They’ve shown the torso and legs for their upcoming Late Romans kit. To be honest, I can’t tell the difference between this and the bodies of Gripping Beast’s Saxon Thegns.

I like how people confidently vote for stuff even though it can be done in 4753947395473902 different ways. Looks like nebulous, ill defined stuff that made everyone think of different stuff made to the top (then will crash in sales when head images will fail to materialize).

Hell, let's look at 'robots' - in terms of 40K alone, it can be necrons, mechanicus, men of iron, cybernetica, admech, knights, titans, eldar constructs, canopteks, necromundan ambulls and co, ork stuff, tau drones and autonomous suits, deamon engines, every single one of these looks different. Which one you voted for? And this doesn't even begin to cover the rest of popculture.

Ditto for aliens, there is like 6 factions in 40K alone grouping multiple species, and none looks like other 5. Twice that if you count AoS. If I were WGA, these would be first entries I'd drop in favour of something more concrete...

Well, that is a downside of the non-historical things in particular. They could turn out a lot different that you imagine, and something you thought you'd be interested in you won't be when you see the end results. I think this is particularly true of modular aliens an modular robots. I could see something like 9 out of 10 people who voted for those not actually being interested in the end result, depending on what they pictured them as.

Unfortunately, I doubt that is true. I think it would have been better if the poll had fewer choices, and they had been better defined. Or both. I couldn’t vote for anything as ill defined as ‘Modular Robots’. If that set gets produced, it is bound to disappoint the majority of people wanting it, who are all imagining something different than what they get…

So anyway what I had in mind when I suggested it (but I wasn't the only one) was the bag of parts Mantic made for their scrapyard robot team for Dreadball

This is from a BOLS review, screencapped because actually sending you to BOLS would violate the Geneva convention

Except, y'know, not in restic.

That's similar to what I would picture, but even if they are roughly human sized, how many possibilities could there be on a single sprue? I imagine a lot of parts, like the single wheeled bottom, would need to be assembled from two halves. The four wheel bottom would take several pieces. Even the bottom half with those grasshopper legs couldn't be a single piece.

That may not have been the order I actually voted, as that was the way I found the entries while cutting & pasting. OTOH, I don't think it matters as each poll had the same entries, just ordered differently.

re: Modular robots. I was not thinking 40k AdMech ripoffs, but more a mix of Maelstrom's Edge human sized humanoid robots with assorted Star Wars droids from the Jawa Landcrawler's hold. So most would be bipedal, but there'd be at least one tracked chassis, one wheeled chassis, and perhaps a four legged droid like the Maelstrom's Edge. Hmmm ... writing it out like this I'm beginning to see problems with the concept. Parts for humanoid droids are not likely to work for non-humanoids and vice versa. The kit would work better if it is one or the other.

New Set Announcement: Thureophoroi!

A new set is coming for our FIRST EMPIRES range: Thureophoroi! But first we need your help. We'd like you to take a look at what we have here so far and make any suggestions. Primarily we believe the thuros (shield) is not the right shape and needs to be more narrow? Let us know your thoughts below!

Thureophoroi are currently available only in metal, so for Alexander of Macedonia & Successor States armies this a boon. However, I don't know enough about their equipment to criticize meaningfully.

It is indeed on them.
But it’s the players of certain games that lose out. That 300 vote kit could have been some important historical period kit for some faction, but the generic “regular space humans” with 50 votes gets in instead.

I mean I guess realistically it’s likley that one of the first place kits from one of the days will win it, maybe an outside 2nd place if people who didn’t get theirs through vote for it instead. I guess we shall never know the numbers.

Do you have any proof of them choosing their entries that way?

It sounds to me like you assumed historical kits were more popular than they actually are.

To be fair, I assumed historical kits would have dominated as well. This is based solely on the types of posts/requests you see most on Wargames Atlantic and WA legion facebook. It’s mostly historical, scifi kits, or historical kits that can be used to make a scifi guard unit.

So… I am surprised that not many historical made it in. Surprised more ww2/ww1 did not either. I am not surprised that so many scifi things made it through. And am only a little surprised that 2 fantasy sets… (im county the mid peasants as fantasy) made it in. I think the numbers probably match overall with how it would have gone if it had been just one big poll… my hope is the ogres do well enough that they might be eligible for one of the Nick starter type campaigns they may do.

I also assumed historicals would do better. Sci fi gamers seem to buy a lot of historicals, where historical players seldom buy Sci fi. It’s just unseemly when a historicals gamer disparages Sci fi kits for not being “important” historical kits.

Honestly surprised that modular robots aren't as popular as I thought they'd be. If done well I can see them going gangbusters. Nobody does anything similar and they're pretty game agnostic. If it's Sci-Fi, there's room for more droids.
That said, if cyberpunk security wins and I can convert them to Arbites relatively easily...I'll get 10 boxes minimum. Always wanted to do a full Arbites army for 40k but never found a good "base" model for a reasonable price.

Here’s the thing,
(I’m fine because a lot of stuff I liked is there).

The whole point was for the top 10 kits by vote.
But this is the top 3 from four hugely varied votes.

So, not many historical made the list. But the 4th, 5th and 6th place ideas from let’s say day 2, could have been higher than everything from day 3 and 4.

Because the polls were randomly mashed ideas together per day, it’s quite a skewed result potentially.

For me, some nice easy choices here. But still..
As you say in a later post, I'm not sure it'd make much of a difference. If a kit came 4th in a certain poll, it seems highly unlikely it wouldn't be beaten by places 1, 2 and 3 in the final poll anyway. For various reasons, their final standings might shift a bit (especially with unlimited votes initially and limited votes now), but still, I doubt a 4th place would otherwise have won.

As for the lack of "historicals", I'm not sure I'm surprised. Most of these final entries have something in common: they're generic. Many people playing sci-fi games may be interested in generic aliens, civilians or robots. Only people interested in a specific faction for a specific period will be interested in most of the historical sets.
Of course, this could backfire. For while generic-sounding sets can have fairly universal appeal, not all of these will be generic in their aesthetics. Are we talking humanoid, classic "guy in a rubber mask" aliens, or weirder things? If the sci-fi civilians were called "Necromunda civilians", I'd still be unclear whether those would be ragged dirty Underhive people or fancier Upperhive folk, and this set could lead to even more varied outcomes than that. In short, people might want civilians for their particular sci-fi setting, but there's a good chance these won't fit half of those. Then again, that would still leave plenty of settings they could be useful for, modified to be useful for, or provide useful bits for. Will be very interesting to see what any of those sets end up looking like.

Heat 3 I voted:
1. Medieval European Peasants/Townspeople.
2. Multi-Species Alien Set.
3. Modular Robots.
I am dissapointed that my suggestion of Werewolves did not make it :(

Just based on them saying they took top three from each and not top ten overall.
So I assume they did do it that way.

Historical I picked as an example as not n my any made it. Same applies for whatever kit of choice may have been 4th any given day.

But yeah as I say overall it was probably never going to win.
But would have been good I guess to see the ten most popular kits overall.
(They have the numbers so at least they know to base possible future options on)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And man I hope for multi species aliens to win.
Don’t care what they look like or what bits they choose. Make it all up or base it on existing aliens.

I just want cool aliens to build and paint.

Historical gamers, in order to remain "faithful to the source material" require very specific miniatures for their games. Its not uncommon to see some of them collect multiple armies for the same faction in the same period, just a few years separated from eachother (i.e. these are my 1939 invasion of Poland Germans, these are my 1941 Operation Barbarossa Germans, these are my 1943 Kursk Germans, these are my 1944 Atlantic Wall Germans, these are my 1945 Defense of Berlin Germans, etc.), often as a result of there having been historical changes in uniform, kit, or organization, etc. Sci-fi gamers, on the other hand, barring a very small number of games that have very specific aesthetics and themes (Warcaster, Infinity, Star Wars Legion), are mostly playing generic games, or games set in "open-ended" settings ala 40k where anything goes (moreso as it relates to Guard/Astra Militarum). When anything goes, you basically make do with what you got and let your imagination run wild in the process - historical kits are great conversion fodder and theres a very large range of options available that can serve as a solid base for customization.

I would guess that, in reality, theres probably more sci-fi gamers in the hobby at this point than there are historical gamers - from what I've seen historical gamers tend to trend older, and a lot of them have been in it for so long they already have expansive collections. Sci-fi/fantasy trends younger and is very much still a growing market, which probably goes hand in hand with there being a growing demand that needs to be filled.

The course is clear. We need to petition governments to stop changing uniforms and gear, to make it easier on future historical gamers.

They said on Facebook that they removed some choices from the final poll because they were already planning to make them. They also said they have 8 historical sets in the works. Then they showed a pic of a chariot that might be Egyptian.
