Off the shoulder of Orion

I recently got to play my first apoc game, and it was a huge one. A local tourney had planned a huge game for the evening session, so I fronted up with a force of Orks and a few flyers and warmachines. It was a three way battle, which was quite ambitious and meant we only got through 3 turns, but it was still huge fun.

The three sides were Imperial (Guard, Space Marines, Sisters), Chaos/Orks, and Xenos (Eldar, Tau, Necrons, Dark Eldar). There was literally hundreds of infantry and dozens of vehicles. The warmachines present were:
Two Warhound Titans, Banblade and an Eldar Phantom Titan. I added two Ork fight-bombers, a Stompa, and my newly (nearly) finished mega bomber.

There were no strategic assets, but each team captain was issued a vortex grenade. The Imperial side rolled lowest and set up first:
The Warhound

Another one!

A serious gun-line

Chaos/Orks went next - my only deployment was two battle wagons and the Stompa as my speed freaks and flyers were in reserve
Battle wagons advance!

Stompa

An overview of the battlefield

So..many..guns..

The Xenos deployed way back from the front lines as the Imperials and Chaos/Ork sides squared off. We should have been suspicious about what the Xenos were up to..

Turn 1

First turn - we went first and the Stompa did well by blasting two structure points off the Baneblade. The Chaos tanks opened up with everything they had on the Warhound to our front...to no effect. Void shields and tough armour shrugged off the shots. The return fire from the Imperial lines blasted great holes in the Chaos armour and infantry - not a great start..

The Xenos moved forward cautiously but did manage to rail-gun a Vindicator which blew up spectacularly, destroying the Land Raider next to it and tipping out the Imperial General (a terminator Lord) and his retinue!

Turn 2 - Reserves! I immediately flew in the Mega Bomber and Flyers as the Chaos tanks again concentrated on the Warhound (to little effect)
Mega Bomber!

Seeing all those Imperial forces so neatly lined up, the Megabomber and fighters flew the length of the table for a bomb run. The Megabomber expended its entire bomb load, raining 3 bomb templates and two mega bombs (7' template) on the foe. The fighta bombers added their rokkits and guns to the mayhem.

When the smoke cleared three squads of Imperial guard, three heavy weapons teams, and a handful of sisters were gone. The tanks fared better, with only an immobilised Chimera, a stunned speeder, and another speeder minus its flamer. The Megabomer gunners strafed as they flew by, mowing down the guard squad that exited the Chimera (ho ho!)
A lucky shot from a lascannon blew the Baneblade cannon away and fire from the Stompa damaged its drive train.

No one even shot at the flyers, which happily cruised by

The Imperial turn saw more Chaos tanks blasted away, and in a superb shot from the second Warhound, two Wraithlords vaporised and both C'tan wounded. Then the deepstrikers arrived - squads of Storm troopers and Terminators landed in the Xenos rear and took a terrible toll on the Tau and Dark Eldar armour

The assault phase saw the penitent Engines charge the C'tan - a brave but doomed sally

The Xenos moved forward again and began to menace the Imperial flank. They seemed so far away from our lines...

And then their reserves arrived and it all went horribly, horribly wrong...
First, 2000 points of pain arrived in the form of a Phantom Titan

And then 4 Monoliths deepstruck into the Chaos deployement zone/objective (yeah, we should have seen that one coming)

The Phantom went about stripping the Warhound's shelds as the Xenos armour moved in..( wait...are those Mega gargants behind that Phantom?)

Turn 3
I raced the flyers in again as the Xenos rampaged across the field, hoping to do some damage as my Chaos allies dashed themselves uselessly against the Warhound

The Imperial flank was now in total collapse

My last roll of the dice was to run my speedfreaks into the Monolith surprise and hope for the best..
Hooray! The cavalry!

I made a quick pact with one of the monolith commanders - you don't shoot the Stompa in the back, and I will concentrate on the Imperials (and not show you what a titan CC weapon will do to you). He agreed, but in typical Orky fashion, as the Stompa moved away it left him a small gift...

The Ork flyers did their part, mowing down infantry and blasting away a Demolisher and Leman Russ

In the assault phase the Ork HQ managed to immobilise the Monolith menacing the objective and saving the day

The Chaos assualt finally reached the Warhound and our objective, but rubbish rolling saw the Warhound laugh off the attacks and our terminators scatter off the board..

In the final moves the Imperials managed to secure one objective as the Xenos destroyed their flank

More to come...

The Megabomber gunners ranged unmolested, firing at will
Cop dis!

The battle was well and truly on - pity we ran out of time

In the last Xenos turn a Monolith deployed a squad of destroyers, taking the Chaos objective and snatching victory (curses!) as their general teleported close to the Warhound and threw his vortex grenade..

...which fell short..

The Phantom felled the second warhound..

And with that the game ended..

Final result - Xenos victory, Chaos a close second, and Imperials a distant third.

An excellent game and lots of fun - next time I think we will just run two sides, but this was still a great intro in apoc.

Cheers,

Gordy

Akira,

I'm Auckland based but the tourney was run in Whangarei, about 2 hours north. I need to find a club down here that runs regular apoc games as I am a total convert.

Hi CoffeeOrk

The battlewagons are based of Italeri 1/35th kits - the Alligator and Water Buffalo (WW2 LVTP's) - I believe the kits are still available

Very nice job on those. Really fighting with the design of my wagons ATM. I may borrow alittle from those for my wagons.

I dig the paint-job on that Warhound (the white and gold one). It truly does look like something that the Imperium would use!

Nice battle and nice battle report! Can't say I'm a fan of 3-way games - people tend to gang up on the third player, or one player hangs back and lets the other two duke it out, firing potshots then taking advantage later [see xenos side].

But it looks like y'all had fun! Grats on a good game!
