hey

I am looking at getting into warmachine, having converted from GW, and was wondering what other brands of paintbrushes there are on the market at a good quality and a good price that you guys and gals could recommend.

Thanks

well, your gw brushes will still work fine...they won't burst into flames if touched to a warmachine mini...

the new p3 brushes are a bit over-priced...
windsor & newton are the hot trend...
da vinci and raphael are a close second...

i use gw brushes for my metals, and W&N series 7 for my colours...

my lgs does gw for 20% off, so the gw brushes are a good deal, but they have to be replaced every 6 months or so...

W&N are dicounted deep on dickblick.com...i'm told these will last about a year of heavy use if well taken care of...we'll see...

i paint everyday, so my brushes get a lot of use, and fine tips start to fray eventually...my fine brushes are always the first to go, and the large brushes last a lot longer...

hope this ramble helps a bit...

cheers
jah

I use da Vinci Maestro brushes, which are "comparable" to Windsor & Newton Series 7s (read: not quite as good but cheaper). If you're like me, once you try a sable brush you'll never go back to synthetic. They hold and distribute the paint much more nicely (so much so that even a mediocre painter like me notices) and last longer with good treatment.

I've just started WM myself, so welcome to the club!

Last year (or the year before), I went to da Vinci sables for all of my brushes.

Speaking from experience, the idea that one needs to replace brushes yearly (or more often) just doesn't make sense to me. If well-cared for, brushes are an investment that will last for many years of heavy painting. I'm talking hundreds upon hundreds of models here. Even if you're a commercial "layer" painter, you should be able to get a *lot* of use out of a brush, probably a couple *thousand* figures. If you're replacing brushes that have touched less than a thousand minis, you're doing something wrong.

They will if the mini is on fire.

I have to second the W&N. I don't take real good care of mine, so
as JHDD says, I ruin them pretty quickly.

Which makes them perfect for drybrushing.
