my son has recently started building a tau army and has made 2 broadsides - one with railguns and missiles, the other with railguns and plasma rifles. is this ok are do all the broadsides in a group have to be the same?

They can both be used in the same team using up one slot in the FOC or fielded separately using two FOC slots.

As tegeus-Cromis said, it's legal, each broadside can pick its own individual upgrades and support systems as described in the Tau Armory
