If you were to make a traitor guard army using the FW renegades, how would you build the army for roughly a 3000 pt apocalypse army?
Standard kind of army with tons of guardsmen? (prolly too pricey)
Stormtrooper army?
Mostly tank heavy?
Include a unit or 2 of demons since it's all chaos?
Include a unit or 2 of chaos marines since it's all chaos?
Build all your tanks on defiler bodies?
It will definitely be an apoc army, don't plan to ever really do a tournament with em or anything like that.. and my group is laid back enough to allow it even at lower points.. but 3k is the goal.
just looking for some ideas

Honestly, I would dust off the eye of terror codex and use the lost and the damned list because that's basically what they are. You can just model them as preheresy for theme. Maybe include some of the new daemons as well.

"But remember that there are over 1000 chapters of spase marienz! So the SM codex has to cover over 1000 different kinds of spase marienz! Codex CSM only has to cover 1 kind (the Chaos kind). And I don't even think Eldar are a kind of spase marienz at all. Hurr!"

It's a company which specialises in the selling of plastic representations of Elves, Goblins, and 9 foot tall superhuman soldiers from the future - have you ever considered that, as adults, it is US that is intruding upon THEIR world?

I thought about that.. but I still wanted it to be a guard army really.. and I think for 2000 pts and under I'd like to have a halfway codex legal list in case I do ever end up playing outside the group.. so I'm thinking now I could do something like 2000 pts worth of guard type stuff, and the other 1000 pts would be maybe a unit of plague marines, some plaguebearers, maybe some nurglings.. and if cash will allow it, one of those FW machurius vulcan tanks, or baneblade..

My suggestion is:
500 points - Baneblade or 2 Leman Russ Tanks
1000 to 500 points - Demons
2000 to 1500 points - Guard infantry with 1-2 Leman Russ tanks

Seconded. Take a baneblade (cause its cool), 1,000 pts of Daemons, and 1500 of IG.
That gives you 2 armies as well for lower points games.

Just as an aside, Witch hunters does a pretty good job repping traitor guard and LatD. The zealots make great mutants, priests make good aspiring champs. Arco's make good chaos ogers, big mutants, spawns. Use gaurd units, make the =I= storm troopers elite looking troops (like those cool skull helmet models that the name escapes me).
Daemons and Princes are the only real problematic proxy, although could use repentia or grey knights or something like that for the daemons and that walking throne guy or the sisters special character could rep a demon prince I guess.

sounds like a plan
The fluff I'm thinking of is this renegade warband was a guard detachment that was caught in a prolonged war against chaos. Long story short, disease breaks out and the fearless leader makes a pact with nurgle to not die, half his men don't wanna die either so they join in and sacrifice those who oppose. So they still get to be diseased, but don't die, and they turn into papa nurgle's mindless slaves.
Part of the inspiration came from bruce willis's army guys in Planet Terror.. prolly gonna name the army after his unit but I wanted to add the extra demony things just to add some extra points and not have to spend so much on FW stuff. I thought about giving them the nurgley baneblade (plaguereaper?) but I think I wanna stick with normal tanks and just paint em to be all rusted out and full of mud. I was also thinking about maybe getting a FW machurius vulcan tank instead of a baneblade.
I'm thinking I'll get a box of catchatans, cadians and zombies, the FW renegade body/head bitz & the command squad, and possibly some wfb empire flagelants and just mix everything together. and they'll "count as" stormtroopers. I already have the gunline guard platoons for my regular army so I want something different and special for the traitors.
