So I think I've finally settled on my new army being Tyranids when 5th ed comes out. Picked up the codex today and had a read through. I've always invisioned a tyranid army to be swarms of bugs, so I tried to fit in as much as I could. I also tried to keep the list as simple as possible in terms of buying models so you'll notice that my list fits nicely into 1 battle force, 2x boxes of gaunts, and 2x boxes of warriors =) (I already have the Raveners)

Please, tear this apart

HQ
1) Broodlord (83)
- Flesh Hooks, Extended Carapace
- 8x Genestealers- Extended Carapace (160)

ELITE
1) 3x Tyranid Warriors (93)
- 3x Enhanced Senses, 3x Extended Carapace, 3x Deathspitter, 3x Scything Talons
2) 3x Tyranid Warriors (93)
- 3x Enhanced Senses, 3x Extended Carapace, 3x Deathspitter, 3x Scything Talons

TROOPS
1) 12x Termagaunts (72)
2) 12x Termagaunts (72)
3) 12x Hormagaunts- Adrenal Glands (I) (132)
4) 12x Hormagaunts- Adrenal Glands (I) (132)

HEAVY SUPPORT
1) Carnifex (163)
- Venom Cannon, Barbed Strangler, Enhanced Senses, Reinforced Chitin

I'm thinking that the Elite Warriors could use Leaping so that they can charge the turn that they run.
Maybe upping they're numbers to 4 members.

Wouldn't use Ex Carapace on the Hormagaunts
Might give the Hormagaunts Enhanced Initiative
Would use Ex Carapace on the Genestealers

If the Termagaunts are being run as just bodies I'd make them spine gaunts instead
(unless of coarse they are the BFM gaunts)

Agree fairly. . . except for the leaping thing does not help like that. Leaping does not make one a Beast, nor Fleet.
Grants a 12" charge. . .

Hormies I like at 13. The carapace is worthless. Without +Str from toxin sacs, they can wound. In theory. ^^ But never most vehicles even guaranteed back armor. And +I means you get wounded less in CC.

I also rant a lot about the goodness of 8 point spine gaunts to screen using without number. Otherwise I like termagaunts better than spinies.

also 8x Genestealers = 128

shrug.

Oops, thanks for the catch.

Had to cut out the Raveners =(, but list up there is legal now.

That's a lot of points sunk into the genestealers, do they typically make them back?

And I can't seem to find the points to include more warriors, unless I start cutting my gaunts, which I don't want to do seeing as I'll just have models lying around, I might as well use them.

EDIT: To me, it feels like this list is missing...something. I've got anti-vehicle from the carnifex, but is that enough? I've got assault units from the Genestealers and Warriors, but are they enough? The gaunts are good for swarm, but ultimately are they just fodder?

Hey there

I don't mind the list so far, however I wouldn't have so many warriors.

I would look at dropping maybe a squad, possibly 2. I understand that you want to use them as they come in the battleforce, however I'd look at taking 1-2 zoanthropes for both synapse and short range anti tank. I'd also look at dropping the carapace off the stealers since they'll be getting cover saves from running behind the homries/termies. Although, I do understand why you like carapace, and if you're like me you'll still probably want to take it to avoid the bolter death after your first combat round.

With the extra points make your HQ unit bigger, maybe to 4-5 warriors with the extra points.

I wrote this in a hurry, so I hope it makes sence.

Good luck with your nids

i would put a hive tyrant in the hq slot
warriors are good but are very hard to keep around especially if the enemy is running heavy bolters because they wont get any armour save
my sugestions would be a hive tyrant with wings two pairs of sything talons and warp field
iwould also say put the gauts in groups of 24 to make it easier to keep in synapse
also i would agree that taking zoanthropes is a very good idea
and yes stealers usually make up there points if theycan get in but people usually know to shoot at them

I'd take a Tyrant, stuff an infiltrating Brood Lord with the Genestealers when 5th hits and pack at least two Zoanthropes like the others have said.

Tyrant Guard necessary for Hive Tyrant?
And do the wings come as part of the kit or convert? (looks at balrog wings from lord of the rings days..)

And I suppose that would mean cutting into my warriors (which would actually save me money)..

I would suggest getting the feeder tendrills for the Brood lord.
Its so few points (3) for such a nice ability - in 5th ed rules - and then conveys that nice ability to his retinue

Sadly, the wings does NOT come as part of the kit or convert, which mean you have to make it one i think.

Tyrant Guard is necessary for Tyrant without wings( just like my Tyrant). It gives an extra wounds and protection for Tyrant.

its for his retinue mostly with the new rending and preferred enemy rules. It now gives a re-roll to hit instead of just always hit on a 3+. With the new rending more hits = more rends. So give him tendrils and his retinue acid maw and watch them kill stuff like woah.

Where is your saviour now?
