Hi all,
I'm finally giving in and picking up WFB.
As the overall range really appeals to me aesthetically, I'm gonna try to build up a Caledor army (I love those DP models).

Anyhow, this is my first go at a 1k list (figure I can build from here):

HEROES
Noble - 138
-barded steed, lance, dragon armour, shield, guardian phoenix

Mage - 165
- lvl 2, silver wand, dispell scroll

CORE
21x Spearmen - 214
- full command

SPECIAL
5x Dragon Princes - 200
- full command

5x Dragon Princes - 180
- full command, drakemaster with biting blade

RARE
1x RBT - 100

Total - 197.

Again, the focus was on the DPs. Model count is really low, I know.
I'm not sure how WFB tends to play out at this points level.
I have pretty much no models as of yet, so theoretically, any changes can be made.
Any and all tips/advice much appreciated!

could really do with an eagle in there for wm hunting or charge diverting / flanking.
Spearmen good in 21 wirks well in 3x7 ranks but maybe drop the champion and keep at 20 as the mage should join these to make 21. Don't bother with biting blade in dragon princes as has lance is better. On the noble i prefere the helm that gives +1 save with re-roll (making 1+ with reroll) especially in small games. Maybe even put the noble on the eagle with armour of caledor?

Yeah, the reroll is really good for a mounted noble.

I like the list otherwise for 1k. Should make for some fun games. (I assume you meant *9*97 ;-)

Good call on the biting blade....I keep forgetting about the lance and that you can't interchange weapons between combat rounds.
So I should drop the champ upgrade and another spearelf to make the unit 20?
I'd actually been vacillating between the Guardian Phoenix and Helm of Fortune. They were both the same points, but I wasn't sure if it were better to have the reroll or the ward save. I suppose in retrospect, the reroll in this particular case is better (noble would have 2+ re-rollable this way, right?)

I kind of agree about getting an eagle, though I don't know where I would pull points out of to get one. I could pull the command off of one of the DP units, but would it be worth it?

Hrm. Command on the DPs is kind of a tough call at this level. Basically, DPs without banner are shock troops but won't give up banner VPs. The banner is +1 more CR, but makes the DPs more expensive inf you lose them (especially if the banner is captured!). If you plan to use them to just support your infantry, the banner is probably unnecessary. If the DPs can flank a ranked unit, you only start down 1 without a banner (+1 Flank v. +1 Outnumber, +1 Banner), even without a unit engaging the target's front. Casualties should more than make up for that.

One big reason to take the banner is the Illyrian banner (move through forests).

If you can free up points for an eagle by dropping both DP banners, I would probably do it as the eagle is good for taking WM crews (WMs are a threat to your DPs and infantry) and march blocking.

I would get a spearmen champion since your mage is probably going to hang out there.

Hm. I suppose I haven't completely figured out with what strategy I would run this list - whether it would be best to run the spear block in the center with DPs on either flank, or with the spears out to the side.

I could free up the points for an eagle by dropping both DP standards and a couple of spearelves...could drop the spearelves down to 17 with full command instead (run it 6x3 with mage).

IIRC, that would put me roughly at a net gain of 3 more points.

I'll have to look into this later this evening.


Another idea could be to scrap one unit of DPs for more spears or something, though that would change the dynamic of the force quite a bit.

What if I ran one of the DP units without any command at all? That would be exactly 50 points freed up for an eagle.

well you could drop the command on the Dps but then that leaves them pretty weak for the main focus of your army. its fine to dot hat to archers or something who don't need it in the first place but if you want your army to revolve around the powerful Dragon Princes then i suggest keping them with full command. if you plan on them being able to win combats and stuff you will want the extra attack and the plus one to com,bat res. and i think the mscian make sit easier to rally right...can't quite recall but its nessecary for any unit that you want to fight with, especially fort the points. hoestly not to say its wrong or anyhting but i find that eagles aren't that great. well, they are but not at the price of hurting your other units.

Looks good. I like the 1k list, though I agree that sneaking an Eagle in there would help.

No-command DPs are still quite viable; I usually drop the champion before losing the banner, but going without the banner can be a good choice as outlined above. Even going just Musician can be excellent as it keeps you from losing on ties (and wins it if your opponent lacks the musician) and gives +1Ld when Rallying. Another nice option if you play against Wood Elves at all would be to take the champion in one unit and give him the item that makes all the unit's attacks magical. And of course the Ellyrian Banner is outstanding. Overall you have a number of good options with DPs.

The 2k list looks nice, though I think a BSB would be a great addition.

My main concern is that this list looks very light in numbers. Do ya'll think this list could do alright?

yeah it is light on numbers but that is what happens to the high elves..there aren't many of their race left. i'm just a little surprised that you don't use any of the cool special units the High elves offer....swordmasters, phoenix guard, white lions. i don't know how long a block of spearmen will hold, i suppose it would depend on the army you are facing. i assume all the Dps have full command by there number of points. i think it would do all right..but i have one question. why is it important to be able to have magic attacks?

Yeah...I thought about bringing in some other units, but I wanted to make a Caledor-centric list. Depending on how this list plays out, I could change. I vacillated for a while about the 3rd unit of DPs (and yes, full command on those guys) over say a block of Swordmasters, but in the end opted for more cavalry.

RE: magic attacks...it wasn't really a decision made with a specific goal in mind...I just had sixteen points left over and didn't know what to do with them, and saw the Amulet of Light. I have no strong attachment to that particular item.

I think for the most part I'll be playing against Dwarves (couple of friends and I are all starting up together, none of us have anything yet, really) and Chaos.

The Amulet of Light is clutch because when facing undead or any other army with a large number of ethereal units or units vulnerable only to magical attacks, your entire DP unit can now hurt them instead of simply praying to whittle them down by combat res alone.

I like the list, especially for a Caledor themed army. If you need an easy way to bring the list to 2250 or 2500 points, I'd suggest making one of the mages a dragon mage. 3 good units of cavalry plus a dragon or two makes for an ugly flank attack for pretty much any opponent.

Owing to insomnia and general "hey, this idea sounds fun", I also came up with another vastly different list.
Figured I'd try out a list based around the Mongol army - so lots of light cavalry and lots of shooting.

So except for the mounted hero and Silver Helms, (and great eagle) everything else can shoot something. Hopefully I could keep the reavers from combat and just have them harrassing the enemy with bowfire. Just a quick idea that I was tossing around in my head. No magic, though I was hoping this list would be fast enough and shooty enough.
