Hello all,
I'm new to the forum, so please be gentle, and I'm also quite new to the hobby. I've been painting for about a year, in a very 'pick it up when I can' style, but have decided that I needed a focus and decided to assemble an ork army, having always liked their daftness.
I'm going to compile a 1000 point army first, which will mainly be used against my brother in law's necron army. The reason for posting on here is that I'm looking for a sensible army that will be first and foremost fun, but also stands a slight chance of winning the odd game. I can see a few possible flaws in my current list, but thought I'd ask you all for your opinions. Just remember that I'm looking for a good army that's fun to play, not necessarily the best tournament winning force. Here's what I've got so far:
Old zogwort
Big Mek with Shokk Attack Gun
20 Ork boyz with nob, power klaw, 2 rokkit launchas
20 Ork boyz with nob, power klaw, 2 rokkit launchas
10 Lootas
6 Tankbustas, with nob, 2 bomb squigs, tank hammer
10 Stormboyz, with nob, power klaw
By my reckoning, that makes bang on 1000 points.
Please let me know you thoughts... Thanks!

Why take a Tankbustas Nob? He doesn't add anything, really.
Looks like a workable "fun" list.

While tankbustas are ridiculously flluffy and fun, having only six means you'll either be humping cover, or running off the board when you take your first wound. Being that necrons have a ridiculous amount of shooty goodness, that's a high probability of happening to any smallish ork unit.
If it were me, I'd drop the tankbustas and add numbers to the stormboys, as they can cause havoc if they make it to a gunline alive.
Really it just comes down to your fun quotient. If you'd rather yell at monoliths and fire a handful of rokkits, keep em! Play with them and if you find they consistently run before being very effective, (which I fear they will, more often than not) fill out the stormboys.

The reasoning behind the tankbustas was that I had 110 points lefts and wanted to find another unit that looked fun to play. I see what you mean about the small unit though. As for why I took the nob, I just thought it made sense to sneak in the extra attack and wound, but in fairness I couldn't afford the power klaw which would have really given him value. I love the idea of the bomb squigs running around and blowing up!
As for the stormboyz, I guess more can't hurt. Although, having not played with them yet, can you explain why they cause "havoc"? Is it simply that you can get the boyz in there so quickly? That's probably a stupid question..... I can put an extra 9 in there, giving a total of 998 points, or put 8 stormboyz in and give the nob 'eavy armour and a bosspole, also allowing me to sneak in 'eavy armour for the mek with shokk attack gun, who I guess is pretty much the main target for a necron force, with a total of 1001 points.
Any thoughts? Thanks again.

Sorry about that, I just used the underscore for emphasis. Havoc in that if a unit of stormboys makes it up the side of the board relatively unharmed, you're looking at a powerklaw nob with a bunch of ablative wounds that gets to chew through destroyers, heavy destroyers, and warriors. Even if the squad doesn't thoroughly trounce a few units, the threat of turn 2 assault will definitely divert any opposing general's attentions.
They're basically a very big threat. Either the opposing army concentrates firepower on it early (saving your troops on foot) or it hauls across the board and slams into the side or rear of the army very early.
But like I said, playtest a bit, there's no reason to lose the tankbusta squad until you've played a few games and gotten a feel for how the army works as a whole. Best of luck!

Thank you for the great advice Teek - a great help. I guess I'll just have to play a few games of either style and see which works best for me / I enjoy the most.
Incidentally, since the driving force behind my army is an enjoyable game rather than crushing my opposition, are there any other units you can particularly reccomend that I've overlooked?

Really, your list has a lot of the units that I personally think are great fun to play.
-Nothing, and I mean nothing, tops the SAG mek. Whether it blows half the opposition into ether, or misfires and rips a hole in your own force, it's just about the most fun single unit you can field in 40k, in my opinion.
-Lootas are fun because it's always a hoot to roll buckets full of dice. It makes lots of noise (can't beat that) and it's always great for the reaction from your opponent on the chance you toss down an ungodly 45 shots from a single unit.
-Zogwort: Turning a 200pt hq into a squig is the stuff of legends
If you want something fast and dead hard, try the requisite Biker Boss. Warboss, attack bike, cybork body, power klaw. Very fast, very very killy. The only other thing that really makes me smile uncontrollably is a large unit of burna boys. Loaded into a battlewagon, you can move them up fast and drop a ridiculous number of templates.
You're definitely on point for a fun game, best of luck!

Thank you so much Teek, I'm really looking forward to that first game. maybe I'll go with the biker warboss and battlewagon full of burnas for a 1500 point force....hmmmm, now you've got me thinking!
Cheers.
