I've got a feeling that I'm being as thick as @@@@ to what shouldn't even be a question.

This came up in my game last night....
I have a chaplain who has joined a squad of assualt marines and has then assualted an enemy squad.

The rules state that my chaplain and assualt marines fight as though they were two seperate units (as per multiple combat rules)
Obviously the marines can only make attacks if they are within 2" of another assualt marine already in base-to-base as the chaplain is considered seperate. This bit I understand.

For the enemy attacking me back
The enemy has to nominate which unit he is attacking when allocating attacks (my chaplain or my marines) obvously if he is in base-to-base he is forced to attack that model. (if in b2b with both he can choose etc)

The problem I had is when i read the rules for the IC, it says that only the models in base to base can attack an IC so I took that as other models cannot attack the IC even if within 2" of a model in base-to-base with the IC as they themselves aren't in base-to-base.

Is this right???? because it seems a little stupid if true. I'm hoping that I misread or mis-interprited the rules.
Cheers

You are not completely right.

If a model in a unit that is fighting a CC against multiple units his allocation of attacks depends on who he is in base to base with if any.

If the model is in BtB with the IC and another model in the unit he may choose to allocate his attacks against either but cannot split his attacks.

If he is in base to base with the IC, he may attack the IC only. If in BtB with the unit only then he may only attack the unit.

If he is not in BtB he may allocate his attacks to any model within 2", so he can allocate his attacks to the model in BtB with the IC as long as he himself is not in BtB with another model.

Snooggums has it right. Guys that are not in base to base with anyone can allocate attacks to anywhere that has a friendly model in base to base within 2" of the the attacker.

Threads should be like skirts: long enough to cover what's important but short enough to keep it interesting.

Cheers for the clarification everyone. Next time this crops up I'll be well informed.

Simplest way to deal with IC's in CC is to think of them as units of their own.

As such they must be in BtB to fight and can kill and be killed by any model engaged in their CC scrap.

The fact that a second CC is taking place all round the IC is nothing stranger than if two other separate units were in a CC together.

In short GW rulings are void!
