*Edit: Revised list in the second post. Now with nearly zero magic!*

The weekend after Adepticon is the 'ard boyz tournament. Unfortunately, my Daemonic Legion (Storm of Chaos style) isn't legal for this tournament, and I lack too many other models. So, Hordes of Chaos-based Daemons it must be.

Here're my thoughts:

Characters:
Daemon Prince: MoS, Lvl 4, Blade of Ether, Soul Hunger, Diabolic Splendor
Pretty standard, though only a 5+ Ward instead of the 4+ I've grown to know and love.

Exalted Sorceror: MoS, Lvl 4, Daemon Sword, Chaos Steed
More magic. The Daemon Sword is far from a requirement, but I've always found it amusing. Goes in Chosen Knights.

Exalted Champion: MoS, BSB, stuff?, in a Chariot
I haven't done a mortal hero in a while. He's going in the chariot largely because I've already put together my Herald-in-chariot, and plan on using the same model.

Sorceror: Lvl 2, MoS, 2x Dispel Scroll

Sorceror: Lvl 2, MoS, Power Familiar(?)
I know I want/need these guys to bump up the lovely Slaaneshi magic. I don't know exactly how I'll want to equip them, or where to put them to keep them out of trouble.

Core:
12x Daemonettes

12x Daemonettes

12x Daemonettes

6x Mounted Daemonettes

6x Mounted Daemonettes

6x Furies (maybe)

Special:
4x Chaos Ogres w/Great Weapons, musician
Need a hammer.

6x Chosen Knights of Slaanesh: FC, Rapturous Standard
Really big hammer

6x Maurader Horsemen: Flails, Musician
Fast Cav, but can flee.

Rare:
2x Chaos Spawn (Fiends of Slaanesh)
These are just plain great

It's on the order of 3500 pts, runs about 14 power dice & 8 dispel dice. No large foot blocks, pretty good mobility, and a couple decent hammers to take advantage of flanking by the mounted daemonettes.

Thoughts?

I've revised my plans rather significantly, particularly in view of the first round of the 'ard boyz (miscast on double 1's, 2's, AND 3's, irresistable force on double 4's, 5's, and 6's). And magic is always pretty iffy (unless you're VC). So, trying it this way:

Heroes:
Daemon Prince of Slaanesh (Ether Blade, Soul Hunger, Diabolic Splendor) [General]

Chaos Lord: MoS, Chaos Steed, Rending Sword, Enchanted Shield, Bindings of Slaanesh

Aspiring Champ: MoS, BSB, War Banner, Chaos Steed

Chaos Sorceror: Lvl 1, MoS, Chaos Steed, Dispel Scroll x2

Beast Shaman: Lvl 1, Dispell Scroll x2

Core:
12x Daemonettes

20x Daemonettes

6x Mounted Daemonettes

6x Mounted Daemonettes

6x Mounted Daemonettes

Special:
4x Chaos Ogres: Great Weapons, Musician

5x Chosen Knights of Slaanesh: FC, Rapturous Standard

Chariot: MoS

Chariot: MoS

5x Marauder Horsemen: Musician, Flails

Rare:
5x Fiends of Slaanesh

4 casting dice, 4 dispel dice, 4 scrolls

The Daemon Prince starts in the big units of Daemonettes (sharing his Daemonic Splendor, and hiding from cannons), with the ability to charge out on turn 2 to visit warmachines and spread Terror. He's also solid against heavily-armored units like Knights.

The Chaos Lord has a very specific role: he's for assassinating wizards. The bindings let me pull any character into a challenge, and very few wizads are likely to hurt him at all.

The Beast Shaman can just wander around and hide; his scrolls get used up first. He probably get Fire magic, just for the very slight chance of getting off a magic missile now and again. The Chaos Sorceror hangs out with the Chosen most of the time, but is mobile enough to split off elsewhere.

A whole wave of fast-moving, unbreakable spawn can make up a whole flank, or I can spread them around to protect myself from march-blockers of various types.

Marauder horsemen give me some bait-and-flee ability; the ogres can be used for this, too (carefully). Lots of fast-moving fear, and the mounted daemonettes are actually pretty solid against most targets.

My major hammer is the Chosen, of course, and they're likely to draw a lot of fire. I can screen with Mounted Daemonettes and/or Marauder Cav, and run parallel with the Ogres. The Rapturous Standard is a great toy, and will even knock those WS7 zombies back down to being hit on 3s, if it comes to that (hopefully it won't - I lack the dispel power to get bogged down in giant fights with ever-regenerating hordes).

So, what do you think? It's got speed, and hits decently hard. No shooting, not a lot of static combat rez, and essentially no magic; I'm spending less than 300 pts on magic defense, so in non-magic encounters I don't give up quite as much.

In the interests of completeness....

I took the 2nd list to my local 'ard boyz (where a whole 3 people showed up, including myself). I played against both other armies (Skaven and Grimgor-led Orcs), and ripped them up. Terror was significant in both games, but the MVP goes to the many Spawn running around. They do wonders at holding big squads of Black Orcs w/Grimgor in place for an extra turn, or for locking down squads of Plague Monks. Pricey - at 375 pts for 5, I could run a Giant, or a Shaggoth, or some Trolls for markedly less - but versatile. Also, it lets me deploy 5 spawn for my first 5 deployments, denying my opponent any useful information while he deploys.

Not sure what conclusions to reach - neither of my opponents were fielding especially maxed-out lists, and the Skaven player made some serious deployment blunders. But I got to play, and I can go to the regional in May if I want. Good enough.

Glad to hear that things went well. Our local 'Ardboys was won by a HoC player as well, though he went for the Khorne approach.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Well done all the same, luck stomping around in May should you decide to. Would you take the same list, you figure?

Well, I still can't use the new Daemons for the semi-finals, so I'm rather constrained. With a Daemon as my Lord (and occupying multiple hero slots), I don't think I can fit enough magic in to make a worthwhile go of that.

Yeah, probably the same (or a similar) list. Pondering some minor tweaks (Trolls instead of ogres? A giant, instead of some of the spawn?), but I'm not going to buy a lot of mortal models for this, given that cross-lists of Chaos are going away.

(Oh, and bait-and-flee Marauder cav are lovely; I'd use more, but for the "not buying mortals" thing.)
