I'm going to enjoy this race. A lot.
A nice snippet
http://www.politico.com/blogs/jonathanmartin/0508/Obama_criticizes_absent_McCain_on_Senate_floor_McCain_hits_back_hard.html
Obama criticizes absent McCain on Senate floor, McCain hits back hard
Jim Webb's GI Bill passed the Senate today with a bipartisan majority, 75-22. Clinton and Obama were both there, but McCain is in California today on the fundraising trail.
Obama used the opportunity to once again tie his rival to the president.
"I respect Sen. John McCain's service to our country," Obama said on the Senate floor this morning. "He is one of those heroes of which I speak. But I can't understand why he would line up behind the president in opposition to this GI Bill. I can't believe why he believes it is too generous to our veterans. I could not disagree with him and the president more on this issue."
The McCain campaign responded by issuing a sharply worded and lengthy statement in the senator's name. McCain notes his support for an alternative to the Webb measure, but points out his own military service and points out Obama's lack thereof.
"It is typical, but no less offensive that Sen. Obama uses the Senate floor to take cheap shots at an opponent and easy advantage of an issue he has less than zero understanding of," McCain said in the statement. "Let me say first in response to Sen. Obama, running for president is different than serving as president. The office comes with responsibilities so serious that the occupant can't always take the politically easy route without hurting the country he is sworn to defend. Unlike Sen. Obama, my admiration, respect and deep gratitude for America's veterans is something more than a convenient campaign pledge. I think I have earned the right to make that claim."
Full statement after the jump
"It is typical, but no less offensive that Senator Obama uses the Senate floor to take cheap shots at an opponent and easy advantage of an issue he has less than zero understanding of. Let me say first in response to Senator Obama, running for President is different than serving as President. The office comes with responsibilities so serious that the occupant can't always take the politically easy route without hurting the country he is sworn to defend. Unlike Senator Obama, my admiration, respect and deep gratitude for America's veterans is something more than a convenient campaign pledge. I think I have earned the right to make that claim.
"When I was five years old, a car pulled up in front of our house in New London, Connecticut, and a Navy officer rolled down the window, and shouted at my father that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. My father immediately left for the submarine base where he was stationed. I rarely saw him again for four years. My grandfather, who commanded the fast carrier task force under Admiral Halsey, came home from the war exhausted from the burdens he had borne, and died the next day. I grew up in the Navy; served for twenty-two years as a naval officer; and, like Senator Webb, personally experienced the terrible costs war imposes on the veteran. The friendships I formed in war remain among the closest relationships in my life. The Navy is still the world I know best and love most. In Vietnam, where I formed the closest friendships of my life, some of those friends never came home to the country they loved so well.
"But I am running for the office of Commander-in-Chief. That is the highest privilege in this country, and it imposes the greatest responsibilities. It would be easier politically for me to have joined Senator Webb in offering his legislation. More importantly, I feel just as he does, that we owe veterans the respect and generosity of a great nation because no matter how generously we show our gratitude it will never compensate them fully for all the sacrifices they have borne on our behalf.
"Senators Graham, Burr and I have offered legislation that would provide veterans with a substantial increase in educational benefits. The bill we have sponsored would increase monthly education benefits to $1500; eliminate the $1200 enrollment fee; and offer a $1000 annually for books and supplies. Importantly, we would allow veterans to transfer those benefits to their spouses or dependent children or use a part of them to pay down existing student loans. We also increase benefits to the Guard and Reserve, and even more generously to those who serve in the Selected Reserve.
"I know that my friend and fellow veteran, Senator Jim Webb, an honorable man who takes his responsibility to veterans very seriously, has offered legislation with very generous benefits. I respect and admire his position, and I would never suggest that he has anything other than the best of intentions to honor the service of deserving veterans. Both Senator Webb and I are united in our deep appreciation for the men and women who risk their lives so that the rest of us may be secure in our freedom. And I take a backseat to no one in my affection, respect and devotion to veterans. And I will not accept from Senator Obama, who did not feel it was his responsibility to serve our country in uniform, any lectures on my regard for those who did.
"The most important difference between our two approaches is that Senator Webb offers veterans who served one enlistment the same benefits as those offered veterans who have re-enlisted several times. Our bill has a sliding scale that offers generous benefits to all veterans, but increases those benefits according to the veteran's length of service. I think it is important to do that because, otherwise, we will encourage more people to leave the military after they have completed one enlistment. At a time when the United States military is fighting in two wars, and as we finally are beginning the long overdue and very urgent necessity of increasing the size of the Army and Marine Corps, one study estimates that Senator Webb's bill will reduce retention rates by 16%.
"Most worrying to me, is that by hurting retention we will reduce the numbers of men and women who we train to become the backbone of all the services, the noncommissioned officer. In my life, I have learned more from noncommissioned officers I have known and served with than anyone else outside my family. And in combat, no one is more important to their soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen, and to the officers who command them, than the sergeant and petty officer. They are very hard to replace. Encouraging people not to choose to become noncommissioned officers would hurt the military and our country very badly. As I said, the office of President, which I am seeking, is a great honor, indeed, but it imposes serious responsibilities. How faithfully the President discharges those responsibilities will determine whether he or she deserves the honor. I can only tell you I intend to deserve the honor if I am fo rtunate to receive it, even if it means I must take politically unpopular positions at times and disagree with people for whom I have the highest respect and affection.
"Perhaps, if Senator Obama would take the time and trouble to understand this issue he would learn to debate an honest disagreement respectfully. But, as he always does, he prefers impugning the motives of his opponent, and exploiting a thoughtful difference of opinion to advance his own ambitions. If that is how he would behave as President, the country would regret his election."

Good hit. Totally legit.
His shot about Obama’s not serving loses a lot of resonance considering the pack of chickenhawks McCain’s been working with for the past eight years, though. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, etc.

If by working with you mean they are members of the same political party, yes. However, McCain was the one pushing the surge originally, not the White House. Their steady as you go strategy was not working.

Obama's campaign seems to be alot like the schmuck we ended up with as prime minister (Kevin Rudd) campaign last year.
Alot of great lines, alot of vague prromises.
Now we have after 6 months...
Unemployment up.
Taxes up.
Inflation up.
Interest rates up.
Petrol prices up.
Food prices up.
But still alot of spin and vague statements.
My fear for the US is that Obama sounds great but apart from pulling out of Iraq has been very vague on every issue.

It's because most people aren't up for a policy discussion. It is one of those things where people say one thing but do another. They always complain about negative campaigns and such but the campaigns play with what works. This is not everyone, but the majority do want their info filtered through there prism of choice (Fox News, CNN, DailyKos).

I like McCain's handling, he is sufficiently distant fro m GW to not be too tarnished by him, but is still clearly of the same cloth. Its been cleverly handled.
Clinton-Obama has turned into a clown show. Democrats must be thinking, which of our candidates appears to be less of a disaster.
Must you be present to vote in the Senate, can you pre-arrange instructions as to how you wish to vote.

Elections are fun for those that are committed to one candidate or party. The problem is, the process is aimed at a relative handful of people at the center. This isn't a problem in the sense that it's bad (it's good to foster compromise solutions, IMO), but if you're like me and mildly favor one candidate or party, it's a long year. I've made up my mind, but I'm not exactly thrilled with my choice, so I just want the whole thing to end.

The reason I hate politics is because it makes me angry and causes a loss of friends, at least for me. Oftentimes it seems that after a political discussion with a friend, we may say "no hard feelings", but the fact is it is never the same again. I'm pretty much willing to take the blame most of the time when it happens, because of the way I am about such things. I just don't see the point of all these debates and conventions...it just seems very difficult. I mean, just today I was with a group of people and I just had to walk away until they changed the subject.
The reason I feel the way I do about, Obama for istance, has nothing to do with his platform, or what he represents, or whatever. It has everything to do with my perceptions. It isnt about thinking, it is about feeling, which is something I think people who enjoy political discussions just don't seem to get. I don't think about issues, rather, I have feelings about parties and candidates. I have gone from thinking Obama would be more tolerable than Hillary to absolute dislike. Frankly, I *feel* that the man has utter contempt for anyone who isnt part of his social circle or those whom it would be politically inappropriate to have contempt for. When I realized that I might even be better off if Hillary took the white house than any other candidate, I was quite litteraly nauseous, I'm not kidding. Still, I have seriously thought of volunteering for her campaign if I thought she had any real chance of coming out ahead.

Why do the primaries drag on for so long? Surely they could have spaced the contests a bit closer together.
Here in Australia its mandatory voting so the parties aren't after the undecideds rather than the small number of undecideds in certain 'battleground states' that could be arsed to get out and vote.
Alot of people complain about Bush but I'd wager that if all the people who complained had acctually gotten out and voted at the last presidential election he would have lost in a landslide.
Which is why popularity ratings are almost pointless. Sure a majority may disapprove of someone but are they going to acctually go out and turn that dislike into a vote?

Its a whole lot of extra 'Democrat only' media time. While the candidates might disagree, they all agree they are 'better' than the Republican option. This leave a mark for later in the year. Its in aparties interest to drag this out.

What is the deal with Florida and Michigan? Dean said he wasn't going to seat them, back in December, but it looks like he is changing his mind. Plus- not seating two states with a combined electoral count of somewhere in the forties seems pretty suicidal.

It's also pretty silly that two states would push their primaries forward knowing the consequences then complain that the DNC actually followed through and enforced the rules.
It isn't like they aren't going to vote in the general election, they just don't get counted in a party election, which is not a public election for any public seat. Screw em.

Still-- FL is the 3rd biggest state electorally (or the fourth, it goes back and forth between them and texas) and had a primary after Super Tuesday. Which in a not-insane election, so not this year, pretty much means that the candidates will spend 0 times there during the primary, and that they aren't forced to address the states issues. A good example with FL is how Obama has never laid out a space exploration plan, or his plans for NASA. Those are huge deals for Floridians, but since he didn't have to campaign in the state, he could just skip talking about them, since while FL dems support those programs, most dems nationally do not.

Don't worry about it, he is the only candidate willing to have 'direct, presidential level talks without preconditions on day one' with the hive mind. Still, I'm a little suprised he didn't work in at least two 'hope' clauses and three 'change' clauses into the plan. Because we're the ones we've been waiting for. In space.

Slate has a great article on this right now. To sum up:
*Once upon a time the primaries were irrelevant and the candidate was picked in the smoke-filled back rooms of the party's convention.
*Then primaries became long, drawn out fights for the nomination, until the politicos realized that whatever party took the longest lost.
*Add to this that the media (TM) likes to talk about 'momentum' and wants everything wrapped up pretty much by Super Tuesday (or earlier), and for a long time the primary season was over in March, 3 months after the Iowa Caucuses (sure, there were other primaries, but they were foregone conclusions after everyone else dropped out).
This primary season you had an unstoppable force vs. an unmovable object and two primary candidates that planned for very different races, and no tradition of getting out of the way of the front-runner (as the GOP has). And now you have the opposite problem: no one is going to tell Hilary (or Obama) to stand down. Michigan and Florida just add to the jujitsu of it all.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.
I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil |
