Put your cursor over the MEQ in your post and wait for the little box to appear.

Nifty, innit?

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

MEqs: Marine Equivalents. Specifically, anything with a 3+ save, mostly '4s' for their BS/WS/S/T/W/damage, and some kind of leadership bonus/bubble. So, SM and CSM in all their 51 flavors, Necrons, and sometimes Sisters of Battle (though I think there's some debate about this one).

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

You're welcome!

In the future, check out the terminology section. It really tries to clarify whatever technical language we use here on DD (though I'm pretty sure there's no entry for "Hurr!" yet).

If you type in 'Spase Mareinz', 'HURR!' or 'Spase Mareinz! HURR!' it should just bring up a box that says 'Space Marines', no matter how obvious it is.

You know I've been trying to get my friend interested in 40k for years now. A month or so ago he started to crack.

Got him to go into a GW and check out the armies, which is huge because he used to refuse to even go NEAR GW stores. So when I was done telling him about them all, I asked what he'd play if I could convince him to start an army.

He responded saying he wasn't going to start one, but if he did, he'd play the "Marine guys".

I immediately agreed with all his points about it being too expensive and time consuming and have never brought the subject up again.

Tis better to keep a friend and not play 40k with him, then to make him into a MEQ and start down the long winding road of loathing and bitterness.

Don't get me wrong... To each his own and all... BUT

I don't get the MEQ hating. It's intense and wide-spread.

I don't see any problems with MEQ's in relation to any other force.
I would almost bet that, for each problem listed about any individual MEQ army, there's a bitch about a non-MEQ army.

Hate the "almost everyone has a 3+ save or better" about SM's?
I hate the "This marker means you have to do the hokey pokey or your armor save fails" of Tau.

Yes. I WAS being sarcastic.
It was just a fun, playful type, though. Not an argumentative sarcasm.

I was serious about not understanding the MEQ hating, though.

The sink.

I also don't get the MEQ hate. Sure a lot of people play marines. And sure they have 3+ saves and good stats. Yet they still aren't considered to be "top armies" by some players. I believe the top 3 are supposedly Tau, Eldar, and Nids. <---- No marines there!

And c'mon nids = I hate having to fight against 8 MC's.
eldar = holo fields
Tau = all my guns are better than yours.

MEq-hating is not in any way based on power levels. It's been a long time since Marines were anywhere near the best army--what, 3rd ed. Rhino rush? It's just that overuse makes them boring.

Somewhere in south-central England.

CSMs are a top army, judging by UK GT results anyway.

The reasons for MEq hating are three:

1. There are just too many marines armies. If you play pick-up games you have to play marines half the time.

2. This plus the other MEqs and the effect of the 40K armour save system, means that all armies have to carry as much AP3+ firepower as possible. This is the real reason for min-maxing las/plas squads. It hurts vehicles and rarer troops types lile Tau Suits who are meant to be a bit special but end up being more vulnerable.

3. GW publishes too much marines stuff generally, in terms of figures and books, which is bad news if you are not a marines fan.

To call it hating is a bot strong, though a lot of players think the metagame and hobby would benefit if there were a lot fewer marines around than now.

On the subject of MEQ hating, I agree that it is mainly because they are played so often, in a similar vein that people wearing the default armour (and also hayubasa) in Halo 3 get paid out, because they are going with the flow. If they were to try something new, then they would be accepted.

However, now that the 5th Ed codex is out, everyone will be collecting orks, which was to be my next army :(

To hate something because it is common is silly. Do I hate birds? Do I hate bees? Do I hate the birds and the bees? No, no and no.

They are not hated.

They are disliked not because they are common but because too many people choose to play them, spoiling the flavour of the metagame.

What would birdlife be like if everywhere there were green parakeets and no sparrows, robins and so on?

TFG usually plays marines. And I hated Micheal Jordan and the Chicago Bulls because everybody else loved them. I play csm, and the 2 guys that I used to play with most played necrons and marines. That got boring fast. That's why I'm starting eldar. Everyone having different styles of armies makes things more interesting.
