Hello, my first blog, and I haven't painted anything really in awhile since I quit warhammer 5 some years ago. Aside from the icey theme my army has going, this blog will be just about a standard necron army blog, with my list focusing on immortals/destroyers. I will also be converting the destroyers into "jump pack" necron warriors with big guns a la the 2007 Adepticon Necrons in the dakka gallery. Here is my test model, which I painted in 30 minutes, comments and criticism appreciated (taken with my phone camera)

Nice overall scheme, but the paint looks pretty thick. Also, since the figure is white, you might think about using a darker base to frame it better.

Yeah the paint was pretty thick, partially because I was excited to get my entire army 2 hours ago in the mail. I didn't feel like putting on a billion think dry brushes and coats of skull white, but for the rest of the army I will take the time. Base wise, I know where you are coming from but I really do not want to use dirt or grass for these guys. That's why I added the dead grass and the rocks. I might put the rocks on before I prime them black, then dry brush them grey so they are a bit darker. Any suggestions for basing besides snow?

You could use dark industrial grill material that would be black/grey. it would nicely offset the white

Here is my first heavy destroyer, pre-plasticard and pre-GS bulking out the legs. It is on the big base because 5E rules say you have to use the bases they come with. Some of the other ones will be flying once I find suitable wire/pipe.

You took those with a phone camera? Wow, better than my digital camera!

You might want to try a light gryphone sepia or Delvan mud wash in the cracks and crevices to break up the single color. It will also make the necrons look grittier and less "power washed."

Very original scheme and deffinatly a nice contrast with the blue rod.

In reference to the bases, since you are not using a fine flock, I would consider putting the rocks and what not on the base and then attaching the mini. This will make the miniature look like it's standing on top of the ground instead of sinking into it.

Some updates. I like the base ideas and will probably change them later but I like the snow for now. And as for standing them on top of the snow, as lame as it sounds I don't want to get an advantage/disadvantage for having my models be higher than normal with the true LOS rules. Here are some more warriors and some almost finished heavy destroyers, though the pictures don't do them much justice, my lighting was bad.

Here are some of the mostly finished heavy destroyers. They need a bit more white and some touch ups on the high lighting as well as some touch ups on the jump packs.

The paint looks very thick on those destroyers and I would really reconsider the choice of a snow base. It detracts from the figures as everything blends into everything else. Also, you might think of a softer undercoat, maybe grey primer. The black is really stark against the white.

It's my terrible putty work on the legs I think that you are looking at that makes it look thick. I used 5 thin coats of skull white. Maybe a new white? And I'm still thinking about the bases. The pictures make the colors on the base very dull. The dead grass and gravel looks much better in person.

I am a GS newb and I'm using ~5 year old green stuff (not sure if that matters) but it was very hard to flatten it out without it peeling off the leg. I've read some GS guides and made sure my tools were wet but I still couldn't get it. Now that I look at them I'm going to file out those legs to get them a bit flatter.

5-year old green stuff is much harder to work than new green stuff. Also, I've got to second the suggestions to perhaps use a grey primer, and to re-base, as it is, the contrast between black and white is, in my opinion, way too harsh, and the base just blends right into the mini which isn't too good either.

Have you thought about hiting them with some of the new washes? Mabey thin out some of the black so it doesn't stain the white and just fills in the recesses giving it more of a blended look rather than hard lines. Just a thought.

I like the black lined look. I went over it a bit more so it doesn't look so blotchy, but the camera makes it look way worse. I also filed down some of the not-so-smooth putty work on the destroyer legs. I also redid the bases and they look much better now. I have some newer green stuff so hopefully it will be easier to work with on the future destroyers. I'll probably come back later and touch these guys up some more but for now I need to finish up 1000 pts ASAP!

Ifurita, I'm not sure how familiar you are with painting NMM but do you or anyone else have a suggestion for painting the destroyer gun tubes NMM? I can't get it to look right like the scythes on the gauss rifles.

Looking sharp! The blue rods add a great icy touch to these guys.

Hm. I like the color scheme, but I think the "jumppacks" on the Destroyers look freaky-large for those little spindly legs. I really like the idea...just not sure about the execution.

An update for you all, I changed the black primer layered up with gray and white to a white primer, washed with black wash, highlighted several times with more white. You can see the results on my lord (which I've spent a lot more time on since he is my HQ, but still looks better than the black primer). I also finished my first unit of warriors. Now I just need to paint 10 more warriors, 10 immortals, and my lord for my 1000 pt list.

Was thinking looking at your destoyer converstions that the top of the jump packs are kinda bare of detail. Maybe you could add some other bits to that area to fill out the detail?

Yeah I agree but I can't think of a thing. The putty work was supposed to be temporary and I don't like the way it turned out (old GS :( ) I'd love some input for possible necron lord conversions and something to fit to the top of the jump packs.

Here is the finished lord, although I would have preferred converting him...I couldn't think of anything. If I think of something I will change him.

I'm a fan of the Lord model so I say go with it. I like the paint job too, I think the new basing is really working.

As for stuff for the top of the destroyers...hmmmm. Possibly you could cut some bits off of scarabs or something, but it might not look too good. Sorry, I'm not the world's greatest converter myself!
