Just came from the latest movie from Mr. M. Night Shyamalayadingdongorwhateverhescalled.
I have two Words for you.
The Movie was BORING. And when it tried not to be BORING it SUCKED!.
pew, got that out of my system. This may just sound like a lot of trolling to you, but I just couldn't bring it over me to really like the movie. And there's not even a real Shyamalan endiing.
Spoiler:
Well the Trees did it. Why only here? Oh look, it happens in Paris too
To be honest since sixth sense his movie have lacked the pop at the end or even an underlying tension to keep you interested throughout.
Unbreakable went nowhere.
The villiage, acctually didn't mind it having seen it a second time.
Signs had a pathetic ending.
Still want to go though.
Vote +1 for lamest name of a movie for 2008.

6. Sense was really cool, and I totally dig Unbreakable. Alotugh that may be because I'm a total comic nerd Signs was really anoying in the end. And the village just wasn't...well, it wasn't really much of anything
I must disagree. I absolutely loved Signs. Six Sense was good in a total paradigm shift way. Village for me sucked so badly I haven't watched a Shim film since.

Just remembered Lady in the water- which I didn't even bother to go and see.
Also noted in the trailer mark Wahlberg using 'whom' correctly in a sentence instead of 'who' when talking to the train guards.
Go go grammar!
I just get the feeling he needs to get someone else to collaborate on writing to either give an ending that really pops or speed the story up a hell of alot.

Shyamalan has quickly disappeared up his own butt. The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable were both good movies. They were refreshing because we suddenly had a guy making films through major studios with heavy plotting and an emphasis on suspense and story telling just like an old fashioned Hitchcock thriller.
But subsequent efforts have lost that novelty, while Shyamalan has become increasingly self-conscious and self satisfied, his style has almost become a parody of itself… and story boarded to the point where the actors become like robots jammed into the scenes.
There’s no doubting the guy has talent but he really needs a serious shake up.
“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

Or as my friend calls it (riffing on the "It is so spooky!" thing going on): What's Happening?!
Sad to hear it's apparently a dud, I was planning on seeing it on Sunday. Still might, though my enthusiasm has just been shot in the foot :S
Here's my Shlamalamadingdong rundown:
Sixth Sense - saw it years later, thought it was cool but knew what to expect
Unbreakable - also a cool concept, but felt it fizzled a bit into its conclusion
Signs - has its moments, but "pathetic ending" is about right
The Village - would never have seen until I asked to have it ruined for me, at which point I rented and enjoyed it
Land in the Water - haven't seen it, sort of want to for the fairy tale aspect of it
Thanks for the spoiler tags Dogma, just for those who havent seen it yet :(
Armies Owned: Iron Warriors, Tau
Undead Titan Log Malfred: Terminator Armor has always had room for extra boobage.
Drake_Marcus: It's true- that's why the Space Wolves love termie armour so much. The whole "bear" thing they've got going on is just a thinly veiled cover-up of their huge, hairy cleavage.
Personally I'm not a fan of Shayamalan. I've seen most of his films and either guessed the 'twist' or absolutely hated the 'twist', thinking it rendered the whole film pointless. Anyway, I saw the trailer for 'The Happening' and thought it looked pretty cool so was going to go and see it. following this thread, I probably won't. Any chance you can send a PM to me explaining the twist in this one so that I can just completely ignore the film for ever more?
I just post it here, in case anybody else wants to read it.
Spoiler:
Somewhere in the first 15 minutes they explain that the toxic which gripped apparantly the entire east coast, somehow deactivates the humas sense for self preservation. So basically, everybody just starts killing themselves. At first they think it's an act of terrorism, but soon they come too the conclusion that it can't be that way since it happens pretty much everywhere, from NY tp Pensylvania. It's not terrorism, it's a "nature strikes back" scenario, the plants and trees produce the suicide-toxin because humanity keeps ing with the planet. This is also the explanation for an unbelivable ridicoulus "running away from the wind" scene. Kinda like that "running away from the ice" in Day after tomorrow, just worse.
In the end, the toxin just disolves and everything get's back to normal. 3 months later nobody can explain why it only happened at the east coast. In the last scene, somewhere in France, people start killing themselves.

I got a copy of Lady in the Water via Black Buster a while back. It wastn't very good. It trys to be a fary tale and that got me interested in it, but between the so so acting (possibly forced by the director) and the forced feeling to the plot development, I ended up not likeing it much. The "twist" is just a switch up of which people are suposed to be special in the fary tale. Not much to look forward to.

I'm actually wondering if Hulk: Take 2 is worth it either, though if nothing else there are big monsters wrecking stuff in that one. I didn't read your spoiler but maybe some of that happens in What Go On? as well ...
Sixth Sense - Liked it.
Unbreakable - Liked it.
Signs - Liked it.
The Village - Liked it.
Lady in the Water - Liked it.
I didn't like them a great bunch, but I enjoyed myself
enough. I'd say on average I give Night a B for concept
and C for execution.

I'd like to see him take a huge step back and do one, not two or 3 of the above so he can work out what he's best at and do it rather than taking on everything and ultimately making his movie +1 lame.
BTW sucked in France. HAHA!

Even before they started talking I knew where they were by the buildings.
But I've been there.
I love how people kept walking backwards.
Trying to outrun the wind = lame.
Fat chick trying to outrun the wind = comedy gold.
i do wish the death scenes were either all comedy ar all tragic, mixing the 2 made it hard to work out what he was trying to achieve.

Appearantly, you guys still got lucky. The german version had all the gore parts cut out. No feeding, no lawnmower, not even the freaggin' hai needel kill was in it.

True. Though in this case I'd say B- and C- respectively.
Waaagh_Gonads wrote:The death parts were the best parts of the movie.
Which says alot for the rest of the movie
As the deaths were fairly uninteresting and a bit pointless? The needle kill and the construction workers impacting with concrete resonated with me, and the repeated gunshot suicides constrained off camera were also well done IMO. The other R-rated stuff was mostly CG that left the audience awkwardly laughing or going "Oookaaay."
I have a LOT to say about the movie and have talked about it at length at my fiancee, but I'll sum up my thoughts as succinctly as I can:
Neat concept but marred by poor acting, lethargic pacing and inconsistent tone.
Not really worth the $6.50 I paid, but after seeing Diary of the Dead it's really hard to say The Happening was a really that bad :S
Shayamalan often frustrates me. I LOVE his ideas. The basic “take a lowbrow genre and make it grownup and dramatic” concept is one I really dig on. I loved Iron Man (which is a completely straight take on the superhero pic) but I really enjoyed Unbreakable too. With Unbreakable I felt that he could have gone a LITTLE further (the deleted scene with him lifting weights in the gym was a lot of fun), but overall I thought the acting and movie overall were very good.
Sixth Sense: Loved. Wouldn’t change a thing.
Unbreakable: Liked. Would have liked it taken a little further. A little more power shown.
Signs: Liked except for the end. Just kind of hokey and odd.
The Village: Really liked.
Lady in the Water: Liked bits and pieces, but mostly disappointed. The whole thing just seemed a little too self-absorbed and the writing and characters weren’t strong enough to hold my interest.
The Happening: Enjoyed, but again felt it was missing something. The writing and characterization were just not quite there. The scene on the porch with the shotgun, for example, came off as just too staged and unrealistic. Other scenes (the construction workers, the confrontation with the old woman, to some extent the jeep ride in Princeton) were really solid and effective.

I loved unbreakable. It's such a subtle approach to the whole superhero thing, that I'm kinda glad it ended like that. Altough it would of course be pure Awesomesauce if he ever made that trilogy it was originally intended to be.
