Hello!

With 5th I plan on making a Tau list, so obviously this is my first attempt at it. How's it look?

Note: Should the need arise, I can place a few meltas here and there for anti-armor.

I personally think Tau will have a tougher time in 5th. With your list, you've got a lot of units, so you'll give up all kinds of kill points, while at the same time you only have three scoring units, which won't last long if your opponent doesn't want them to. I'd say beef up your troops, at the least.

Of course, the Tau don't exactly have the best Troop choices in the game, but doesn't it hurt you more by fielding more of the "crappier" Firewarriors/Kroot instead of sharpening your offensive capabilities with other more powerful units? I believe that getting overly frightened and fielding lots of Troops just because they're the only scoring ones is a bit silly, especially since if you're afraid of your units dying, fielding more of them doesn't exactly solve the problem, you simply avoid it.

I think more of my Troops as Engineers in warfare, the "real" soldiers make way for the Engineers and secure the area. Also in 40k my non-troops can always contest the enemies points in worst case scenarios.

Also 12 KP isn't that much?

Shas'el = 117
Plasma, M.Pod, T.Array, HW MultiT, 1x Shield G.

This guy is illegal, he has 4 hardpoints, remove the shield generator he should be hiding in a crisis team.

>>>>>>>>ELITE

3x Crisis = 200
Team leader(flamer & HW MultiT), bonded, plasma, M.Pod, MultiT.

Add a shield drone for thos inevitable S8+ shots.

6x Stealth = 250
TLeader, bonded, 1x Markerdrone, 3x Gundrones

Drop the gun drones. they are only a liability, easy to kill and will count for moral checks. If you drop them you will have enough points for a shield drone for each Crisis team. I would also recomend dropping these guys for some more kroot and Fire Warriors, less KP and more reliability.

>>>>>>>>TROOP

12xKroot = 105
Shaper

Good, find a way to bring two.

10xFireWarriors = 115
T.Leader, Bonded

Good, but isnt there a 5pt leader upgrade that gives you the same stuff but no stat increase? Also give your leader a markerlight and HW target lock

1x Devilfish = 115 (Will be used by FW)
Distrupt P, MultiT, SMS

If your going to do this give it the Array and Decoy launchers (less usefull in 5th, but still pretty nice)

6x Pathfinder = 87
TeamL, bonded

Do you really need team leader and Bonding? They dont score, and with only 6 T3 4+ save models they are going to get completly wiped out by the mid point of the game anyways, may as well distribute the points somewhere else more usefull and survivable.

Also your Kill points are more than 12. HQ, Fast and HS are worth 2, Elites are worth 3, and troops are 1. I read 24 assuming transports don't give any up when destroyed.

The pathfinder Team Leader is a great place to put a hardwired target lock.

Yeah, he had a Shield Drone, but then I upraded it to a Generator because I had a few points over, forgot that the had the Array when I upgraded it (wrote it late at night :S ).
Well he he can still JSJ and will get a 4+ cover save most of the time in any case, plus he can easily join other units, so the inv. save isn't really needed in any case.

Kroeger wrote:

Did consider it, but it's a total of 30p for both Crisis units, didn't know where to get those points.

Well the GD are basically there as shields, only cost 1/3 of a Stealth suit and only have a slightly crappier save.
Also they give off some pretty good firepower, but maybe another Crisis team would be better? Adding a few more Firewarriors... I dunno, with a transport they're expensive and don't really have much punch. You only buy them "because they're Troops", basically :S

Kroeger wrote:

I did consider swapping a Shaper out for 4 Kroot... also I don't know where to get the points for another unit.

Kroeger wrote:Good, but isnt there a 5pt leader upgrade that gives you the same stuff but no stat increase? Also give your leader a markerlight and HW target lock

Nope, only 5p Team Leader Upgrades for suits, sadly.
The FW are also mounted in Fishies, so they won't be standing around too much to use that single markerlight, heck the hefty sum of that single unit with the markerlight comes up to a whooping 35p, I think the Pathfinders are better suited for this i.m.o.

Kroeger wrote:

While the Array is a good idea, the DecoyL is sorta nice, even in 5th (heck might even be nicer).

Well I edited an old list, slipped my mind that below half of 6 is 2 and what's 2 Pathfinders gonna do in any case? That frees up 15p per squad.

Kroeger wrote:

If I have the points over, that's 30p total. Plus I'll only be abe to fire the cannons if I move 6" (meaning not too often in any case).

Ah okay, I read the rules for KP in a blurry scan and parts were unreadable. But meh, KP don't bother me too much. To chicken out with lots of crappy Troops isn't my style.

Okay this list is miles better than the first one. HQ looks good but don't listen to Kroeger, the shas'el in your first list wasn't illegal, they can have as much stuff as they want to but have to have AT LEAST 3 hard points filled. Elites look good, creative use of stealth markerlights, let me know how they work out. Troops are fine. Fast attack I'm worried about because I haven't seen a rule for 5th that lets dedicated transports carry other units, just land raiders and falcons. Heavy support is good, but switch SMS to drones. SMS aren't defensive so they should almost never be used. The drones on the other hand can launch turn 1 and go contest objectives or create speedbumps and be annoying in general. Drones for the fish too which is A) more useful and B) about 70 points cheaper. With the extra points you can buy a bodyguard for one of the HQ's or 4 more pathfinders or more stealth suits with markerdrones or a mix thereof.

Noted. Thanks.

I still don't know what I'll do with 89 points, I guess I'll go with a bodyguard suit and a few uprades here and there :S

No it's okay, I've read that part in the new rulebook. Here, I'll show you:

Check your Tau Empire codex again; it specifies that you must fill three hardpoints. Not more, not less. You may take as much Battlesuit Wargear as you want, but nothing in that section takes up a hardpoint.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

You're right, I never made the distinction between "battlesuit wargear list" and "Battlesuite armory"
