I've been interested in Imperial Guard for a while now, the whole feel of the army and the fluffiness of it really appealed to me. So with my Tau being completed and DE on hiatus until a new codex comes out, here's my first ever attempt at an IG list:

Doctrines: Iron Discipline

HQ
1) Command Squad (50)
- Junior Officer: Carapace Armour, Iron Discipline
- 4x Guardsmen

ELITE
1) 5x Veterans (60)
- 1x Missile Launcher

TROOPS
1) Platoon A
Command Squad: Junior Officer w/ Iron Discipline, 4x Guardsmen (45)
-10x Guardsmen w/ Autocannon (75)
-10x Guardsmen w/ Autocannon (75)
-10x Guardsmen w/ Autocannon (75)
- 5x Guardsmen w/ Plasma Gun (40)
2) Platoon B
Command Squad: Junior Officer w/ Iron Discipline, 4x Guardsmen (45)
- 10x Guardsmen w/ Missile Launcher (75)
- 10x Guardsmen w/ Missile Launcher (75)
- 10x Guardsmen w/ Missile Launcher (75)
- 5x Guardsmen w/ Plasma Gun (40)

HEAVY SUPPORT
1) Leman Russ (160)
- 3x Heavy Bolters, Extra Armour
2) Basilisk (110)
- Hunter Killer Missile

Thanks =)

For starters, do NOT take a basilisk unless you are going to give it indirect fire. THe hunter killer is a horrible wast of points. It should be hidden all the time anyways so it should never have line of site.

are you taking the vets just for the ML? Bad idea. There are two good uses of vets the first being better or more common than the ladder.

First Drop in suicide squad
Give em 3 melta guns if you want them as tank busters, also awsome against obliterator squads, or 3 plasma guns and a plasma pistol for MEQ killers.

Assualt vets. Two assault vet squads with 3 meltas and a plasma pistol, when the sgt has a power fist can out assault a marine squad easily. Especially if they are hardened fighters with close order and carapace while expensive ONLY pays off in this scenario. I put them in CHimeras.

The more common is the first one.

PS as an alternate you can use them as a fire base, but ONE ML will not do it. For example, 1 HB, 3 GL and a storm bolter can be rather nasty.

Or a LC, 3 Plasma guns can also wreak havoc.

you infantry squads should all have a special weapon (plasma) as well as heavy weapon, just as a rule of thumb. to optimize them take more good guns. also the vets as said above should be given three special weapon as said above just because that's what they are for, having lots of really cool toys to play with. there really is no other point in taking them other than that.

my last thing to do would be drop the two 5 man units with the plasmagun and upgrade the basilisk to a second leman russ because sitting out there all alone that leman russ will get destroyed by turn 2 at latest

Round 2:

HQ
1) Command Squad (50)
- Junior Officer: Carapace Armour + Iron Discipline
- 4x Guardsmen

TROOPS
1) Platoon A
Command Squad: Junior Officer w/ Iron Discipline, 4x Guardsmen (45)
-10x Guardsmen w/ Autocannon + Cameleoline (85)
-10x Guardsmen w/ Autocannon + Cameleoline (85)
-10x Guardsmen w/ Autocannon + Cameleoline (85)

2) Platoon B
Command Squad: Junior Officer w/ Iron Discipline, 4x Guardsmen (45)
- 10x Guardsmen w/ Lascannon + Cameleoline (95)
- 10x Guardsmen w/ Lascannon + Cameleoline (95)
- 10x Guardsmen w/ Lascannon + Cameleoline (95)

HEAVY SUPPORT
1) Leman Russ (160)
- 3x Heavy Bolters, Extra Armour
2) Leman Russ (160)
- 3x Heavy Bolters, Extra Armour

Should I be taking Cameleoline or inserting 6 plasma rifles in there? The only thing stopping me from that is the fact that I'd have to buy all those special weapon blisters. Is there a cheap way of converting plasma rifles? I'm thinking of using Necron gun rods, which my friend might have spares of.

there are numerous stores online you can get individual bits from. Just look up Marine bits and buy plasma rifles.

you should be putting 6 plasmaguns i there first. make sure you have enough special and heavy weapons before you worry about doctrines.
