Ok, have to ask. I see a wolf, a raptor, maybe two types of bear....but what the heck is that other hero riding?

Been boozing, so quick reply...

Thanks Gits'.

Lo MT, Theo'.
In order, left to right;
Red: Siberian tiger.
Black: Dire Wolf.
Yellow: great steppe eagle.
White: Bear.
Blue: Musk Ox.

More details when I come to them.

Thanks Graven'. I've noticed some useful joint rotations when I first looked at the figures, and a few of them have separate arms that I've not glued on.
A saw will be employed shortly and I'll, of course, fully document what I get up to with each one.
...weapon swaps, head swaps, extra tentacles... we'll have to see...

Ta Meer'. Yeah, Scythe board game. Was kickstarted and so has lots of bits and figures. Good game, but can go long; we've played 2 games so far and they've both gone beyond 3 hours. But we are new and learning, and there is 5 of us...

cormadepanda wrote:you paint the strangest of models.
I do try.

After a little research, they are primed and basecoated.

I'm starting with the mechs and will then finish off with the characters.
I also decided to "base" them all as the pictures I've seen of painted figures on plain coloured bases (my initial plan) just don't look right to me. They'll keep the coloured rims as well as having their colour as the main theme.
I'm aiming for unique bases for each faction; you should be able to see subtle colour differences between them in the below pictures, even at this basecoated stage.

These layers will mostly be covered up as is the fate of basecoats.
Most of the colours will be muted / desaturated to aim for realism, not the Space Marines splendour we're used to.

Going through the various artworks for these I can't find a general consensus on the scale of the mechs; some pictures will show them within woods and about "tank" sized, others will show them towering over trees and able to squash a town with one foot... So to get a scale for the bases I went somewhere in-between and about even for all mechs, and added a tree to one of each 4 mechs. I won't get any more complex with the bases as these are going to be handled as game pieces, and if these trees get knocked off they'll probably stay gone. But for now...

From the top:
The Rusviet (totally not Russians), will end up mainly red, probably with gold and black accents. Bases to look like Siberian permafrost.

The Saxony (totally not Germans) mechs will keep this mainly black look. Bases to look quite snowy.

The Crimean (totally not Crimea) will get a sandy yellow look (because nobody actually paint tanks bright yellow). Bases to be very rich and green.

For the Polania (totally not Poland) mechs I'm going to go for a white-washed look over green armour (hence the basecoat). Need to do some research into how this should look before progressing. bases to be not quite as "green".

And the Nordic (yeah...them) will get a mainly blue theme. Bases to be very snowy.

They'll all get their next coat of paint and a black wash for shading and lining. These need all the help they can get from contrast as they are so small; Not one mech stands more than 30mm tall...base included.

MT: Yeah, they would probably work well for that. Don't know how you'd get hold of them without the game though.

Meanwhile, over on the other desk...

The first stage of modifications has been completed on the Poxies.
Arm and weapon swaps. Mostly using what is there in the models, but with a few additions from my box of bits. More work to be done...

Unaltered on the left of each picture.

As I said, more work to be done.
These changes need to be "blended" in to the models.

And more changes need to be made:
I thought about swapping some heads about, but they are all so similar from one to another; staring eyes, wild smile/ rotting face, and a horn. The work needed to change them all around just wouldn't be worth it.
Their legs are also likely tricky to swap about, but may be able to repose one of each pair...

I'll need to give them some thought as to what to change.

I'll pop in to all your blogs soon, but a bit late to do so now. I have been watching though.

Rather than head swaps how about just some horn swaps?

Thanks MT. Good idea, I've been chopping along those lines, nothing worth showing just yet.

Thanks Graven'. Steal away, that's why I show the process.

and to show something, progress on the mechs:

Some need more work than others to be finished, but they all need some finishing touches.

Mechs are being varnished, so in the mean time... some more Poxies...

Swapped about the horns as MT suggested and then I had a bright idea about fixing all these swapped parts together... I mean, plastic cement does do a good job of making 2 plastic pieces into one, but you can always do more.

I remembered that I had my 3D printing pen and that the tip gets hot enough to melt polystyrene... I could use that to weld the pieces together and the melted, uneven, result would work for Nurgle models.
And while I had it out, I added some extra from the pen itself.

Still more to do.
Some putty work to add some tentacles,
and some changes to some legs... as yet, unplanned.
The posh coat chap, will have some alterations to the coat... make it more of a lab coat, y'know.

Until next time.

Good thinking Added enough variety to keep away the OCD.

How well does the 'resin' from the pen adhere to the plastic?

Yeah, it has a ceramic tip so the plastic doesn't stick to it... much.

Scythe is a fun game. With the painted gamepieces it will look pretty too.
As I said, we've only played it twice and there's a lot to wrap your head around at first. Ja, see mechs below.

Thanks. There's still quite a few things I'd change about it though... as always.

For some of them, if it's not stood next to the "original" then even I'm stuck to see what's changed.
For these massed troops types, it just a matter of changing the profile / silhouette enough. The fine details only show if you look closely, and that doesn't happen on the table (only for the photos on DDakka).

Gitsplitta wrote:That's very cool work. Never heard of such a tool...
Ta.
I showed it off when I first got it and had a play...

It's essentially the business end of a 3D printer, in pen form. They are cheaper as they require you to do all the moving and designing.
You need a steady hand, or not mind wiggly lines (and hence great for Nurgle miniatures).

I also used it on this:

Still available in my Etsy shop

monkeytroll wrote:Good thinking Added enough variety to keep away the OCD.

Thanks, getting there.
This printer/pen can use PLA or ABS plastics, no resin.
I think what I have is ABS (the included packs of filament were not labelled) as it can be smoothed with poly cement.
If you hold the tip to the miniature before extruding, the two will melt together, no problems sticking together.

And like that, the mechs are done.
Fairly basic job as they are tiny scale (note the size of the vision slits and windows).
For scale, note that the bases are 29mm diameter.

I can now start on the character figures. They will be a lot more work individually.

Thanks York'. I hadn't thought about considering him (I'm assuming you're looking at the chap with the 'nid arm) genestealer cult. I just used it as a tentacle-y arm. Good thought though.

I did take photos of the characters primed and ready, but forgot to post them. Not much point now that they are painted...
