My friend decided to finally give in and use the newer Ork Codex and we had a blast. Made several mistakes, but it was still fun. Hope you enjoy!

We rolled for mission and got Cleanse and decided to use 5th ed. Deployment rules to speed things up, meaning he deployed everything first and got to go first. He set up on the forward edges of his quarter, with the Deff Dread, Battlewagon, and Shootas leading the way against my army and the Lootas and Nobz heading for the ruins in the other adjacent quarter. Zzap guns and Big Mek camp out in the corner with great
LOS. Seeing all those heavy weapons, I decided to hold my monolith in reserve and use my troops to challenge the Deff Dread and Shootas for the quarter. I deployed D-field scarabs to charge the Deff Dread and hoped to use my other scarabs to get to the Zzap guns before my monolith came into play. I knew phase out would be easy, so the plan was to keep the Warriors out of as much trouble as possible and just use them to claim objectives.
Necrons huddle in the backfield, awaiting the Ork barrage. Rocks in the middle just block LOS, blue patch is just difficult terrain, no save. Nothing says “shoot me!” like scarabs out in the open! Ready to start busting some heads TURN 1 Orks-Everything mobile moved into adjacent quarters, with the Lootas heading for the ruins and the Shootas pushing for the trees. The Nobz hugged the rocks and moved forward slowly. The Dread moved towards the Warriors, dropping one with his Rokkit launcha. The Looted Wagon moved forward as well and dropped a template on the black scarabs (no D-fields), killing 2 bases.
Necrons-Black scarabs boost into the rocks, grey scarabs move to assault the Dread. Warriors and Lord move towards the trees, but Warriors get crappy Diff. Terrain rolls and the Lords all alone. Never good. Grey Scarabs get an Immobilized result and Dread drops 1 base.
Stupid Disruption fields TURN 2 Orks-Seeing that the Lord was so near, the Shootas couldn’t resist the urge and let out a terrifying Waaaaugh! Everything fleeted, with the Shootas only getting 2”, right up to the edge of the woods. The Zzap crews moved back, trying to get away from the oncoming scarabs, and the MegaNobz spread out, attempting to deny scarabs space to move through. The Wagon dropped a template on Warriors Alpha, but it scattered…..right into my Lord! He took a wound and grumbled about rotten Ork luck. The Shootas then rolled a 6 to assault the Lord and I figured it was all over for him. 30 attacks later, the Lord and Shootas are left staring at each other….with neither side inflicting a single wound! It was ridiculous. The scarabs got a Crew Shaken on the Dread and lost another base.
Necrons-I rolled a 1 for reserves, no monolith this turn! Given the number of Zzap guns on the table, I consider it a good thing and move on. In what scientists are calling “pretty f-ing ridiculous” the black scarabs were just able to squeeze into a narrow corridor without being too close to the Nobz. Warriors Alpha made it into assault range, with Warriors Beta rolling 2 for Diff. Terrain and getting stuck where they are. Then things begin to go really well for the Necrons. Warriors Alpha join the scrum in the woods. The Lord dropped 2 Shootas and the Warriors dropped 10, with the remaining Shootas only causing 1 wound on the Lord. The Shootas fall back and get swept by the Lord’s higher
Init. That’s right, Necrons beat Orks….in assault! The grey scarabs lost another base but finally brought down the Dread and made a massacre move towards the wagon. Meanwhile, the black scarabs just barely made it to the smaller Zzap crew and make them fall back, with just enough movement to reengage the larger Zzap crew nearby.
That's just silly
Great moments in Necron history TURN 3 Orks-The Lootas completely moved into the ruins, securing that quarter. Sadly, the smaller Zzap group was unable to regroup because my scarabs are closer than 6” and they fell off of the table. The Nobz headed for the black scarabs and the Wagon pulled away from the grey scarabs, hoping to blast them point blank. Both the Wagon and the Shokk gun scatter off of the scarabs, causing 0 wounds and making the Orks very nervous. The Nobz moved in and stomped 3 scarab bases flat, with the scarabs only killing 1 grot in return.
Necrons-Monolith finally showed up and came down right behind the wreckage of the Dead Dread. The Lord gets pulled through and moves to the Wagon, accompanied by the scarabs. With one swipe of his scythe the Wagon is destroyed and the scarabs sat around twiddling their….antennae? Anyway, the Nobz wiped out the remaining black scarabs, but not before 2 more grots go down.
TURN 4 Orks-Not much happened here. The Nobz moved into position to attempt to shield the grots from the remaining scarabs. Meanwhile, the remaining Zzap guns dropped two bases while the Shokk gun absolutely missed the monolith…which is kind of amazing.
Necrons-Monolith moved to the center and Warriors Beta get pulled through the portal and move into the center rocks to contest the quarter with the Lootas. Warriors Alpha pulled back to behind the woods to avoid any shots and hold their quarter. The Lord boosts to the center as well, right in front of the monolith to avoid shots. The remaining 2 scarab bases skirted around the Nobz and were able to engage the grots, killing 3 or 4 and forcing the grots to fall back off of the board once more!
TURN 5 Orks-And everything was going so well. The Shokk gun finally hits something and the template landed square on my monolith. And, of course, he rolled double 6’s….meaning an automatic Penetrating shot. The Monolith explodes, but, thankfully, only explodes out 1”, missing my Lord by ½”. Needless to say, I’m pretty bummed. The Nobz, encouraged by the destruction, moved in and crushed the remaining bugs under their feet, laughing all the while, I’m sure.
The Monolith that once was... At this point, we decided to call the game. There was no way he could contest the quarter with Warriors Alpha in it, and he wouldn’t be able to get shots on Warriors Beta to wipe them out, making that quarter contested. The final score was 705 to 516, with the Necrons just barely getting a Solid Victory. The craziest part? I played this entire game without firing a shot. Not a single one. That’s gotta be a first.
We made several huge mistakes in the game. The ork player thought you only rolled
2d6 on the Shokk gun if it hit something. Instead, it should be every time you fire the gun. Given the varied nature of those results, it could have drastically changed the game had the gun exploded in turn 2 or had the Mek been zapped through to engage my Monolith in assault instead. The variables boggle the mind.
Neither of us had played with a Dreadnought before, so we were a bit unclear about Dreadnought power weapons. Turns out he should have been swinging with
Str. 10 and crushing my bugs left and right. His loss.
Lastly, the ork player forgot to roll his “Don’t Push Dat!” for the wagon each time it moved, and I forgot to call him on it. Se la Vis.
