So after months of preparation and list refining I finally won a best general award. It was for a small tournament of only 20 people but it was still sweet.

Now in general there was very little terrain in the tournament. Seriously, in some cases there was more terrain on the fantasy tables than the 40k ones. The moment I stepped into the hall and saw the tables thought my running assault army was sunk for sure.


My first game was against a really tooled out Imperial Guard unit with Deamon Hunter allies.

5 Grey knight terminators (I lost the last page of his list so I am uncertain what they were equipped with.)


This thing was plasma death. I think it lacked long range anti tank, but I was not playing Tau today. With almost no chance of cover saves I did not think much of my chances.

During deployment we both set up directly across from each other. His only deployment to the far side of the board was his Bassie.

I win first turn and take it.

My Turn 1

Everything moves up into the open board and stops about 12-15 inches away from his troops. My fexs manage to only stun one demolisher and my Wing Rant kills 3 of the Lords warriors.

His turn 1

Well he advances everything to just within 12 inches and opens up. I have been playing variants of this list for months now, probably over 50 games. I have never ever lost so much to one turn of shooting, even when I was running without carapace! I lost 29 stealers almost all to plasma. For reasons unkown he choose not to target my wing rant which I found very strange.

The only unit which did not shoot, besides one demolisher, was his lord who charged against 3 of my stealers which I also found a bit strange.

HtH ended up in a draw.

My Turn 2.

Well that went badly, I decided that I needed to take out the Grey knight termies whom had taken a screening position in front of the rest of his army.

Fex shooting took out one demolisher and striped the cannon of another.

I fired my Rant at the knights because I wanted him to charge them, the worms failed to cause a casualty.

I then charged the Knights with 7 stealers, 1 ravener and my wing rant. Another ravener went for a grenadier squad and my last ravener went for the Inq lord.

Good rolls wiped out the knights and all hth units where able to consolidate into enemy units. My Ravener broke a squad of grenadiers but could only consolidate into open terrain.

HtH with the Inq lord was inconclusive, I think I did a wound to him and he may have taken down 1 stealer.

His Turn 2

Having nothing to shoot at but my fex’s his Demolisher fired las plas and his bassie a plate, he did 2 wounds to one fex. his other units where tied up in HtH. He chose to assault my Rant with this heroic officer.

HtH went well for me. I lost only 1 or two stealers and killed many guard, troopers. His officer did 2 wounds to my rant with his P fist but his squad broke and he ran and did not recover.

Turns 3-6
It was basically over after this. My stealers and ravener killed his Inq lord, my fexes finished off the remaining Demolisher and my HTH units killed everything else. In the end He had only his demolisher left. I had a full scoring unit of stealers (4) 2 ½ units of stealers (1 each) 1 ravener and all my MC’s. Squeaking out a Crushing victory.

Next fight Ultra marines.

Not even a "way to go on your first best general!" ?

Nothings wrong with the report. I think you did pretty well. Not sure why this guy didn't shoot at you more instead of running into HtH right away.

My opponent did not charge into HtH with anything other than his Inq lord and retinue. The rest he moved up into rapid shot range and unloaded. What confused me the most was why he did not paste my Wing Rant turn 1. (Though that would have left me about 4-5 more stealers on my turn.)

Very nice. Agree that he didn't seem to grasp how to deal with your army but still a nice win without terrain.

BTW, if you are in Red Deer, are you by chance planning to attend any Astronomicon tournaments?

Yes my opponent was slightly confused by a non swarm non Zilla nids list. The real thing that worked in my favor was that I got first turn in all 3 of my matches. First turn with Stealer shock is like pressing the win button. I only think I ever lost 1 game with me going first turn with this list. If my opponent could kill even 3-6 or so more stealers I would have not had enough for assault and would have lost badly.

I'm based in Edmonton. I had to travel over a hundred miles just to find a tourny small enough to win at.. Lol.

I dont pay attention to Astronomicon.

My next trouney is an unofficial one in may.

Nice batrep. I like your list btw and have run something similiar in the past. 3 Gunfexes seem the best bet anymore with all the skimmers flying around. Nice to not see a cookie cutter nidzilla.

What are you talking about HB? That list is a zilla and marine killer. The twin demolishers are a bit of a sink, but otherwise I see min maxed plasma death!

All the plasma pistols and power weapons are a waste of points, big time. They seem like the reason he ran forward with his whole army instead of forcing you to come after him. each one of those grenadier units cost about twice as much as it needed to. Plasma pistols are essentially one shot weapons for guardsmen. I use them on storm trooper vet sarges, but only in moderation.

Well, the Vancouver Astro was alot of fun last year. Was just curious cause there were a few attendees last year from the Edmonton area. Would be interesting if two stealer shock lists showed up this year

HBMC and Samwise are right. That was an awful IG list. It only looks like minmaxing because of the low bodies-to-plasma ratio, but the truth is one could easily have included both more bodies and more plasma (plus heavies) by using hardened vets and normal squads instead.

So just out of curiosity, why don't you run Extended Carapace on the Carnifexes? I see those VC/BS 'Fexes a lot, but I'm not sure I've ever seen them without the 2+ save.

And was this a 1700 point tournament? That seems like an odd number.

Anyway, grats on your win. I assume the rest of your battle reports consist of "Scout the Stealers, get first turn, move, fleet, do some shooting, turn 2 kill his army" more or less? I like the list, but why only best general? Did someone else get higher battle points, or was it soft scores that made the difference? What got best overall?

Most of the stuff in a competitive list that can hurt a fex is already AP1 or 2, so the extended carapace isn't all that useful.

1700pts is tourney standard here in Canada. Why it is diffrent from the U.S. I have no idea.

I did post my second battle here, it was against space marines. . My last one was a very close battle with Orcs, I lost all my notes on that fight so I did not post a report.

Best over all went to a really really well painted Nurgle army.

My interpersonal skills are not the best, My painting is decent but not in the upper 25% so soft scores hurt me.

As for 2+ saves on the fexs, I would much rather have more stealers. In all the 40+ games I have played with this list I have lost a fex maybe a hand full of times and only once had all my fex's wiped out. Basicly everyone is so busy shooting at my stealers they rarely have time to point guns at my Fex's.

For the record Stealer shock is highly effective but not IMO as good allround as Nid Zilla. It is however alot more fun to play.

How many people? And it is a shock that your list has only now recieved best general. A bit OTT IMO, especially if all the competitors matched that guard player.
