Tweaking my guard list a bit, wanted to make it all guard, and save the inquisitor stuff for bigger games.. and one big platoon instead of 2 smaller ones.. they don't need to be near the command squad now that they all use a vox network. I may try and remove some tank upgrades so I can tweak the platoon command squad to have 4 plasmas. They don't need a vox thanks to the officer's LD and I can have 4 special weapons in the unit, so that'll make another great 5 man suicide drop squad like the vets

also moved the heavy weapons to an anti tank squad so they can concentrate their fire and the troops can move if they need to, without giving up a lascannon shot. They're all drop troops, so I can choose to drop em in or start on the table depending on the game, but the drawback is I just roll once for the whole platoon so if I roll bad for deep striking the bulk of my men could be stuck circling around in their valkeryies while everything else gets blown away. I think I read that I can just have certain squads in the platoon deep strike and not others, but that seems kinda like it might not be right...

Get rid of all the Vox Casters first of all, you should be able to fit all your men under the leadership bubble of the HQ (24" Diameter circle is large.)

Drop the Lascannon squad, it just makes an easy target for the enemy, stick the lascannons in the Infantry Platoons instead.
You also have 4 Lascannons in this army, at 2000 points, once those are gone, 14 value armour is going to roll all over you.

Also, the number of men you have (81) for an army of points that size is far too few, drop the two Grenadier squads and just grab an extra platoon.

Your tanks are ok, but who ever you fight will probably aim for the demolisher right away, so keep it protected. Might be an idea to take off the smoke launchers and the search light from the Russ and Demolisher, if they fire their smoke, they aren't firing their guns, and if they need to be protected from something, they should be protecting themselves with their guns, or the platoons should be doing it.

actually, I started out with the lascannons in the squads and no voxes. I always ran into problems because for one, the unit can't move. If it moves, I can't shoot the lascannon. If I decide a unit is getting too close, I may want to back up, then that shot is lost. Or what if I need to capture an objective? that's not too easy with a gunline that's only able to move 6" at a time. And in an anti tank squad, I have 3 50/50 chances to score a good hit on something big. Concentrating their fire helps a lot, but shooting peacemeal 1 cannon at a time doesn't always cut it, because I may need to turn the other guns in that squad against some units that are closing in. Since I started playing this way, the army has become a lot more flexable for me. And there's usually at least 1 or 2 decent pieces of terrain in my deployment area that I can hide the hw squad in. And with units moving around more, the voxes come in handy because they might move out of the LD bubble. It also allows me to do something else with the platoon cmd squad besides just stand there and provide leadership. they can have 4 assault weapons going, may as well try and use em.

My plan though is to eventually add another platoon for bigger games. At the moment, this list uses all of my tanks and almost all my men.. don't have enough models for a 2nd platoon yet. Well, I can do 2 platoons with 2 squads each... but I wanted to try 1 big platoon here. And anyway nowadays with bigger games being Apocalypse, I just mix in other loyalist stuff like my marines or inquisition.

For the tanks, yeah I'm thinking of stripping off some upgrades to free up some more points. I could use the unused 2nd platoon's cmd squad as a 3rd unit of vets if I can get enough points freed up.

Why are you moving? You're a Guard player?

The above list is... not a Guard list. Heavy Weapon-less Squads and Vox Casters. And Grenadiers. Wow...

what's wrong with grenadiers if I want 2 units of stormtroopers but don't have the elite slots open? Would I be better off just using those 2 units as a platoon of 2 squads?

And yes I move my guard when they need to move. Sorry but gunline is just plain boring. I don't need to win at all costs, I need to play a fun game

Plus I just don't have enough heavy weapon models to go around, so that's also why they're in their own unit instead of spread out.

So then what..? turn the grenadiers into a platoon? Doing that would use every model in my collection. And since this is for a game I'm playing this weekend, there won't be time or cash available to add any more troops anytime soon. I have a total of 4 lascannon teams for heavy weapons, so at most I could just have 4, 2 of the squads would be heavyweaponless

and what's the big deal with voxs really? it's a small amt of points and what do I do if the guy goes for an easy kill to wipe out a 5 man platoon cmd squad? I've been using voxes for a while now and they've always come in very handy.

Necros, H.B.M.C. is treating your list as just that: a list, unit names and point costs written on paper (or whatever). You, however, as the player, need to think of how you're going to find the models to represent what you have in the list, so naturally if you don't have the time or money to make significant changes, nothing much we can say is going to be of any use to you. In the long-term (but not too long-term, ofc, what with a possible new dex) though, H.B.M.C.'s advice is sound.

Well what I used to do was keep those same tanks. I didn't have voxes at first. For the troops i had that plain hq, 2 platoons w/ 2 las/plas squads each. It came out to around 1700 pts so I added an inquisitor and vindicare, both of which rarely did much. So, I recently added those 2 units of death korps grenadiers, so I was hoping to replace the inquisition stuff with them.

I noticed when I played, as stuff advanced it would get harder and harder to decide if I wanted to shoot the 1 lascannon at a tank, or dump all my shots on the infantry that's closing in. So I started doing the anti tank squad thing instead and I saw a bigger improvement. Instead of shooting peacemeal like that, I was able to focus 3 shots on 1 target and among the 3 shots, usually one of em gets a good pen hit. This frees up my troops to take out other troops as they approach. If I need to do a fighting withdrawl because they get closer, I still have that option and don't lose my lone lascannon shot. And there are some scenarios where the gunline thing just doesn't work for me, I need to get off my butt and go get some objectives. So with that in mind I also take the vox network because there are times when a unit may end up leaving the LD bubble for some reason

Anyway, I also took the grenadiers because I wanted the chimeras. I know I can give them to a command squad instead so I can do that if I make the grenadiers be extra troops. Another thing that has worked well for me is just the amt of tanks I have, the guy usually just doesn't know which one to shoot and if he takes one out, I have a backup that can finish the job and hit him back harder.

Anyway that's my reasoning behind the list I do plan to add more troops, but the time and money factor are against me right now. I'm hoping to add a lot of conscripts as my next big unit.
