Thanks to all that helped me come up with a Necron list. After going through both codexs I am unsure wether I would have more fun with nids.
As i said this will be my first game since 3rd ed and is just a fun game really so am not trying to make a tourney list but at the same time this is against a work collegue so bragging rights are at stake.
I came up with this list based mainly on what I have painted at home, is it any good or will the opposing Salamander marines kick its biomorphin backside?
HQ
1 hive tyrant : sything talons, rending claws, toxin sacs, acid maw.
1 tyrant guard.
3 warriors:sything talons, devourers.
ELITE
4 warriors: sything talons, deathspitters, venon cannon
4 warriors: sything talons, deathspitters, venon cannon
3 warriors, sything talons, rending claws, extended carapace, toxin sacs
TROOPS
10 genestealers
10 genestealers
HEAVY
carnifex: sything talons, crushing claws, tusked, mace tail, toxin sacs.
999pts
thoughts, ideas?
thanks in advance

Welcome back to 40k, warriors are now useless! Why would you take RC on your HT, you're S6 MC, you should be ignoring armor saves anyway and you already get +2d6 AP if you really wanted to assault a vehicle. CC carnifexes also are very bad, WS3 I1 and no speed upgrades possible. That's a minimum 4 turns before it can do anything and then it will die to hidden powerfists. The way of the present is what is called "Godzilla". At 1k you can take shooting carnfexes with +BS, VC, Barbed Strangler, and RC. Most people take at least 2 even at 1k. Luckily, we have plenty of points to work with because warriors are ridiculously overpriced and can not be screened in 4th and thus should all be dropped. However if your heart is set on them yolu need to drop the ranged weapons and take WS, I,RC, and ST. Don't give them +S as many people are tempted to do, they are there for rending that's it. The Genestealer squads are also way too large and can now get their AC upgraded to 4+..yay no more dying to bolters. and it is a must. I've found that 8 is the optimal size as they will still hit hard enough but be nimble enough to still use cover effectively. CC HT without wings is also useless for the same reason CC Carnifex is. Give it wings and drop acid maw. You'll also need to drop the one tyrant guard.

"But remember that there are over 1000 chapters of spase marienz! So the SM codex has to cover over 1000 different kinds of spase marienz! Codex CSM only has to cover 1 kind (the Chaos kind). And I don't even think Eldar are a kind of spase marienz at all. Hurr!"

dammit
I built the army last year without thinking of what would be effective, I just built what I wanted things to look like. ( I got most of it 50% off when a store closed down).
I really like the warrior minis so I bought loads of them.
I'm aware of the zilla lists, I havent been out of the hobby so much as retired from the playing side of things.
Thanks for you pointers though, maybe i'll go for something inbetween my visual ideals and your tactical know how.
ps Pistolwraithcaine.... GO STARS!!

Well, do what you like because if you don't like your army who cares if you win, you know? I'm hoping that warriors will become a bit better in 5th when you will be able to screen them with gaunts.
And yes, the Stars are awesome, hopefully they'll beat Detroit again tonight!

you're right, the last thing I want is to have an all conquering army that doesnt inspire me. I think I will take up some of your ideas, gonna see if I can prise the fex apart and magnetise it.
I've been a big Dallas fan for years,(despite being over the pond), Modano is something of a hero of mine.
