So I'm finishing up my Ogre army and I'm getting to doing the bases.

Now previously all I did to the bases of my armies was put some sand/rocks on there, paint it, and then highlight it.

This time I'm planning on doing that, but I wanted to use some grass on the bases. I had a few questions:

What kind of material do you recommend? Something fancy or just the normal style "green flock"?
My models are going to get a matte finish spray on them, should I put the grass on before or after I spray them with the matte finish?

I've used the same basing technique for years now. It's pretty simple: Sand on the base from the undercoat stage, so from black I paint it Scorched Brown, drybrush with Bleached Bone, and then stick on random patches of Static Grass. Works well enough, and I quite like it.

If you are planning to use static grass or any other grass/weed/reed type of flock, anything that will stand upright, off of the base, spray finish your models before you put the tall stuff on.

If you matte finish after you've added the static grass or reeds, the spray will bead up and stick clumps together which will ruin the look of it. this will, in turn, really put a damper on your base that will forever bug you.

As far as static grass goes, Gale Force 9 has an autumn/winter grass that doesn't clash so much with a brown base; the regular GW "springtime" grass looks very bright.

Here's an Ork I did to show you what I'm talking about. I do basically what Vandez does, except instead of the bleached bone I used Earth brown (that's the Vallejo name, and I think the GW name is very close). It has the bright green grass, which you can see in the background.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1
