I dont' know if this has been proposed, but as part of my "Finals are over and I can post all my ideas" plan I'm going to be sharing some stuff that's been in my brain. anyway, it's simple. Rather then price each marine in a squad equally, or force a number of marines to be purchased before a heavy can be bought, simply charge a ton more for the first 5, and then make the next 5 cheaper!

Tactical squad: 115pts
1 Veteran Sgt
4 Marines

Additional marines, up to five, may be purchased for 10pts a piece.

Under this rule, the ubiquitus six man las/plas would go from 115 to 150pts (assuming not change in heavy weapons). It's closer, IMO to what the squad is actually worth, and it still allows the player to buy as much squad as he feels he needs. It's not as high handed as the DA rule, nor is it as permissive as the current SM rule.

That's not a bad idea.

I think Codex: SM (4th) prices like this:
6 Tacs @ 15 each = 90 pts
1 Plasma @ 10 pts
1 Lascannon @ 15 pts
= 115 pts total, and woefully undercosted.

Codex: Blud Angelz (5th) is like this:
4 Tacs + VS = 115 pts
1 Plasma @ 15 pts
1 Lascannon @ 20 pts
= 150 pts total.

So GW has already addressed this issue head-on, except that they don't discount the additional marines, nor do they allow players to buy them individually.

Personally, I like the BA / DA approach better. It's much Fluffier and punishing.

BTW, I predict Codex: SM (5th) will be like this:
4 Tacs + VS = 100 pts
1 Plasma @ 15 pts
1 Lascannon @ 25 pts
= 140 pts total.

it might be better to comparison price of the Dark Angels Codex because the Blood Angel squad included the priced of a Death Company Marine (30pts retail). Plus you can't get both a Lascannon in a short squad of Blood Angels without having five spare. Might be something to note that the Veteran leads an advance squad of four Bolters or something.

Dark Angel Tactical Squad
Four Tactical Marines and one Veteran Sergeant = 90pts
1 Plasma Gun = +15pts
Five Tactical Marines = +75
1 Lascannon = +20pts
=110 for Las/Plas Combat Squad, 90 for Advance Combat Squad.

Here's my question: why don't they just equalize the point values for infantry heavy weapons between tac and dev squads? Instead of paying an outrageous 35 pts per lascannon in a dev squad or a dirt cheap (in comparison) 15 pts in a tac squad, why not 20 for tac squads and 30 for devs?

The Blood Angels and Dark Angels books already set Lascannons at 20 points in a Tactical Squad and 35 points in a Devastator Squad.

Like I had said, before: I think the costs of infantry based heavy weapons should be equalized between the costs of tactical squads and devastator squads. Apparently the idea has already started being put in place and the trend has kinda slipped under my nose in the blood angel and dark angel codexes because I really haven't been studying them that astutely..
