my elementary school librarian. She never quite got popular with the boys, and so takes out her pent up frustration on heretics.
Still, I learned my lesson. No more eye brows on girls unless they are a light color. Eye shadow might well become my new method of defining the brow. (Carmandy, eat your heart out.)

Migsula: Thanks, though you haven't seen anything yet! I haven't put the "first time painting in a decade" minis up yet, let alone the pile of old stuff I dug out of my parent's basement a few weeks back. You want to see improvement? Let me put up some old HeroQuest plastics painted right after I discovered "washes".
Actually, I do need to put up some pictures of stuff from when I was in middle school. Piles of old Ral Partha stuff, Battletech things, all manner of things I forgot I even had.

You are right though, I need to add a few weapons and details to make the off brand mini's fit in a bit better. I am thinking I will put a little purity seal on the sword little Will is holding, but I can't think of anything I really want to do on the Inquisitor. She is so pure and perfect... The chicks with the giant mauls are going to get Imperial tatoos on their faces I think, sort of a mix of New Zealand "OMG I AM A SCARY MO FO!" and an Imperial eagle. I am still planning it, the limiting factor being "what can I reliably do with a brush?"

For the Betty Page Twins I am still a little stuck. They are so slender compared to GW stuff, that things like Purity Seals seem overly large. I am thinking that color and an I decal on their hip plates might just be the best bet to tie them in. Either that, or when I get around to basing the lot of them, put a mess of skulls by their feet.
They are Dark Age minis, by the way. I think they are of the Skaard or Forsaken factions. Both are practically chock full of figures I want to make an excuse for being in my army. I have what will be a DH Inquisitor with Psycannon and Annointed Spear already in the planning stages. Even more amusing though, the Betty Page Twins do have "tops" on: one has nipple clamps of some sort, and the other has what looks like electrical tape crossed over the bits. You know, gotta keep it clean for the kids.

Purity seals would fit both perfectly (=I= and servant) and really 40kfy them! If you make them from aluminum foil, they stay slender and give a new sense of scale.

Goes to check out dark ages stuff...

Huh, foil? That never occured to me! I usually use GS to make little strips and squish a seal into the top, and I had contemplated using whisper thin plasticard, but foil? Is it strong enough? Do you need to reinforce it at all?
I can barely control my excitement! After painting Sisters for so long, it seems wrong if I don't paint at least 2 purity seals on a mini. Being able to make them from scratch with less difficulty and less bulk sounds great!
