This question has come up a number of times at our local store, as to the number of challenges that can be fought in a combat. The BRB states that only one challenge at a time can happen during each combat. The issue we've had is does this mean only ever one challenge in each combat (the way we have played it) or one challenge until one is dead then another challenge can be issued (which makes sense - I am uber-killy! I challenge you , swat! ', then you ', swat! ' etc) What do you think?

Literally: it says one at a time. So RAW on that sentence, you can indeed go challenge, swat, challenge, swat, etc...

Then again, RAW is the tabletopgamer's worst nightmare, so you best look further in the context.

I've always played you can keep challenging after the last challenge is wrapped up, but can't have multiple challengs going at one time.

Same here, and it makes some sense. How cool is that?

Definitely the swat-swat-swat.

I once watched a Chaos Dwarf hero chew through a unit of grail knights, one knight at a time. "I challenge thee! I survived your charging attacks, now I stike back! No armor save, die! Now I challenge thee! Ha- no armor save! Next!"

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

Hrm, that seems a bit odd. Challenges are resolved during combat. So when you resolve your combat, it seems like it would be too late to declare any more challenges (declare at the beginning of combat) and, therefore, effectively limit you to one challenge per combat round. Additionally, it would seem to make the overkill rule for CR somewhat superfluous. (Yeah, I can only get +5 overkill, but I did it 3 times at +2, +3, and +2 so I get +6!).

I have never seen a "chain challenge".

jmurph -- No way could the overkill bonuses stack, as it's still 1 challenge per combat phase, so only one set of overkill is generated. To expand your example out correctly:

Phase 1, Challenge 1 = +2 overkill, enemy passes break @ -2 (or worse, or better, or stubborn, or whatever)
Phase 2, Challenge 2 = +3 overkill, enemy passes break @ -3 (or whatever)
Phase 3, Challenge 3 = +2 overkill, enemy fails @ -2 (or whatever) and the combat ends

Something like that anyway. Multiple challenges are declared, but only 1 a round if the last one has been concluded the round before.

jmurph- it did take several rounds. Sorry if I gave the the impression otherwise.

On a side note, when is it to late to declare a challenge.

I was playing a dwarf player the other day. Ran my guy in.
Thought about it for perhaps 20 sec and said "two attacks on this guy, two on this guy, one on unit champ, and the rest on the unit (had a dragon)"

He then said "I challenge with the unit champ"...

You challenge at the beginning of the combat. They are declared before anything else except impact hits.

But don't go trying to roll fast to avoid it. The rules clearly state both sides have the option to challenge, so you need to give people a chance to do it.

Generally I blurt out 'challenge' as soon as a unit touches me or I charge a unit (so in the movement phase) so there's no question. Plus it's funny (to me).

AH, I see what you mean. I had misread and assumed the challenges were conducted during the same combat phase! My mistake.
