Anyone seen these yet? Is it based on 40K or not?

Cool to see it's finally out. I'm interested to see how the game works.

I personally don't know what system it's based on, but I would like to know as well.

To be honest though, this thread would be a lot better off being posted in News and Rumors, since it is news, and because News and Rumors gets a lot more traffic than the Historical Games forum, so you'd be more likely to find more information.

I doubt that it's based on 40K; more likely to be a derivation of the skirmish system used for Legends of the Old West/ High Seas.

WW1 skirmish?

Wouldn't most people wanting a WW1 game want the big units, fortifications, machine gun nests, long artillery, biplanes, trenches, barbed wire, mines, gas, and early tanks?

I got my copy of Great War rules almost a week ago, and after a first in deep reading I can share with you all some of the basics of the game:

- Rules are almost a copy of wh40k 4th edition with some interesting additions to give them the necessary "savoir"...

- Basics of movement, fire, assault , morale, exactly the same as in 40k....

- The scale of the game is battalion and companies and platoons... but to play a battalion you don’t need 400 minis... each figure represent 3 of their kind.... so platoons consist of between 8 and 18 figures... the normal is 10... companies are 2 to 4 platoons (30 guys on average) ... battalions range from 2 to 4 companies (90 to 180 figures)... depending on of how many infantry companies you get you are allowed a number of support units (scouts platoons, cavalry, pioneers) or weapons ( medium field guns, HMG, 1918 tanks, mortars)

- The book includes the equivalent to two codexes... first armies for 1914 (BEF, French and German) and second the same armies for 1918... Planned extensions will provide lists for Turkish & Anzacs, Yankees, and 1916 armies...

- There are no armour save, but each unit receiving fire can "go to ground", getting a 6+ cover save if they are in the open or improving by 1 their cover save if they already got one. That let the unit pinned.

- Two special rules to shoot the HMG... either focusing on one enemy unit... or creating a firelane that impact to as many units as are in range and in the “fire-cone”

- Heavy weapons (field guns, HMG) once placed to shoot, can not move any more ("difficult to carry" rule)

- Grenades allow you to assault enemy entrenched positions, pinning the defenders so their initiative drops to 0…

- BEF soldiers are the best shoots and best morale in the game, but are expensive …for each SMLE you field in 1914 you will have to face almost 2 Mausers… In the late war armies relied on the use of LMG (one for each platoon) that can be fired on the move

I highly recommend this book to all people that like 40k and aso like history... exchanging those plasma guns for a Lewis gun and engaging "huns" instead of orcs is a nice change, and, as all of you already know the basic o f the rules you don't ever need to change some of your tactics...

For my own part I have already assembled and painted my first BEF HMG team and I am reading the first infantry platoon… using Great War miniatures from North Star

It sounds like it will work well for trench raid games.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

where is the best place to actually get the models for this game?

Playing a WW1 40K would be fun! It's just nobody seems to play historical games like this anymore.

I was looking at the North Stars website through thier shops and found these WW1 box sets on Renegademiniatures.com

German Regulars

British Regulars

They are a little bit expensive but are easier to buy than Great War miniatures packs!!

Yeah but a 20% postage and packaging cost, which would be quite expensive.

I played two games of this last weekend. I really liked the mechanics and wow, does it look good on a table! The morale works a little differently from 40K since you can regroup your squads until they drop below 5 models vs. 50%.

I should have taken some pics. I'll link it to our website's battle report when we do a big game in a few weeks.

Another sensible idea is to use 1/72 scale figures Airfix & HAT make them it's much cheaper. Incidentally anyone know of a good painting guide website?

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.
