What to say, what to say. . .

I'm on several boards already under this username, so most likely in your travels you've seen me before. My name is Nathaniel; I'm a SGT in the Texas National Guard, just got out of the Active US Army after 5 1/2 years in and two combat deployments with the 1st Cavalry Division. I'm 32, a Scorpio, my blood type is A+, my favorite color is grey, my favorite month is November, my favorite season is winter, and I have one tattoo. I'm unmarried, have no kids, and patently don't want either. I'm an Army brat, so I don't have a "hometown" or a place "where I'm from", but I grew up in Germany so I'm not exactly normal as per the typical American standard.

The basics are pretty simple: I've been gaming since 1998, but I didn't get into 40K until 2005 when I could finally afford an army of my own. Right after my first tour in Iraq ended, I picked up on the Imperial Guard (being in Armor kind of made it a given) and built the 10th Friedland Armored Cavalry Regiment, with which I played the Medusa V Campaign under Task Force Serpent. I played Guard locally for about a year, usually against my section SGT's Dark Angels, and then deployed to Iraq again. This second tour, I picked up on my true love: Chaos Space Marines. I built the 88th Grand Company, Black Legion "Hellrazors" over there, and played them almost exclusively throughout the tour, against Dark Angels, Tau, Necrons, and Eldar, flying the banner of the Speartip Alliance. Just before coming back, I went ahead and purchased the seeds that will become the Nova Devils, a Raven Guard successor Chapter, once the 5th Edition SM Codex is released and construction can be completed. I've been back in the States since January 2008, and find I have less time to play here than I did in Iraq, which should speak volumes for how much sleep I missed in 15 months.

I don't know how active I'll be here, considering I'm already tied in with Bolter & Chainsword, Speartip Alliance, Task Force Serpent, Austin Miniatures Minions, and I mod the 40K Radio Freebootaz forum on top of everything else. Nevertheless, I will pop in from time to time and take a gander at the place. You're highly recommended by people whose word means something to me, and it's a pleasure to meet you all.

Quite an intimidating intro, you have covered everything so all that is left to say is Welcome to Dakka! If you have any painted forces then we would love to see them in the painting and modeling forum. Hope you enjoy your time here!

I'll get some pics up shortly. Fair warning, though: painting is my least favorite thing about the hobby, so I'm extremely slow with it and I'm nowhere near done. I can sniff glue all day and build models like a machine, but put a paintbrush in my hand and I turn into a simpering wreck.

I'm going to try posting a couple of articles on painting miniatures quicky. Hopefully some of those can help you.

Welcome to the fold. It's good to see another old active army guy around these parts.

I'm actually playing out of Killeen myself these days. I mostly game down in Austin though at Battleforge Games off of Anderson Lane. I'm sure you've seen some of my work over on AMM as well.

You should definitely head over to the Dakka Gamers Catalog and add yourself.

BTW, what was your MOS? I'm an old 13F myself. And since you were cav, what Brigade/Battalion were you in?

I live in Killeen, and occasionally make it down to play in Austin. Fuel's a killer these days, though, so I'm trying to stay more local and only make the drive south once a month. All the lads are off in school, but I play at Battlefield on Stan Schlueter Loop and at America's Heroes off Rancier. In Austin I'll play whereever's running a tournament, usually Dragon's Lair but I've done business at Ninja Pirate and BFG as well, so I'm easy and have no particular "favorite" store to support.

I was a 19K as Active duty, in 2-12 Cav, 2BCT, 1st Cav; in the TNG, I'm a 25B with 36th DSTB, 36ID.

I was 1-82FA 1BCT most of the time I was on Hood. Though I spent a lot of time with different units, as is the way of the FO.

I haven't done much gaming locally. I just have never found a good time/night/store combo yet locally. I usually try and hit Battleforge on a thursday if at all possible though.

Welcome to dakka.

Very curious about gaming in the military, especially overseas deployments.
Much hassle getting your armies there, buying armies there, assembling/paiting and especially gaming?

The IG I shipped over in one of the milvans as "NBC room equipment"; once we unpacked, I then spent about three days re-gluing arms and heads back on. GW US and Forge World both mail to APO addresses, so that was how I acquired Chaos. Paint was a real problem, because you can't mail spray cans and we decided we'd rather die than hand primer all these guys, so we skipped the paint part, but glue was readily available from the various PXs, as were cutting tools for sprues. When the time came to come back, I just boxed them all up and mailed them via the APO.

Playing was a bit of a challenge, but since three of the four of us who did play were all in one room, it wasn't that hard to get together after mission and play a turn or two depending on the time. Since there's no such thing as a "day off" over there unless you're a civilian or a pogue, it would usually be the case of all of us dragging ass in at 2200 or thereabouts, doing a turn, and then crashing. A 2000 point game would take us about three days to complete. Every so often, someone would come by to watch us play or marvel at our makeshift gaming table (a 6' x 4' plank of plywood as a platform, braced against the wall on top of a countertop and supported by a chairback). I had my templates come over with the IG, but we had to buy a metal ruler and a cloth measuring tape locally.
