My FLGS is starting a Fantasy escalation league at the end of the summer which seems to be a good way to start up a WFB force. So my Orks are on hold (until the new 40k box set comes out) and I used some of the Economic Stimulus money to stimulate my local economy. I got a box of knights, a battalion, a damsel, and some old model I quickly kit-bashed to use as a Standard Bearer (I don't really like Standard on the GW model, but haven't figured out what to do- also it's on backorder at the store).

So I have:
16 Knights
20 Men at Arms
16 Archers
Pegasus Knight
Damsel
Standard Bearer

I've already primed and based the first box of knights and have been trying to figure out a painting style. I won't post pics since this first stage looked pretty dreadful, even for my low standards.

Since I work and go to school this may be updated a little more slowly than I would like, but I figured keeping a log of my progress would keep me motivated. Here's hoping it works out!

So here are my first steps- Assembly and basing. I haven't really done any conversions at all. The only thing worth noting is my penchant for the Men at Arms' round helmet's. I just liked the look of these better than the bare heads. This was all done while watching Flight of the Conchords first season.

My Orks are snow based, and I didn't want to repeat that with the Brets so I chose a pretty basic scheme, graveyard earth base with various grey and off white highlights and static grass. For my bases I used the cheap and effective cornmeal. It has the texture of sand and it clumps giving it a good variation. Covered with a thin watered down white glue it's pretty solid as well.

I took the idea of using cornmeal from Howard Taylor, the very talented author/artist of Schlock Mercenary who happens to work and game at the store I play at (check out his comic, it's good! http://schlockmercenary.com)

Here's everything half done.

And a close up and eye level view to show the texture.

I prime with Krylon Black Primer, it hasn't given me problems yet, and is priced right.

This week the FLGS is having an all night painting event on the 3rd. I plan to work on the Men at Arms (and hopefully finish the lot) eat a lot of pizza and have fun. Plus it will give me a great seat for the parade the next day (and, more importantly, near all the food stalls).
Right now I planning on using a lot of earth tones- mostly brown and greens- with red shields with the white castle from the transfer sheet.

I finished the first unit of Archers excluding the command group. For table top quality, they weren't all that bad. I then took some armory matte finish to the models. The bottle (though I bought it a month ago) must have been old- the models got "fuzzed." Here are some pictures of my epic fail.

I'd ask for comments and suggestions but you can't really see what I did too well. Anyone have a good brand of matte finish? I really liked Testors Dullcoat, but it isn't cheap. Is there a cheaper reliable alternative?

You can still see some of the detail, but I wish I had done snow bases so the white fuzz would fit.

Here's the entire unit.

Damn that sucks dude. The paint job look really good, too bad the varnish messed everything up. The first unit I ever painted, a chaos marine squad back in second edition 40k, fuzzy coated on the varnish stage. I was not happy!

Have you tried hitting those fuzzy models with a gloss sealer and then another coat of matt?

Occassionally this will solve the problem.

aaaaaa gutted mate! hope all goes well. A short time ago I made a new version of my zombie pirate capt for mordhiem, spent hours painting him with free hand patterns....picked up the wrong can to varnish. He's now got a white sheen like yours. Didn't realise at first, thought the white was light reflecting on the wet varnish. By the time a second or so had passed and i worked it out it was too late :(

I'm coming to get you
