I have a terrible attention span. I have slightly over a thousand points of Khador, some painted, but nothing that can be cobbled together into a usable army. So - now that I'm living in the middle of nowhere, and there is lots of snow keeping me from traveling anywhere, maybe I will finally get 'er done.

The army list:

Kommandant Irusk
Devestator Heavy Warjack
Widowmakers
Greylords Ternion
Assault Kommandos (8)
MOW Demolition Corps (5)
Eyriss, Mage Hunter

I've even given myself a head start! Some of these models are painted already! Hooray. Here's the list of painted models:

Kommandant Irusk (100%)
Devestator Heavy Warjack (80%)
Widowmakers (50%)
Eyriss (100%)

The old hotness? Sorscha's box-set. Did an "alternate" scheme, but ended up looking a little like Christmas. In hind sight, the heavy reds only seem to work well on character models. On troopers, IMO, they look a little silly - especially on line troops like Winterguard. Unfortunately, I kind of went down this path with some of the already painted stuff. For example, my Kovnick (80%) is totally bright red - though I plan on making his one shoulder pad green to sync him up a bit with the army. The Widowmakers too, had a healthy amount of red, which was a little jarring. I could repaint all the already painted warjacks, but seriously, if I did that, this army would never be finished.

The plan is to mute the colours as much as possible. I'm planning on using a more earthy scheme for the trooper models. Lots of greens and browns. The Vallejo model color "yellow olive" I used on the Devestator was strangely enough, not terribly warm, being overly blue in complexion, despite advertising itself as "yellow". It does make a good basecoat. GW catachan green and a touch of camo green rounds out the greens. While I do like to highlight brown, going higher than bestial would probably begin to run the shades of browns and greens too close to one another... So, armed with this plan...

Here's the first Assault Kommando right off the painting table - he's a test case for my new "dirtier" look. Some of the Assault Kommando poses are kind of wonky looking, and you have to PIN their shields in place - which is a PITA I might add - the little blighters are growing on me. They can't hit the broadside of a barn with their shooting unless it's been immobilized or they're on a lucky streak, and their defense is kind of garbage - but they DO have SPD6, which the winterguard don't have, and they have 2 attacks and can shoot, which is more attacks than IFP (though they are admittedly inferior at being killy). I've only used the gas bombs once as well due to their pitiful RAT. Oh well. On to the pictures!

Next step... paint his seven brothers! ARGH. Realistically, maybe the army might be done by the end of April if I work at it.

Ok. As usual, things aren't going according to plan. The assault kommandos needed major work to clean up the sub-zero prime-job, so off I went to clean them up. They all have painted bases now. My greylords had languished in my to be painted pile in a very chipped prime job, so I went to clean them up as well. They also got fully painted bases. Then I got the idea that I'd rather paint something fancy other than wonky old kommandos. So, may I present, Greylord Magizev 1:

Here... have an ice cage!

I'm not sure if this works or not. The body seems almost too muted, though I don't want to overhighlight thereby making the models overly cartoony.

-Edit- I forgot to paint his eye. I'll fix that later.

Greylords Ternion complete:

Kommandant Irusk (previously painted)

Devestator Heavy Warjack (previously painted)

7 Assault Kommandos, 5 MOW Demo Corps and 2 Widowmakers to 500 points. Gotta keep plowing away. I can't quite figure out how to attach the MOW DC's arms. They are a PITA.

Widowmakers complete. The Kaptain and the fellow to the very back were already painted. Originally, the armored areas on the greatcoats were red - but I thought it would be better to limit the reds to just the shoulder pads (hidden) - so one of the grunt fellows needed some rework. The newly painted models the last week or so utilize lots of dark browns and greens with very subtle highlighting and I have not been able to properly photograph them so that the colours and contrast are correct. They look pretty bad and this is very annoying. Out of all the photos, Irusk and the Devestator are the most accurate. I might try again on a sunny day using natural light. The incandescant lighting in this house is kind of rubbish and the flourescent lamp that I paint with is overly harsh (most obvious on poor mr. Kommando).

In other news, the MOW DC have been assembled, and cold-weather primed - i.e. with the sloppiest coverage ever. I did it in the front vestibule of the house spraying out the front door because it was -25C outside. The paint didn't run too bad, and the bathroom fan took away most of the really smelly primer smell. They will need a healthy coat of black before I get to painting them. Still, I'll probably do a test case on one of those tomorrow. I'm not looking forward to finishing the Assault Kommandos.

Those greylords are really something, so dark but with that fantastic power glow. Sorscha and Irusk look great too, and the scheme works well on the 'jacks.

The photos are still turning out too washed out. The actual model is a much more matt olive green. I've tried photographing these models with maximum ambient light in the kitchen, but the incandescents don't cast enough light, and the white balance on my camera, even set to fluorescent, still washes out the yellows and leaves the paint job looking far too cold. That red Kovnik is a much richer red in actuality. This is what I get for trying to photograph at night.

I toyed with painting the MOWs in the same scheme as the Kovnik, but I figure the Kovnik can get away with being so ridiculously red, since he's a badass officer with 10 wounds and jack marshal. I think my Drakhun will also be bright red. Anyhow. I've yet to finish his base, a few details and the ice maul. I hope to be able to achieve the same glowing blue that I did on the greylords, but I'm not sure how to begin. More on this tomorrow.

The MOW, despite the simple paint scheme still took me 2 hours to get to this stage. If the greylords were any indication, the ice maul will probably take a good hour to get right, if not more. This is -fast- for me.

The power ice effects are nice. How are you finding the
kommandos? I've only played against them once.

By themselves, the Kommandos are feeble. The DEF12 just doesn't cut it. If you stack ironflesh on them, the boost to DEF15 is respectable, and if you further stack Blizzard on them from the Greylords, it boosts them to a pretty decent DEF17. Their base ARM14 isn't all that good, but it will protect them from the more common POW6 and POW7 blasts. They hit moderately well with Irusk's battle lust, but I find that every spell you can chuck on them, is better spent on the MOW DC. In fact, another 5 MOW DC are roughly the same points ad 8 assault kommandos.

That's not to say that I would be better off swapping them out, since the one advantage that the Kommandos have over the MOWs is the SPD6. Granted, IFP have SPD6 as well, and are pretty much better in every way shape and form for the sampe points cost, however, the Kommandos do not attract fire in the same way that the IFP do. As well, they are leaps and bounds more flexible than Winterguard due to SPD6 vs SPD5, even if they have to trade off from lacking the Winterguard's much higher hitting power (and UA, WA options).

I dunno. They're a mixed bag. I usually just use them as disposable bodies to tie stuff up in melee, threaten units with the possibility of doubletap and screen MOWs when possible. Works OK I guess.

In this list, the DC are the real smashers. Even the Devestator is nothing more than a big walking board control distraction - though, there's enough tricks that there's a lot of possibilities in killing the enemy warcaster as long as Eyriss isn't dead yet. Things that can threaten her, like Stormsmiths and GMCAs are high on my list of things to kill - even so far as to chuck fully boosted airbursts at them.

Sorscha is indeed all manner of hotness, and now I REALLY want one for my Sisters/IG/secret happy place. GW really needs to get off their butts and sculpt some chicks. I mean hell, how old are the Inquisitors and SoB's? Really, a few female Commisars and IG grunts would be enough for me to stop going down the path of "non-GW minis" and get me buying up some t-shirt wearing meat shields.

The blue is enchanted blue -> with ever increasing amounts of white with regal blue in the crevasses and a light wash of regal blue over where the metallic part of the gauntlet (or axe) meets the darkest part of the blue to tie it together. You could probably speed it up by using ice blue between the enchanted blue and white.

I didn't use any regal blue in the MOW DC's ice maul.

Wehrkind: This is all for you dude:

Alternate Deneghra and friends... in all her slutty glory.

The Coven. My FAVOURITE female sculpts from Privateer outside of a few in the IK line. Not even so much because of the boobage - I just love the way the legs are sculpted. The way they are standing just screams sexy. In the IK line, I'm a big fan of the Nyss Sorceress, The Satyxis Raider with sword, and the slutty dual wielding gunmage. I only own the Nyss Sorceress right now, but I will own them all one day. Oh yes.

I'll probably come back to painting Cryx once I'm done with my Khador models, or my attention runs out... which ever comes first.
