Thanks OMN.

Theo', He could also have taken off the damaged helmet and put on the breathing mask (all those pouches have to hold something after all).

Thanks CK.

Thanks Comrade. Are your danger stripes different from all the hazard stripes all over it?
There will be some red danger lines at some point too.

A little more on the forklift this time.
Tidied up the metals all over it and I've done the lights.

With a rare bit of osl for me.

Thanks CK. Yeah, I don't like "forced" osl. It can distract so easily from the rest of the model. This was just white with a tiny touch of orange in blended out (by removing the orange with solvent, rather than wet-blending with more paint). I was surprised at how easily it worked out in the end.

Not much more to do, all the signs and symbols, anything I've forgotten, and then weathering.

Thanks M_Cat.

Thanks Graven'. I was only going to do the top light in orange, but then I painted the other two...

And some progress on the marines:
Painted the faces of Mr Ultra and Mr Salamander.

Of the many photos I took this one of the Ultra actually looks good up close, and with that mask, the dark skin of the Salamander doesn't have much actual detail to show off anything but very subtle blending.

and
(for those not following York's thread, we recently had a conversation about painting eyes; he's trying it out, I don't tend to do them)

And with some final flourishes, they are done.

Brought together under extreme circumstances.
They are the last, best hope for all humanity.
Each with his own special skill set.
Together they form a force greater than the sum of the individual parts.
As different as they are, they work together against a common foe.
They are...

...as yet unnamed...

Group shot:

#1 "Air" the Raven Guard.

#2 "Earth" the Imperial Fist.

#3 "Fire" the Salamander.

#4 "Water" the Ultramarine.

#5 "the Fifth element" the Blood Angel.

and to finish the "Hero shot"

You wouldn't know they started with 2 identical pairs.
The A, E, F, W markings were easier than I first thought. Together with the V for "the fifth" they use V and I transfers with a few painted on additions.
While they all have a little battle damage to tie them together (there's a lot of togetherness with this squad ) there's no dirt because the dirt don't stick.

They'll be up on Etsy soon.

Well, I did try to get a good series of photos to show every step of my weathering, but due to being a quick method I couldn't stop to check if all the photos were ok. I took many to ensure that some might be alright to use though.
However, of the 50 or so photos, half of them are out of focus, and half of what's left have bad shadows hiding what I'm trying to show, and from what's left after that... I can't tell what's changing from one photo to the next...

So, without examples, a quick run through of my method for the weathering you'll see below:
Start with patches of rust: on this forklift I'm not doing chipped pant leading to rusty metal, this is old worn paint and rust from edge to edge...

...for chipped paint I sponge on the patches as the "undercoat", then add metal within those, then rust within that...

Sponge on the patches with a brown (plus a little red) where needed.
Then add some darkness to the middle of those patches by adding a little black to the above paint mixture.

The streaks are added using the dark rust paint mixture:
Starting from the origin of the streak, paint a squiggle of paint downwards about half the length of your desired streak.
Add large drops of white spirit either side of this paint (I am using Enamel paint, can't say how water would work for water-based paint) and let it drag the paint with it to create the start of the streak.
While still wet, add more paint to enhance the streak, if needed/wanted. Paint towards to origin as the paint will be strongest at the point you remove the brush from the surface.
Let dry for an hour or so.
Use an old paintbrush that has had all the bristles worn down to a rounded lump and dampen it with white spirit, use this as an eraser to remove tide-marks as the paint dried and/or to shape the streaks further to how they have formed.
let fully cure.

Repeat the above with lighter / darker paint mixtures to lengthen the streaks / darken the centre of the streaks.

If there's a call for it, I'll knock out a properly photographed version.
Or I'll try and get better photos next time I'm weathering something...

See the results below...

Replies first:
Thanks MT. Good to hear.

Thanks York'.

Thanks Graven'. The tape on the boxes is actually tape: I used sellotape to hold them closed as glue dried and decided to leave it on. Painted it lighter than the rest of the box and gave them a gloss finish.

Thanks CK.

Thanks Gits'. What's a forklift without things to fork...

Thanks Meer'. And now it has some "age" to it's story.

As I said, the weathering is to show age and wear-and-tear on the paintwork, not the usual battle damage paint chips.
No mud splashes either, as this is a city dweller. So just some grime in the crevices.

Lots of photos to show all the details:
Forklift... Done!

To show rotation and separation of the top and bottom sections:

Scale shots and closer views:

Note the "no step" and "hand hold" signs in the above photo.

Closer views of the cab, it's lights, and the osl:

Together at last with the workshop:

And picking up a friend to take home...

Zoom in, enjoy all the details, vote, and open your wallets... these'll be up in my Etsy shop soon...ish.

Thanks.

Good work on the marine squad. Interesting idea to have the chapter symbols blacked out. the bases and trims painted the same do help to bring some cohesion to them.

The forklift is really quite amazing though, it looks more like a kit than a scratch build. The subtle illumination from the beacon light on top is quite special. Your cardboard boxes actually look like cardboard boxes .

Its fantastic to see it all together with the mechshop. Awesome work all round

While I'm in here, I may as well bathe in the adoration for a bit...

Thanks Gits'. Good to hear you enjoyed the ride.

Thanks Theo'. Yeah, the crash piece is the only bit of terrain I have to show models in-situ. although that position is pretty much the only place I could fit the forklift on. Picking up or dropping off... it's up to the observer.
Next is something disgusting...

Thanks CK. We can only hope. Soon hopefully, I'm running out of space.

Thanks Comrade'. And this is love you can buy.

Thanks MT. Yeah, came out well, and the gloss finish helps.

Thanks Graven'. Ja, got to clear some stuff up before I can dig into the box and see what's next, I think it's Pox walkers or more plague marine types... it'll be a nice surprise for all of us.

The workshop and forklift are now up in my Etsy shop. Difficult to really know how much to charge for them really, the workshop went on for so long, stopping and starting, the forklift seemed so quick in comparison. Went with my gut feeling for price, probably a bargain... get them while they're cheap...

I'm sure I read it on the Dark Imperium release thread here on DDakka, someone mentioned about a book, released at the time, that had a squad like this with the chapter symbols blocked out with a grey square. I made a mental note to do this on one of the DI squads. But maybe I dreamt it... take inspiration whenever it hits you.

Thanks. The highest of praise for any scratch-build. Your resin bits helped out though.
The cardboard boxes are quite fun to build too, once I'd wrapped my head about how actual cardboard boxes are put together.

Bitten by the Nurgle bug as well I see.
I have the Dark Imperium box set to work through. The plan was to get it early and sell them all while the buzz was strong... sadly I don't work that quickly (and I've made many other projects in-between) and I'm still working my way through the box I've had since release day.

A quick update to show the next projects on the table(s).

As I said above, something disgusting, this way comes: Pox walkers, it is.
And you know me, half of them are going to require modification. The 20 total is made up of 10 pairs of identical twin miniatures. I don't do identical mini's...
I've (mostly) put them all together and will set about chopping them up to re-pose and change bits.

And in addition to that I'll be painting the figures from the Scythe board game ready for the end of the month.
For those not aware of the game, I have 5 factions, each faction has a main character figure with a "friend" animal, and 4 "mech" figures each.

Brief overview shot of the lot after cleaning mould lines and assembly (of the Poxies):

45 miniatures in total, that should bring up my average painted mini' count a bit.

I'll cover things in more detail as I come to them.
