Not sure how to better title this.. but.. oh well.
In a Space Marine Codex Chapter, there are 1000 marines.. divided into 10 companies? Right?
1st Company is generally Veterans
2nd company is what
3rd company is Assault, right?
4th company is..
5th
6th etc..
10th is scouts, no?
I am interested in generalities.. I know that the Dark Angels is different, as is Space Wolves..
so, this leads up to me asking..
How does "generally following codex" chapters divide by the number? are they, (for example) 2-6th all tacticals, 7-8 Assault, 9 dev.. etc?
I tried to look this up here on dakka, and elsewhere on the web, and just ain't finding this..
My search-fu is weak..

Isn't it rumoured that the Black Templars have over a 1000 marines in their chapter?
Out of intrest why is it that each chapter is only allowed 1000 marines?

Dispassionate Imperial Judge

Before the Horus Heresy, the Space Marine Legions numbered tens of thousands each. Some of the legions used 'chapters' as an organisational unit of around 1000 marines.
After the Horus Heresy, Guilliman wanted to restrict the power of the individual legions, so that no-one could start such a huge rebellion again, so all the legions were broken down into 1000 man autonomous Chapters. If a Chapter master goes rogue, only 1000 marines turn renegade instead of 10 or 20 thousand.
This is partly why, before the Heresy, there were only 20 different legions, and now you have over 1000 chapters, many of which are 'successor' chapters to one of the original 20.
