Episode 4 is in the can! It should be available on our website http://www.TheD6Generation.com within the next hour or so.

It's actually another huge episode, so we split it into two again.

4a includes our usual Rapid Fire and Achievements in gaming, but is primarily devoted to a very detailed review of the new expansion Descent: A Road to Legend.

4b covers Hollywood's LoTRO comments, News, and something we're really excited about: "The Model's Eye View Battle Report"

Have a listen and let us know what you think!

Updated as I listen.

Love the new intro (especially the music section). It's perfect. Even the parody warning is well done. You warn without the lameness.

Geekly McNerdigan!!! LOL I love "rapid fire."

Sound is much better. Achievement sound can be heard, but isn't overpowering. I still think the ding is a bit subdued, but that's just a matter of my personal taste. Still need to be mindful of the mic as I could hear them being adjusted, and it was quite intrusive.

Turn down the volume on the "Podhammer Endorsement". It REALLY cuts in as obnoxiously loud compared to the volume of the preceding and following dialog.

YES!!! Achievement "Ding" for becoming a master piemaker!!! (nice touch)

The model's eye batrep is interesting. Seems rather longish thus far. And the narrator needs to concentrate on maintaining the accent. A few times in there (thus far) I heard Howard Cossell (both football and boxing). Too many times he just dropped the accent, usually when he was getting to an "exciting" moment. That is the time where it's CRUCIAL to maintain the accent/character.

Loved the Hollywood moment, as well as the final segment.

All in all... "Not too horrible."

Another good one Russ, my props to you and the guys!

Sound is MUCH improved, and the only thing I would suggest is perhaps a spit guard for Hollywood, as you could hear what seemed to be a few spit hissings surrounding his essess, also help preserve the mike as well and they are real cheap.

Really good review of Descent, Rise of Legends. Not a game I would have probably ever heard about otherwise and sounds very interesting indeed.

The models eye view BR was very cool conceptually and I think it is a nice segment to add. I would only suggest keeping them quick as they might loose the audience if they get long and its difficult to maintain an action packed dramatic narrative for too long.

Keeps getting better and I like how you are not afraid to play with the format.

Hey, I'm right there with ya. I think Hollywood needs to "Man up" and play a game with real combat. And what the heck is up with "your character doesn't look like what clothes/armor he/she has on?"

Crazy talk I tell ya.

@BigTMac:

Thanks for the kind words. Raef is still on a 'cheaper' mic than Craig and I are, and that will hopefully be corrected before Ep 5. The Bat Rep milage will vary, I think depending how 'into' the particular game you are. I'm sure Craig's second attempt will leverage lesson's learned.

Thanks for listening!

Just want to drop a note to say that i really enjoyed this week's episode, especially the Warmachine/Hordes battle report.

I wasn't too fond of the computer gaming segment but I learned something.

Keep up the great work. Can't wait till the next episode.

That AAR really sucked. In fact it sucked so bad I was compelled to join DakkaDakka to tell you how bad it sucked. The narrator switched between Australian, South African, British and New Zealand accents. A very talented fellow I'm sure, but it sucked. How did the AAR end? I fell asleep.

Other than that, it was a really good podcast. Ban the AAR.

Great show. I enjoyed the review of Descent so much I went out and bought the game. The battle report was a snoozefest though, didn't care for it at all.

I gotta say I didn't care for the battle report either. Even if it was a game I played like 40K, I'm not sure I would be interested in listening to an audio battle report and certainly not being familiar with the rules or factions of WM meant that I just *had* to skip past it.

Everything else you've ever done in the podcast has been interesting to me, even if I don't play the game you are talking about, but a 10 min-ish narrative battle report is always going to bore anyone who doesn't know the game intimately because they're going to have absolutely no idea what is being discussed.

So I'd recommend that narrative battle reports (of any game) get nixed because they exclude any non-players from enjoying them. If you want to do an audio battle report it has to be done in a way that non-players can enjoy.

Interesting response on the batrep, I thought it was a cool concept and even though ive never played trollbloods I enjoyed it. I am a Khador player however, and I do recall that it was what tied me into it.

Perhaps the batreps arent the best given that your show is intended to be a "general hobby" show as opposed to a Warmachine/Hoards show. I guess I have to agree with Yak. I loved it myself, but Im a big fan of Warmachine so I am probably biased.

It is your show however, and it's not like your getting paid for this so it really comes down to your enjoyment of producing the show. Whatever you decide I give you all props for being willing to try something new!

hey guys i enjoyed this episode. is anyone else having any audio gain issues with this episode ? it seems like my speakers are popping on the high ends , I'm not sure if its a production issue or my download is messed up.

Russ, have you found Descent to be a bit unbalanced in favor of the hero's ? my friends and i played the game when it first came out, but the overlord was always struggling to get an kills except if he drew the dark charm. after a few games, we quit playing because of the balance issue. but looking back maybe i was doing something wrong.

When I'm in power, here's how I'm gonna put the country back on its feet. I'm going to put sterilizing agents in the following products: Sunny Delight, Mountain Dew, and Thick-Crust Pizza. Only the 'tardiest of the 'tards like the thick crust.

I'm enjoying the podcast. My thoughts:

No MMO segments unless it's VERY directly wargame/boargame relevent. A segment about WAR makes sense. More than a few idle comments about LOTRO just seems like a waste of time.

The AAR was very hard to follow. yes, the accent was annoying, but I wouldn't mind hearing about smaller games in a bit more detail. Think more 'annotated sample games.'

I really liked hearing about Descent and I hope a campaign update is a regular feature.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on other games. A review of Flames of War, Arkham Horror or (my pet wargame) Heavy Gear Blitz would be nice.

The talk about GW is always amusing.

Otherwise, keep up the good work.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

This is funny, because if you read the various threads on the FFG forums one minute someone is claiming it is all overlord, and the next someone is saying it's all heroes.

Here's the thing: It is 4 v 1, so your Overlord player needs to be a strong player. Also, the early dungeons in the basic descent game DEFINITELY favor the heroes.

I kept loosing as overlord on the first couple dungeons in Descent, for example. So next time I tried a later mission (the one with all the Manticores) and I was determined to play hard ball, I killed the poor heroes in the first room! Granted, they made some mistakes, but it can go either way.

Another thing that helps the overlord is the later expansions... "Treachery" cards allow the overlord to 'build' his deck before the game. This allows the overlord to build a deck that suites his play style. Don't like traps? Fine, add more spawn cards...etc.

So I'd recommend next time you play figure out who your 'strongest' player is, i.e. who is the guy always figuring out the best moves for the heroes to make. Then, make HIM the overlord and see how easy it is.

All that said, they definitly learned a lot from earlier versions of Descent, and Road to Legend corrects a lot of things. It really makes it a whole new game. If you liked Descent but had balance or game length issues, I'd give RTL a try.

We're trying to stay broad, and I'm sure we'll get to other favorites. FoW is definitely on the list, and anything by FFG is always on the radar. Although Craig was just picking on me tonight that I always am talking about FFG board games. "But they have so much cool stuff!" So we'll see what's next. Stay tuned!

Thanks for listening!

This wasn't you, it was us. We went from too quite to too loud in some places. This just proves that three noobies can still crew up with good equipment.

I think we've got the problem nailed down and we hope to have that fixed by next show.

Love the show got introduced via podhammer. fist off how long has ... Hollywood been playing lotr online? cus he makes some good points but it sounds like he is not even a year in yet, since that is when the game rely starts to drag (though you don’t notice it and make excuses why its still fun)and becomes more of a job than fun you almost feel like you have to be on because your friends are counting on you if you dont show and dont get me started on the hardcore raiders lol put in for vacations sick time etc lol as I used to be one. Quit cold turkey.
Oh yes 10000 bc was like mega maid and went for suck to blow. hover amazing how you are able to track a group of men that sound like goulds from stargate with no tracks from the frozen north to the rain forest being attacked by axe beaks that werent even alive when humans were (i wish that they would have just put in the raptors they wanted to put in but no way to unbeliveable). to the savanna where what a group of 8 men on horse back captured all them people when they had like what 100 spear wielding warriors in the village... thank god for the tiger that felt it had to repay a debt...what did i just say lol.

but thx for the great podcast looking forward to it and i have been trying to get into warmachine and hordes myself just hard to find people to play with on my odd schedule. everblight and cryx for me love the fluff well cant wait to hear the next episode.

Great podcast! I really enjoyed the models eye batt rep, but next time get some in game pics liked to the D6 site for eyecandy reference while listening. I think it'll help those who don't know the chosen system get a bearing for what the troops look like and going on in the battle.

The episode was great....up until the Privateer press battle report. It was well done....but I felt it was very similar to some guy at a game shop reenacting the cool battle he had last week with someone else. In other words, of no interest to me. I got 5 mins into it and skipped past it, sorry. I know a lot of work went into it, but I couldn't sit through it.

That would have made it alot more palatable for me.

I know you are posting alot of stuff to cross reference with the podcast, but pics of the battle might have made me listen to it all, and maybe even enjoy it.

Had a listen to episode 4 and loved it. Craig's nicknames in the opening segment are still funny to me. Keep it up.

You guys are tormenting me! I had a similar reaction to Descent that Craig did. It BOTHERED me that my character died once and again in the course of the game. Unlike, Craig, all the other videogame trappings annoyed me too. It BOTHERED me that we found glyphs and teleported back to town. It BOTHERED me that the best strategy on the initial games seemed to be to run in, NOT fight monsters, grab the treasure and run away to town until you were buff enough to walk all over everything. If you tried to fight the monsters, you were bogged down in monster after monster until they swarmed you. It basically felt like playing a laggy computer game. The most fun I had in our three games was painting the nagas. I ended up giving the game away to a kid at my school game club. Now you review a supplement that makes it sound a lot more fun and which eliminates a lot of the negatives. Doh!

I enjoyed Rafe's MMORPG talk, although it made LOTR sound no more interesting than any of the others. I guess if I had a group of friends who loved that sort of thing, they could talk me into it, but it sounds like it would be more fun to get together with friends and paint figures, a process that has an outcome and afterwards instead of being a medal-wining baker, I'd have my Hordes trolls painted.

I enjoyed the battle report a bit because I have played Hordes and Warmachine. I have a suggestion. Maybe you could do the PEASANT's eye view instead of Alton Ashley's. A peasant might not know who the players were, so instead of saying Borka and expecting us all to know, he could describe the great hulking trollblood and the jacks, etc. As a bonus, we can all do the peasant Dennis from Monty Python voice a lot better than we can Steve Irwin. (Looking at Craig!)

Keep up the good work.

I just finished listening to all 4 episodes, and I must say I'm really enjoying the podcast. I especially like the boardgame reviews, as I really wasn't aware that these more intensive games existed and your segments prompted me to have a look at both Descent and Tannhauser down at the local shop (disappointed the Descent minis aren't pre-paints).

Regarding the much-maligned audio batrep, I've got to add my voice to the others requesting some kind of visual aid.

So thanks for all the hard work that goes into a podcast and keep it up! And oh yeah - I don't like pies either.
