My
FLGS is starting a Fantasy escalation league at the end of the summer which seems to be a good way to start up a WFB force. So my Orks are on hold (until the new
40k box set comes out) and I used some of the Economic Stimulus money to stimulate my local economy. I got a box of knights, a battalion, a damsel, and some old model I quickly kit-bashed to use as a Standard Bearer (I don't really like Standard on the
GW model, but haven't figured out what to do- also it's on backorder at the store).
So I have:
16 Knights
20 Men at Arms
16 Archers
Pegasus Knight
Damsel
Standard Bearer
I've already primed and based the first box of knights and have been trying to figure out a painting style. I won't post pics since this first stage looked pretty dreadful, even for my low standards.
Since I work and go to school this may be updated a little more slowly than I would like, but I figured keeping a log of my progress would keep me motivated. Here's hoping it works out!
So here are my first steps- Assembly and basing. I haven't really done any conversions at all. The only thing worth noting is my penchant for the Men at Arms' round helmet's. I just liked the look of these better than the bare heads. This was all done while watching Flight of the Conchords first season.
My Orks are snow based, and I didn't want to repeat that with the Brets so I chose a pretty basic scheme, graveyard earth base with various grey and off white highlights and static grass. For my bases I used the cheap and effective cornmeal. It has the texture of sand and it clumps giving it a good variation. Covered with a thin watered down white glue it's pretty solid as well.
I took the idea of using cornmeal from Howard Taylor, the very talented author/artist of Schlock Mercenary who happens to work and game at the store I play at (check out his comic, it's good!

Here's everything half done.
And a close up and eye level view to show the texture.
I prime with Krylon Black Primer, it hasn't given me problems yet, and is priced right.
This week the
FLGS is having an all night painting event on the 3rd. I plan to work on the Men at Arms (and hopefully finish the lot) eat a lot of pizza and have fun. Plus it will give me a great seat for the parade the next day (and, more importantly, near all the food stalls).
Right now I planning on using a lot of earth tones- mostly brown and greens- with red shields with the white castle from the transfer sheet.
