Hey all, I was just digging around through old magazine and other mess, and happened across the Eye of Terror codex. I started flipping of course, and became reaquainted with the Lost Company of Space Wolves, and was wondering if anyone here has had luck with that army list, after digging through some older white dwarf issues, and assessing my assortment of figures, if I added 5 Wulfen, I could actually do the 2000pt army they list in the mag. The issue the army list is in is #291, Apr 2004 if anyone wants to see it, but their army lists always seem to lack some competitiveness, so again, I ask:

Has anyone had good luck building and playing this army?

Are the current Space Wolves better, or rather, better in the game?

Is the 13th Co. a waste of time/effort/money and why?

Thanks all!

i really like the 13th co.

i played space wolves for a number of years and changed over to trait marines... before i knew about 13th co.

but ive made a few "count as " armys and they were SUPER fun to play .... even though i lost about every game.....

as far as reg space wolves being better or not i think that depends on your play style, but imho regular space wolves are more competitive and 13th co is more fun

Wulfen FTW !!!! lol

I have a buddy that has a 13th Co army. It's pretty fast and very in your face. He uses lots of wolves as cheap fast tie-up units and follows them up with large squads of wulfen fleeting behind. The bike lord is a real beast, very nasty in combat, and easily matches the speed of the rest of the army. Long fangs with meltaguns teleport around with the runepriest for support/hard targets (I think that's what it is...been a while since he's used them). The way he runs it would decimate other infantry lists, but against skimmers, not so much. Although Wulfen are nasty nasty.

My brother plays 13 co. Think of it as an all infantry SW army with a few tricks up its sleeve. Very all or nothing play style.

Fenrisian Wolves are crazy good. 10 points for a hormogaunt with S4, T4, counter charge and scouts. Nuf said.

They also make up for the extremely expensive troops the army has.

Longfangs are overcosted devastators without ablative wounds. Bleach. Still, three squads are almost mandatory because they're the only way to get long range/antitank firepower.

Not much choice for your list. 1 troops choice, 1 worthwhile elite, 1 worthwhile fast attack. 1 heavy support choice. The only thing that isn't predetermined is the HQ. It would be the same as all the other 13th co.s around, except there aren't any, so knock yourself out. You can't be cookie cutter if you're the only cookie.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism." -Hermann Goering (high ranking Nazi)

Ok, so I put a 750pt 13th Co. list together for review/assistance.

Wolf Priest-96pts. w/ Wolf Tail Talisman
x5 Wulfen-120pts.
x10 Grey Slayers-241pts. w/ Pack Leader w/powerfist, x1 Flamer.
x8 Grey Slayers-203pts. w/ Pack Leader w/ powerfist, x1 Meltagun.
x3 Long Fangs- 94pts. w/ x2 Missle Launchers.

Its funny, there isnt much to the actual army list, and that's pretty well reflected here, haha. It's low points, but ya gotta start somewhere....

anyone have anything?

Thanks!

I made a 13th Company and used my standard wolves as them. Thrashed the opponent. I teleported a squad of Storm Claws up there first turn and took the objective. All the guys up the front of their army got surrounded and got obliterated from both sides.

Unfortunately didnt have any wulfen or fenrisian wolves so i didnt get to find out their strong points. I say go for it.

Oh and is it still possible to buy box sets of 13th Co. or are they basically conversion only now?

This army has a lot of potential.
It doesnt have a lot of choices, which can be such a double edged sword. Good thing, it limits what's needed to purchase/convert for starters. Bad thing, you've got to make sure you're equipped well enough to handle most threats. (Also total lack of armor, even in dreadnought form). It's a tough choice, between this army, and codex Space Wolves.

Ive already set to rig up a second logan grimnar with new chaos terminator lord lightning claws to use as a 13th Co. Wolf Lord., I have the 2003 Games Day Wolf Priest, and the newest Rune Priest.
Im pretty sure I can rig up 20 Grey Slayers, at least 10 Storm Claws and I believe 2 squads of Long Fangs with Missle Launchers, Heavy Bolters and Lascannons (2x ML + 2x LasCannon, 2x HvyBltr + 2x ML). I suppose the army is pretty straight forward, but I was looking for any other input anyone might have towards this force. I dont have a lot of time to mess with conversions and painting (work and a baby on the way, w00t), so I want to make sure that this is a project that is not only worth the time, but something that CAN actually win on the table top.

Any feedback would rock.
Thanks!

So, Im a little disappointed here....I thought there'd be a few more folks about who've used this force...

As an aside, can anyone tell me why in the Space Wolf codex that they say " 1 HQ per 750pts" but later show that they're building a list towards 2000pts and it says something like "so we have 3 HQs ready here" My math isnt the best, but 750 x 3 = 2250, not 2000. Is there something I missed? I dont think so, because they also did it in the 13th Co. Vs. SoB battle way back when. 3 HQs in a 2000pt battle. What the heck am I missing here??

thanks...

The House that Peterbilt

I was all fired up to do a 13th company when they came out but never did. I'd hesitate to do one now cause they will likely go away once the new Space Wolves dex is released.

Here's some basic info:

1) Very terrain and matchup dependant. If you play on planet bowling ball you won't do well. If you play against skimmer heavy army you will lose. Lotsa tanks, you will probably have a hard time as well.

2) As already stated, fenrisian wolves are the best unit in the list (and rate high in the whole game IMHO). Take as many as you can (points or comp permitting).

3) The long fangs are over-costed. Even the afore-mentioned teleporting 4 meltagun squad (just teleport reguker grey slayers and give the rune presit a combi-melta).

You can't make up for the anti-tank deficiency with a subpar unit. Taking 3 long fangs leaves almost no points for any of the good stuff and I strongly disagree with that advice. Just give every squad that can take them MGs and powerfists, be sure to have a Rune priest in larger games and pray for favorable matchups.

4) Wulfen should be in largish squads and you should not take one without a wolf priest. I'd give him the narthecium thing too cause you are bound to take enough shooting casualties to pay for it.

Taking more as troops using the wolf lord with mark rule is also an option but I personally wouldn't do it. Infact I think wulfen are slightly over-rated, with Storm Claws being a much more effective elite choice. they are cool models/concept though

5) Mark of the Wulfen should be taken as much as possible. It really adds to the killing ability of the few squads you'll have. Deffinitely give it to the wolf lord, turns him into a killing machine.

6) A nice setup for the rune priest is a combi-melta, frost sword and crow thingie. That way he doesn't lose attacks for taking the melta and can help the teleporting squad take out the tank/mc. Taking termie armor isn't bad either, that way all 3 HQs have an inv save.

About your questions:
"Are the current Space Wolves better, or rather, better in the game?"
I don't think so overall but the lower cost of the SW stuff, specifically blood claws, makes the SW a bit more forgiving I think. Access to drop pods is another thing to consider.

"Is the 13th Co. a waste of time/effort/money and why?"
As I mentioned, they may very well be going away soon. You'd be able to use most if not all the models somehow but the flavor of the army is likely to be gone.

"and I believe 2 squads of Long Fangs with Missle Launchers, Heavy Bolters and Lascannons (2x ML + 2x LasCannon, 2x HvyBltr + 2x ML). "
If you are going to take Long fangs, please don't bother with heavy bolters. To save points you could take something like 2 lascannons and 2 plasmaguns or 2 lascanons and 2 ML but there's no reason to take heavy bolters. You don't need them.

"As an aside, can anyone tell me why in the Space Wolf codex that they say " 1 HQ per 750pts" but later show that they're building a list towards 2000pts and it says something like "so we have 3 HQs ready here" My math isnt the best, but 750 x 3 = 2250, not 2000. Is there something I missed?"
You need 1 HQ for every block of 750 points. If you happen to play 751 points you'd need 2 HQs. 1500 you still need 2. Go to 1501-2250 and you'd need 3 HQs. You also can't go above 2250 points with 13th company without a 2nd FOC becuase you can't take more then one of each and there's no Wolf Guard leader option.

Hope that helps and hopefully someone will chime in with some experience. I know Green Blow Fly used to run them.

snoogums: "Just because something is not relavant doesn't mean it goes away completely."

Iorek: "Snoogums, you're right. Your arguments are irrelevant, and they sure as heck aren't going away."
