The Last Chancer Who Survived

So, I got myself 3 new carnifexes, the new apoc crusher brood box set. I already have 3 others (4 including my carniphant conversion) so I plan to make 2 assault fexes and 1 will be a Trygon conversion. Anyway, what's the best build for assault fexes? Do I want 2 tallons? or 1 tallon 1 crushing claw? I love the look of 2 tallons, but the d6 attacks the claws gives seems real nice. What about other goodies? scythe/mace tail? Tusks? Spine banks? spore cysts?
I will mostly just be using these guys in Apocalypse games too, I don't run a 'zilla army so I usually just have room for 1 fex in normal games
The other fexes I have is 1 elite w/ devourers, 1 real old one w/ tallons & venom cannon, 1 gunfex w/ vc & strangler, and the carniphant conversion I did. So I have more than enough fex shooting, time to add some good big assaulty stuff to the army

Nevermind.. Yakface's article summed it up good enough for me
I'm hoping now that they can run an assault fex will be a much better option than before.

That was written for 4E.
5E is a whole different world, and most of what's in that tactica is off.
For a heavy support fex being geared to CC, try this:
+1 WS, Bio-Plasma, Scythe Tail Weapon, Chitin, Miasma, Tusked, Talons, Crushing Claws: 179.
It has 5 wounds.
On the charge:
It has 1 attack at 4+ to hit.
+D3 if 4+ enemies in base contact.
+ D6 for claws.
1 for scything talons.
2 for charge.
Max possible: 13 attacks.
You can always spend more points to make it more super, but I don't bother.
For a elite fex, try this:
+2 Scything Talons, Toxic Miasma, +1 WS.
It has 5 attacks on the charge.
Both hit most enemies on 3+, most characters hit it on 4+. Makes them more survivable.
It's about 800 points for 6 of these (3 of each).
Toss in 255 points for Tyrant super units (2 of each) and you can still bring some cheap troops along.
In my view, if you don't bring the Tyrant super units...you will lose the Fexes. If you do bring them, people will have a hell of a time stopping you.
Don't forget the Tyrant Super units give the Fexes cover saves...

cool sounds like a plan. I may throw in the bonded exoskeleton too.. it's pricey but it's saved my gunfex from plasmagun smartarses before. and since I'll be using these guys in mostly just apoc games anyway the extra pts won't be a big deal. But these models will just be heavy fexes, I use the old original fexes for elites since they're smaller

The Elite build I like is 2x Scytals, +1 WS and Mace Tail.
Stelek's build is very similar, but it's more defensive than offensive. I feel like Carnifexes are already tougher than they are killy, and their major weakness is in number of attacks.

I've been looking over a the Tactica Carnifex, and a lot of things are starting to look "up" for him.
First off, obvi, is run, so a CC fex does get into combat more now.
Since everyone counterattacks you are virtually garunteed to get your 4+ models for the tail weapons, so that is great.
The new blast weapon rules mean that death spitters are viable, sort of. I mean, two twin linked DS means that you are almost certainly going to hit with one (re-rolling scatter dice), and then the other, as has been mentioned, is quite likely to end up in the same unit.
The change to the way casualty removal works, combined with countercharge means that bio-plasma is viable, since there will be enough models to soak up that extra attack, and keep the assault going through the other phases.
The one less attack for powerfists, is good too.
So yeah, anyone else want to add there thoughts? Perhaps we can help ol' yak rework his article?

when I build these 2 fexes I'm going to magnetize them, so that I can change around their weapons based on the game. But still I think for the majority of games I'm going to run them as CC fexes since all my others are shooty. I was also going to order the big beefy forge world arms, but then I read that they're only for cityfight games and so far to this day I've still never played a cityfight game :( I'd love to, just never had the chance :(

you can always just add lots of buildings and ruins.. and play cityfight at apoc scale ! (=
about FW arms... use them just as alternative looking crushing claws\or talons - what they remind more...

if points cost isnt a concearn, go with claws, talons, scythe tail, and pretty much every biomorph lol, i have a fex way over 300 points i use, but thanks to 2+ save, high toughness, regenerate and more goodies it rarely dies in a game.
i know you said assult, but its just fun to have a fex with 2 pairs of devourers and spine banks, 10 shots, then charge in with mace tail (total of 3-5 CC attacks)
against light armour it should do well, killing most with shooting then finishing off survivors.

Ok, I ran the numbers and I think you're right. There are a few cases where the Club Tail would be good, but the great majority work as you've said.

Dont tail weapon not work on the charge because you have to START the assault phase in btb with 4 or more models?

well thats after you charge them, which would be after the start of the phase. Dont get me wrong I'm all for them working on the charge as a Nid player but it just seems contrary to how its written. The start of the assault phase is at the very beginning, once you start charging and defenders start reacting its no longer the start of the phase.

yep. in dex:Nids its stated.. that scythe-tail work if model have 5+ opponents in bsb at the start of the assault phase. So by RAW scythe can't work on the charge 100%, and in future turns, there probably will be less then 5 models (= after initial charge.

I was excited about the new utility of tail weapons, until I read the actual text.
I do not think they can ever work on the charge. Silly perhaps, but RAW, as I read it.

That's the correct way to read it: the models have to start the assault phase in base to base, if they had to move into base to base during the assault phase, and models starting in base to base contact don't move, then it follows that they didn't start in base to base.
Still, a handy pair of doo-hickeys for a Carnifex to dismantle infantry hordes (read: Orks).

My Carni loadout is 2x SCything Talons, and Implant attack.
It comes out to 110 points. Its a cheap fex and nothing to sneeze at either. The implant attack makes it a hunter of stuff that would normally have eternal warrior and making sure they go down fast.
