I am thinking of using Karios and he gets 8 spells total 4 from life,heaven,light,metal and 4 from the other lores. Any suggestions for what spells to pick? I know some spells are situational but any "must haves"? Here's what I came up with:

Life - Howler wind
Heaven - 2nd sign, vranon's tbolt, comet
metal - Spirit of forge(situational)

Death - steal soul
beasts - bear's anger
shadow - pit of shades(situational)
fire - conflag of doom (combo with 2nd sign cast from other wizards)
wall of fire (situational against mobs)

Any suggestions? I think people would agree vranon's tbolt and comet are no brainers for their usefulness....

Even before picking the spells you need to look at:

What role you will use him in?
Firebase (like I use my slann) with heaps of magic missiles.
Support other troops (movement spells and psych spells)
Combat (Bears anger etc)
Mixture of above

Potentially how many casting dice will he have?
This determines wheter you will use him a primary caster for your force and go for 2 big spells or 3-4 smallers spells. Casting costs of the spells will be critical. So no point in taking all spells that are hard to cast. My favorites are the 8+ to cast 2d6 st4 magic missiles. They massacre light troops, and can knock of a couple of heavy cav,

well I will have total of 10 PD from him, base and 2 L2 tzeentch wizards with possibly Heaven. I will cast Boon of tzeentch for d3+1 extra - since he gets +2 to cast i can try to roll 1 die for the boon. I think I will use kairos for mostly damage. here is my 2 lists (heads):

Head1:
Drain life (on heavy armored ones)
beast cowers(against heavy cav armies)
pit of shades(against ogres or other low I units)
wall of fire(against big mobs)
Conflag of doom (if have 2nd sign setup from other wizards... this could get nasty with re-rolls)


head 2:
howler wind (against shooty units)
cleansing flare (against gen. units)
guardian light (combat help)
2nd sign
Uranon's T bolt(ind. char picker)
comet( mass dest. against mobs)
spirit of forge(against heavy armor armies)

Sorry for leaving mid sentence, one of the consultants came in and wanted my consult room. :(

He gets to pick his spells doesn't he (don't have book with me ATM)

Also what will the rest of the army look like and at what points?
Heavy combat units love the shadows unit mvt spell.

Your going for higher casting spells- So you should be able to attempt to cast 3 of them per turn if you get Boon off (I'd have it as priority number 1 to dispel as it gives you too much power in the phase)
But the more dice you roll the greater the chance of a miscast.

Essentially it all comes down to your style of play.
With my 4th and 2nd gen slaans (closest I can get to Karios) with extra spells and extra power/dispel dice I love to be very aggressive, and never want the slaan in combat so invariably go for fire for the sheer number of great magic missiles.

Heroes:
2 X tzeentch herald with master of sorcery (Haven) = 280

Core:

15 blood letters w/music + standard =198
15 daem. w/music + standard = 198
15 daem. OR bloodletters w/music= 185

3 screamers (90) or 10 furies(120) or get 10 more bloodletters/daemonettes


Rare:
6 flamers = 210
6 flamers = 210


I didn't want to be all shooty since that would be kinda boring but I just love magic and don't want to be out magicked and imo 10pd is not that bad. So I suppose I will be using more damaging spells than support..
