Well, been perusing the new demon codex and have a question.
Is there a point to taking bloodcrushers over bloodhounds in the new codex (aside from slot constraints)

I cant see a benefit.

That's a reasonable question, my quick rundown on the pro's and cons of 1 bloodcrusher vs. 2 flesh hounders (which is equivalent in points terms)

Hounds:
1 more inch of move
twice as many wounds
Greater unit strength
MR 3

Bloodcrusher
4+ armor save from Brass Colossus
hits slightly harder (killing blow and 2 of the 4 attacks are s6)
Can have full command
Can benefit from Herald of Khorne
Smaller minimum unit size (1 BC vs. 5 Hounds minimum) if you just want to corner up alongside a ranked unit this could work...

I tend to concur that the Flesh Hounds are better, 4 vwounds vs. 2 for each 70 points just blows away the other differences.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

i think each has it's ow purpose. the hounds are obviously to act as fast cav, and flankers, while the bloodcrushers are there simply to do crap loads of damage. so if your looking for a head on fight go for the bloodcrushers, if you want to move up alongside the enemy to aid other charges then your better off with the hounds

The bloodcrushers would be my number 1 thing to kill with all my shooty stuff (excepting the bloodthirster), so they end up being a fire magnet to allow your bloodletter units up.

Flesh hounds on the other hand will likely be on flanks so will face a bit of shooting and some other light units so will be harried less, meaning your main battle line gets up.

is a fast khorne army possible? because i was thinking of having bloodcrusher units as heavy cavalry with flesh hounds as fast cavalry with heralds on chariots

well you still need core units, and if its khorne then its blood letters. in the new book the only core units are the 4 base god demons (bloodletters, plguebearers, demonetts and horrors) as well as furies, which of course dont count towards core minimums so you need to take some letters no matter what.

a 2k build might look like:

thirster

herald chariot

herald chariot

10 letters FC
10 letters FC
10 letters FC

5 hounds
5 founds

3 crushers
3 crushers

just an example of course, not looking at points. i would personally have the heralds in larger blocks of letters to let the whole unit get hatred.

Forget about the Herald on a chariot. Just put him in a unit of Crushers w/ the Banner of endless victory (+D6") on the charge.

Loose the full command from the Blood Letter units and take a BSB w/ the standard of sundering.

i agree on the standard of sundering, its pretty damned wicked.

Bloodcrushers look like they might be better shock troops. a unit of three to five will be rather expensive. seeing as they're pretty fast and, even tho they dont have as many wounds as hounds, they may very well do a lot of damage to a unit before dying or having to take a Daemon Insability Test (or whatever its called). those maybe dangerous to the low wounds on the unit tho.

otherwise they look like they would work well against warmachines or other big cavalry.

Well, the fact that bloodcrushers can take a banner to not be march blocked is pretty nice. Either way, when we play I reccomend lots of blood crushers and no hounds =).

my buddy takes a unit of 8 bloodcrushers...though, having looked at the new book today, I dont know that he'll be too happy...the 2 wounds thing is going to tick him off (he toook a unit of 8 so that when he charged with his BCs (with a bloodthirster, exalted daemon and Belakor), he'd cause so many wounds that he'd outnumber, and therefore cause auto-break.

"Sir, the enemy has us encircled!"

"Most excellent. They can't escape us now!"
