Well, my new VMC set just arrived today so I finally got to sit down and start work on my Varghulf. I pinned and cleaned him a few days ago in anticipation of my new paints ^___^ He's extremely unfinished at the moment, basically just has some basecoat slopped on so I can get an idea of what colors I'll eventually be going for. Spent most of my time tonight working on the wings. They're not finished either, of course.. the groove thingees still need to be hit with a darker color (I'm pondering gray, but I'm not sure yet) and the bones / talons need to be done and the arms need to be attached to the body and greenstuffed (but that won't happen until I've finished painting the wings and his sides). So basically.. uh.. the only thing that is complete is the flesh of the wings.

They're a little shinier than I had hoped.. I think I mixed in the wrong white (a gloss instead of a flat) for my final highlight, so I think I'll go back over that tomorrow and see if I can get rid of the glossiness. Anyway, here he is:

Okay... First off, I LOVE the pink on the wings. Please, share the technique.

Second, I wouldn't worry about the glossiness of the white. A quick shot of matt sealer when you're done will flatten it right out.

The wings were done as such:

White primer.

- Whole wing is painted with a mix of 10 parts VMC silver grey and 1 part VMC red.
- The parts that I wanted to be more red were painted with 5 parts silver grey and 1 part red
- Then I just kept adding a drop of red to the mix until I hit the brightest point of the red (the final mix was 5 parts silver grey, 6 parts red)
- After that, I faded it out by painting with 12 parts silver grey and 1 red in the middle of the wings.
- I just kept fading it by adding 2 drops of silver grey to the mix (got up to 16 parts silver grey to 1 part red)
- Then I did pure silver grey and the final highlight, such as it is, (the stupid shiny bit) is half silver grey and half white.

Also, none of it was particularly "neatly" painted -- I just kind of squiggled the brush around since I didn't want to get any 'hard lines' or rings where the colors were fading.

Thank you all for your comments ^_^ Hopefully I'll have some more pictures to post up tonight.

Looking good so far! What's your plan to proceed? Gogin to work on some other bits to bring the whole model up to the same "level", or continue "winging it"?

Still working on the wings ^_^ Took a break yesterday to see The Dark Knight (omg it was so good) and spent most of today trying different paint colors on the wing bones, but I haven't come up with anything that I like yet. I'm thinking a reddish brown (more red at the tip, fading to a brown down by the skin) but everything is just turning out BLAH.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll actually come up with something worth keeping. I think once I get the wings done, the rest of the model will unveil its uh.. potential to me.. or something like that. Or at least so I hope ^____^

I still don't really like them (the wingbones, I mean), but I'm not liking anything that I'm doing so =/ I guess this will have to suffice. Maybe once I get the fur and skin painted I'll decide that they don't look as bad as I think. Or I'll think of something better to do..

Anyway, guess I'll pink up the rest of the rips in the wings now and move on...

Join the club. All my stuff looks like pure crap until it's finished (at which point it looks like adulterated crap).

Major canditate for the Citadel Washes. Everyone loves them, and I think they'd pop the detail on this model nicely.

Some more work done here, finally.

Here's a shot of the back of the model (fur and talons are not complete and everything is chipping like crazy =/ I'll have to touch up practically everything once I'm finished before I varnish). I'm not sure if I want to do the bony protrusions on the back the same color as the talons (which will be a dirty ivoryish color), or do them the reddish brown of the wing bones.

Here's a close up of the cuts on the back. Pondering adding a bit of blood near the fur, but leaving the cuts relatively bloodless to show that he is regenerating.

A close up of the left eye. No, the teeth aren't painted at all.

Close up of the right eye.

Close up of some skin.. does it need more depth?

And I was just about to come harass you about how lo your p&m blog was sinking on the list, and you come thru for me!

OK, commentary from the peanut gallery:

1. coming along very nicely. The red is growing on me quite well, I really like how you've blended the brown skin into the red wing bones, really brings the two together. Especially with the brown being a warm type with a bit of red in it.

2. I would add some more depth on the skin in the arm/wings, yes. Especially after looking at how well all the detail came out in the face. The arm/wings look a little too subtle IMHO; the detail there could be popped out a little more. But remember that I'm no great shakes painter and the reality of what you are looking at could be very different from what I am seeing. Also, i think that this is one of those things where if you gotta ask, you already know the answer.

3. THose eyes are truly great! That whole face is a winner, I think. Could maybe use a little more highlighting on cheekbones/supra orbital arch (I made that up, it means the bit of bone over the eye, I dunno if this thing really has a "brow"), and the uppermost part of snout? Just look at it and tell me what you think.

Those eyes are badass.

I think that you answer that question by asking it yourself. I would give some more highlights at least to the skin, it could probably use some stronger shadows also.

You could try to work the yellowish colour to from the fur into the skin to give the model some coherency, at the moment it is missing the feeling of a whole. There are too many different colors in it IMO.

its all up to the painters decision as everyones oppinion differs, but being such a great model it could be worth going very indepth with the model, just try it untill your happy with the result.
and its looking great so far, keep up the good work
