Hi all, last time I played fantasy was in 4th and 5th edition, though I am still somewhat familier with 6th/7th as I ocassionlly tired to keep up to date even though I wasn't playing.

Now going to play in a map based league with dwarfs(easiest to re-enter as my other fully painted army is Dark Elves and I need to get back into the swing of things before I go with a finesse army again).

Basic lists are 1500 points with ocassional 100 - 200 point add ons based on map stuff. Half of the players in the league are newbies just beginning the hobby, the other half are fairly experienced and can make some nasty lists. Here is the list I threw together, if anyone could help spot some weaknesses or point out tactics that could improve it I would be grateful. In addition to the units listed below I also have a Gyrocopter, 3 + cannons, an organ gun, a unit of 16 hammerers, 2 * 10 handgunners, 10 xbow, Anvil of Doom, 20 warriors, 10 miners, 18 slayers including some of the big ones and a smattering of longbeards and special characters like felix and gotrek, bugman, the white dwarf and some others that are engineers and runesmiths.

Runesmith with dispel scroll
Thane with battle standard (banner of +2 to dispell rolls)
M whatshisname and the Goblin Hewer
20 dwarfs all command
15 Iron Breakers all command
10 Miners all command
10 warriors upgraded to rangers all command
10 xbow musician w shield
10 handgunners
2 bolt throwers, both w engineer, one with rune of +1 str

Right now I plan to use another unit of thunderers or a unit of hammerers as my bonus unit depending on whether it can be a core or special choice.

I am also a little frustrated with deployment ... Having 3 shooty units and three war machines is leaving me a little uncertain of how to best deploy and get the most out of that shooting.

Thanks in advance,

Meph

Base of the list looks allright, altough I'd certainly do some changes.

Firstly about the character equipment: The bsb has to drop that silly banner. It's expensive and certainly not needed in sub-2k games as you won't face that much magic (and being a dwarf you have those 2 extra dispel dice already). I'd invest to his survivability or in combat boosting banners instead. For example a thane bsb with this setup: Armor with Rune of Resistance and Master Rune of Gromril and an axe with Rune of Cleaving seems good especially when his your only "fighting" character as such. dwarf stats, 1+ rerollable save and 3 str 5 attacks means that he can take pretty much any opposing hero level character head on. The runesmith also needs some fighting equipment so I'd give him a shield and a great weapon and maybe an extra dispel scroll rune. One good rune in the dwarf book is the master rune of challenge and you can give the runesmith that so he can draw some knights or such to attack your durable fighting units instead of warmachines for example. I'd run with this kind of runesmith: Great weapon, Shield, Armor with Rune of Stone,Talisman with Rune of Spellbreaking and Master Rune of Challenge.

Secondly about the troops: If you need points for stuff, the champion upgrades are things you can drop. Especially on normal warriors that extra s3 attack isn't gonna cut it especially if you're not running a character in there. It's very advisable to take shields to the thunderers too as this way dwarf missile units can have a good 4+ save in close combat (and it helps against shooting too). I'm not too impressed about the rangers especially when you don't have anvil. I'd just take regular quarrelers with shields instead to save up points. Also, if you're running one solo "elite" fighting unit, the hammerers are the best choice especially with bsb as they make the greatest anvil unit due to stubborness. Get them shields, though.

The Issue with line of sight is a common problem in shooty armies. You just have to deal with the fact that not every 30 dwarfs + machines is able to shoot all the time but it's good to realize that this is not the end of the world. Use hills if you happen to have them in the deployment zone and you don't necessarily need to castle up vs every army. It's also not a bad idea to deploy in 2 ranks now and then with the shooters (you get +1 combat res that way).

Thanks for the suggestions!

I had a chance to try this out against an orc and gobbo army and I totally see your point about making the heros more killy and survivable. I didnt need that silly banner at all, even with him having 2 level 2 shamen.

I also found that the 5+ save on the miners got them killed real fast before they could strike.

For my next battle I have updated my characters with the item combos you suggested ... to be honest I was a bit overwhelmed when looking at all the combos possible and chose without really considering their real effect on the game.

I also dropped the miners(which is too bad as they are wonderful models .. maybe I'll throw them in when I get bonus specials) and replaced them with 15 hammerers with a standard with rune of Stoicism and put the battle banner on the iron breakers ... so they each should get an extra +1 in combat against most opponents. The points gained by dropping champions really made the difference when 10 miners become 15 hammerers!

I did have shields on the thunderers, I just forgot to list it. I tried reading other dwarfish posts and saw that is one of the suggestions that came up often.

Anyway, thanks again. I'll give this build a try and see where it gets me.

Personnally, I'm a big fan of getting everything out of your combat res, so making your blocks 20+ would be my advice. The point of miners is having them charging, so dying before they could deliver a hit shouldn't be an issue. Still, if it fits your style better, go with it. I have no idea how the goblinhewer works (shame on me) to make a fair judgement about it.

All in all not bad, though. Dwarf Power!

Vidar: I do intend to use the miners in bigger games, but for now I think I will go with the hammerers as they have a better armor save and can get stubborn. The hewer is pretty cool IMO, 48" range, d3 hits per rank, str 4, -2 save, plus comes with a hero with a repeating dwarf handgun with 3 shots + great weapon.

Thanks,

Meph

I definitly want myself a Hewer! Are those legal? And you're right bout the miners, I'm just not familiar with 1500 points. We do 500, 1000, 2000, etc..., where I would use them in 2000+, but not in 1000-

The hewer is a DoW Regiment of Renown (of sorts) from the SoC, and only dwarfs or empire can wield it iirc. It's not broken or anything so you should be able to use it in friendly games without problems. The gobbo hewer's usage on tournaments depends on the organizers, though.

Got a chance to test this list again . . . this time against a fast chaos list. Thanks for the feedback ... I think this is a pretty solid list for the points values I will be playing against.

Aside from some terrible rolling on my part ... only hit twice with my hits on 3+ bolt throwers the whole game, and had all three (ALL THREE) of my blocks of infantry(20 dwarfs + BSB, 15 Hammerers, and 15 Iron Breakers) run from fear/terror, and panic tests from another unit getting broken in HTH. All in turn 2 and 3. I still ended the game with more points than the chaos player thanks to some late game comback shooting from my x-bow and handgunners.

Two things I encountered:

1: Super fast lists really throw me ... he used fury's, flying Demon hero who avoided combat and jumped around my units hooting them with a template weapon, chariot, maurader cav and chaos knight cav. These really threw me and with my limited number of regiments, the DP jumping right behind me (damn the lack of accuracy on the bolt throwers!) put my tactics out the window. It also made me completly forget about the master rune of challenge(my fault entirely) that could have helped me mess with his plans and gain the upper hand with a side charge on those pesky chaos knights.

Any suggestions on how to deploy when facing a mostly fast army with flyers? I considered holding the board edge so they can't get behind me at all and can only get to the side of one end of my line, but this gives me no chance at all to rally if anyone breaks do to an unlucky 10+ roll (a 1/4 chance for every unit when the terror causer jumps in your face).

2: A question about the goblin hewer. If a weapon says it does d3 hits per rank do I roll the number of hits, then roll to hit for each "hit" scored, OR do I roll once to see if I hit and then roll to the number of hits and roll that many times to wound?

My opponent believed it was the former so we did that for the game we played, but I can't seem to find this mechanic in the rule book. If anyone can point out where it details this type of attack I would greatly appreciate it.

If it says it does d3 per rank, you have to roll the d3 to see how many hits.

Much like the 2D6 hits of a magic missile spell? Or is it worded differently?

Shoot I've seem to have misplaced his rules. Were they not available via download like the rest of the Dogs of War, or through the lustria site? I can't seem to find them now. The lustria site just redirects to the main UK page.

The rules were in the SoC-armylist pdf's and in the Storm of Chaos supplement. Unless you or any of your friends has those around, If you want, I can send you the file via e-mail if you pm me your address.

"When it fires, nominate a target unit within range and Line of Sight and roll to hit as normal (using Malakai's BS if he is still alive and not firing his repeating handgun). The spinning axe blades inflict a variable number of hits depending on the number of ranks in the target unit. Roll a d3 for every rank the target has, this is the total number of rolls to Wound you should make."

You were right with the second one - roll once to see if you hit and roll to the number of hits and then roll that many times to wound.

and the rules for it are here in case anyone can't find them - http://us.games-workshop.com/games/warhammer/stormofchaos/gaming/rules/assets/SoC_slayerarmy.pdf

Thanks slayer and chaoslord for the pointers to the rule supplement. I'm going to save it this time on my computer instead of depending on the site and memory. haha.

Thanks for the replys and thanks Slayer for the link. I saw it in army builder but couldn't find the rules in any of the dogs of war stuff. I have only been playing friendly games so it wasn't a big deal not having the full rules, but I am glad to have it right now.

The way it works is actually better than what I have been doing ... since I was rolling to hit for each wound with the crews BS of 3, it didn't do too much. Always glad I didn't misinterpret in my faver.

I may end up swithcing it for an organ gun though ... facing tough things that arnt in ranks really made it not do very much. The organ gun could have really changed things ... on the other hand I just love the hewer model ... awww I love this game.

Thanks much.

Thanks Joe! I lurk alot and I used to post a bunch on eldar tactics and warmachine before the update to the new format ... then I just never quite got around to fishing out my password.

Sorry Arion, we are just a little north in Endzone Games in Clearfield. We also just started a campaign this last week, meets on wednesdays but plays anytime each week. So unless its connected and I don't know about it I thnk ours is seperate. I get my games in up here on Saturdays and weekdays conflict with work.

A few of us make it down there ocasionally for tournaments, mostly for 40K though. Krom&Krog, Lemartes and I were down there not too long ago for the 40k tourny(run by Stelek). Krom&krog won it with his orcs, I played the pink and black Emp Children Chaos.

Do they do fantasy tourneys down there often? We might cross paths eventually if they do.

they are running an "Ard Boyz Primer on the 5th of this mont, the only store in the state to do that. I woun't be able to be there unforunatly. I will try to keep you posted on fantasy tournaments they run. ffanstasy is picking up pace. we have 13 players in our campaign, and about half are newbies, that is why I thought it was the same.

No prob! We have about 32 players , also about half newbs (including myself as I have not played fantasy for about the last 2 editons). I think that number will drop once we see who can really make it and who can't though.

Nice about the primer, I'm just re-starting and I may have 3500 points of dwarves, but I don't have the experience to wield them yet ... I'm still getting back in and re-learning everythign that has changed since I last played. Plus I like to play with everythign painted, and I only have about 1500 - 2000 points painted now.

Good luck in your campaign!
