We had a local RTT, and I attended. Here's how I did:

My List:

I left the crons at home and brought out my traitor legions.

Daemon Prince w/MoS, LoS, Wings (normally this guy is a khorne lord, but winning occasionally is nice)
10 Berserkers w/Rhino, 2 plasma pistols, champ w/Pfist
10 Noise Marines w/Rhino, sonic blasters
10 Plague Marines w/Rhino, 2 plasma guns, champ w/Pfist
10 Thousand sons w/Rhino, Sorc has warptime, melta bombs
10 Possessed w/Rhino, champ and Icon of Khorne
1 Obliterator
1 Obliterator
1 Obliterator

The Field:

This is team ATL's spawning ground, and non-competitive lists were thin on the ground. In particular, there's a Necron list here that may be even meaner than mine, there's the Tau list that won TFT, there's the Nidzilla list that always wins in ATL and there's that nasty drop pod SM list that Nato took to Adepticon last year.

The terrain:

Terrain is very uneven, with some boards having a lot and some having much less. They are testing next year's Exterminatus terrain, so there are a bunch of pretty cool pieces in the house for that purpose.

The organization:

Tournament takes roughly forever. Honestly guys, it shouldn't take this long, and a 4 round tourney really needs to keep to its schedule. That aside the rules judging isn't the world's best, but it doesn't really need to be, as we all play each other weekly, and have long since established how we do all the dicy situations. We are using the Adepticon FAQ this time around.

Mission 1:

Unplanned Assault (one of my favorite Adepticon missions)

Enemy list:

Necrons! (my poor Rhinos....)

Nightbringer
ROVOD Lord
11 Warriors
12 Warriors
10 Immortals
3 Destroyers
3 Destroyers
3 Destroyers
Monolith

My assessment: A somewhat schizophrenic list. With the Veil and Lith he's got assault protection...then the C'tan provides it all over again. This combines with his warriors to make roughly half of his list that doesn't shoot too hard. I think he'd be better served by dropping one of his HQ choices and getting more shooters. Also, if you bring a C'tan, never make it the NB.

The game:

For those unfamiliar with unplanned assault, it's a corners mission with escalation, but the lame FoC style of escalation rather than the book one. Escalation gives me a shot, but I totally blow it by nominating him to go first (not sure wtf I was thinking). I put the Ksons and Noise marines on the board in their rhinos and race forward, his warriors shuffle about. We ditch the rhinos before his remaining forces hit,and begin that joy of joys, a shooting war with the Necrons. As the possessed (FNP this game) are following in the Lith drops and very suddnely all the Rhinos are downed (it also kills an Oblit I'd deep struck in...with it's flux arc! There's no justice). As the NB remains conspicuous by his absence the Necrons have to evacuate their zone, with the Lith bringing the Immortals out and the warriors (shot into one unit by this time) getting veiled by the boss. I bring my Zerkers and PM's on the board to open up on the units, and the Immortals are actually in range for an asault from the Khorne forces. Too bad I get nothing done, they get warped out again.

Wow, the above paragraph is incoherent. Here's a better summary:

Chaos rushes Necrons. Necrons Veil/move/Lith out of the way and into all the quarters. Chaos chases after them while taking fire. Ultimately the game shakes out thusly:

Necrons have a Destroyer unit in one quarter, a warrior unit in another quarter and a Lith in a third quarter. Chaos has Zerkers in the Lith's quarter and Plague Marines in the warrior unit's quarter. Necron solid victory.

Remarkable happenings:

Monolith flux kills unwounded oblit
10 Berserkers assault 8 Immortals with no Res Orb nearby and knock down one.
3 Ksons (with no sorcerer left) shoot 6 immmtals and kill 2, causing them to run off the board, in the last round.
The NB shows up on turn 6.
The Possessed Champion finally makes it across the field and punches a Destroyer in the teeth, causing it's unit to flee off the board.

Despite my defeat I got the secondary objective, so this time I ended up with 10 BP.

Mission 2:

Suicide squads

Tau (Ugh! Tau beat this list by their very nature. Much hate for the space commies)

Boss w/injectors, CiB and Plasma rifle
2 battle suits w/plasma rifle/missile pod
2 battle suits w/plasma rifle/missile pod
5 stealth suits
Fish w/10 fire warriors
Fish w/10 fire warriors
Fish w/10 fire warriors
2 Piranhas
2 Piranhas
2 Piranhas
Hammerhead w/Rail gun
Hammerhead w/Rail gun
Hammerhead w/Ion gun

List assessment:

Kind of hard to mess up a Tau list. Just take lots of skimmers and you are set, and he's got that. Seems like he ought to have more crisis suits though. He's also got smart missile systems everywhere, which are excellent.

I nominate an Obliterator as my Suicide Squad, he nominates his stealth suits. While we've both chosen units likely to die, mine is much more likely to kill something.

The game:

It's a Tau vs. Assault army game, everyone knows how that goes. We chase the Tau around and they move away and blast us. There's a twist here though. I make armor saves like a fiend. Seriously, at one time I make 17 consecutive 3+ saves, fail one and then make 9 more. My attacking is only average, but my saves simply cannot fail. He misuses most of his plasma guys so he's not denying too many saves, and I'm just able to endure. 6 rounds of pain later I'm able to hold the game to a draw. He killed the Berserkers and brought the Ksons and Noise marines below half, and axed all 3 oblits. I dropped a bunch of skimmers and a crisis suit squad.

My suicide squad killed something, his didn't, both died.
We both had a unit in the other's deployment zone (he had piranhas, I had plague marines)

I got 15 BP's from this tie.

Mission 3:

Into the Night (VP game, corners, Night fight from turn 3 onward)

Tau (SOB!)

Crisis suit commander
3 teams of Crisis suits w/plasma/missile pod
4 devilfish with SMS
2 hammerheads with railguns
2 broadsides

List assessment: This is the red and black painted Tau list that everyone in ATL has seen. It wins a lot of tourneys. It's a great list.

The game:

I just can't take another F-ing Tau game. I deploy in my back corner, surrounded by Rhinos, and try and hold the game to a tie/solid loss. Due to scoring idiocy there is no way to win this game by VS, but I intend to deny him the secondary objective (killing all my Plague Marines, good luck with that) and hold him to a solid victory. I just fortress up in a corner, with the exception of my Obliterators, who stay out and fire lascannons at his hammerheads. They immobilize one on round 1, but are all killed in return. Unfortunately my dice are as cold this game as they were hot last time, and he's able to pull out the major victory by 20 points. He can't kill the Plague Marines though.

I get 5 points for this lopsided beating.

Mission 4:

Cleanse 2

The enemy list:

Chaos (Thousand sons, in particular)

Lash sorcerer
12 man Kson unit with doombolt
12 man Kson unit with doombolt
12 man Kson unit with doombolt
6 man havoc unit with 2 lascannons and 2 missile launchers
6 man havoc unit with 2 lascannons and 2 missile launchers
3 obliterators
6 terminators w/Mark of Slaanesh and lightning claws

List assessment:

He's got pretty much the bare minimum in terms of both mobility and anti tank. In return for this he's got lots of anti-marine killing power. I don't like the list much, figure it'll take a thrashing from anything competitive.

The game:

He gets first turn and pops 2 rhinos, and that's pretty much the last thing that goes right for him all game. I drive the remaining rhinos up and smoke, and he's got no way to do anything. The prince kills a unit, my Ksons kill his with abandon, the possessed hit his firebase and go nuts. Basically the game revolves around his inability to get value from his Kson units (as well as the inexplicable decision to deep strike the Obliterator unit). I wipe him out, full points.

And that's the tourney. The world's meanest Necron army wins first prize, the Tau take best general, the crons I faced in round 1 get best painted.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Well, post some pics of this Best Painted army!

Great report, by the way.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

Grats on Best Painted, but echo Iorek on needing pics

I like your list a lot, way to be on the 10-strong squads, the possessed, the rhinos, the loner oblits, the no blastmasters, but primarily on taking the whole pantheon of marks. Pity you didn't get to kick more butt, but 2x Tau will do that I suppose

What'd the lash prince do for you?

I'm building Chaos as well. I wondered why the minimum number of Obliterators?

Tau, Eldar, Necron and Nidzilla. The big four. Ouch.

Did you try to Deepstrike your Obliterators to get first shot/flank shot on the Tau?

To clarify: I didn't get Best Painted, it was my first round opponent that did. He had lots of cool conversions, Necrons in various states of self repair, on fire, crackling with lightning like in DoW, etc. I didn't take any pictures though.

Boss_Salvage:

Thanks! I'm fond of the list, it isn't the most competitive thing in the world, but it's a fun list that does alright. I really like the uniqueness of each of the units, and it generally leaves me with the right unit for any given situation (although frequently in the wrong position).

I feel you on the 2x Tau hate. Man, that's a rough matchup.

In game 1 the Lash Prince could have turned the whole thing. But he rolled an 11 to lash and was promptly gunned down.
In game 2 the Lash Prince moved the enemy Stealth Suits into position to get charged by my khornate possessed, which prevented him from killing anything with his suicide squad, and thus cost him 5 BP's. Then the DP was gunned down.
In game 3 the Lash Prince jumped out of the bunker to take a stab at his biggest point cost unit (which was my secondary), but they moved 1" less than they needed to for his charge. Then he got gunned down.
In game 4 the Lash Prince lashed a 12 man thousand son unit off to the side and killed it (over the course of many rounds), then got gunned down.

I think I'd have been better off with a Nurgle lord on a bike with a fist in each of these games, but who could have forseen it? I definitely think if you are relying on Lash it has to be a Sorcerer doing it, as the DP gets shot down alot.

mikeguth: I didn't take more Obliterators because the theme of the army was rhino borne squads. I wouldn't have brought even the few I did bring, except that I desperately need long range anti-tank.

Against the Tau I didn't deep strike because once they get moving you can only glance, and I wanted lascannon shots before they got off the ground. That worked in the second tau game, but in the first he got first turn.

Would the Tau army that swamped you be anywhere that I could find? I'm really interested to see his paint scheme as mine is Scab Red and Chaos Black, with a little Ice Blue here and there.

It's too bad things didn't turn out for you so well, but it sounds like you must've had some fun. Gratz on the domination of the TS list though, atleast you weren't the worst.
